Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last half of the 20th century cobalt-60 units were the mainstay of radiation treatments for cancer. This book describes the development of the first cobalt -60 unit in the United States and the man behind it, Leonard Grimmett. Conceptually conceived before World War II it only became possible because of the development of nuclear reactors during the war. The initial idea was to replace the radium in the contemporary units of the time with cobalt-60, but with the realization that the reactors could produce much more cobalt-60 than originally thought the design of the cobalt-60 unit was drastically changed to take advantage that the application of the inverse square law to cancer radiation treatments would make. Although Grimmett conceived of and published his ideas first, the Canadians built the first units because of the capability of their reactor to produce more suitable cobalt-60 sources. The story tells how Grimmett and the other people involved came together at the time that the U S Atomic Energy Agency was pushing the use of radioactivity in medicine. But Grimmett died suddenly before his unit could be built and very little information about him was known until recently when various documents have come to light, allowing the full story to be told.

Book Synopsis Sparse Arrays for Radar, Sonar, and Communications by : Moeness G. Amin
Download or read book Sparse Arrays for Radar, Sonar, and Communications written by Moeness G. Amin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-01-04 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialized resource providing detailed coverage of recent advances in theory and applications of sparse arrays Sparse Arrays for Radar, Sonar, and Communications discusses various design approaches of sparse arrays, including those seeking to increase the corresponding one-dimensional and two-dimensional virtual array apertures, as well as others that configure the arrays based on solutions of constrained minimization problems. The latter includes statistical bounds and signal-to-interference and noise ratio; in this respect, the book utilizes the recent strides made in convex optimizations and machine learning for sparse array configurability in both fixed and dynamic environments. Similar ideas are presented for sparse array-waveform design. The book also discusses the role of sparse arrays in improving target detection and resolution in radar, improving channel capacity in massive MIMO, and improving underwater target localization in sonar. It covers different sparse array topologies, and provides various approaches that deliver the optimum and semi-optimum sparse array transceivers. . Edited by a world-leading expert in Radar and Signal Processing and contributed to by world-class researchers in their respective fields, Sparse Arrays for Radar, Sonar, and Communications covers topics including: Utilizing sparse arrays in emerging technologies and showing their offerings in various sensing and communications applications Applying sparse arrays to different environments and obtain superior performances over conventional uniform arrays Solving the localization, beamforming, and direction-finding problems using non-uniform array structures for narrowband and wideband signals Designing sparse array structures for both stationary and moving platforms that produce physical and synthesized array apertures. Using deep neural networks that learn the underlying complex nonlinear model and output the sparse array configuration using representations of the input data spatio-temporal observations Solving for optimum sparse array configurations and beamforming coefficients in sensing using iterative convex optimization methods Providing complete coverage of the recent considerable progress in sparse array design and configurations, Sparse Arrays for Radar, Sonar, and Communications is an essential resource on the subject for graduate students and engineers pursuing research and applications in the broad areas of active/passive sensing and communications.

Book Synopsis Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) in Medicine by : K.S. Chuang
Download or read book Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) in Medicine written by K.S. Chuang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) in Medicine" held in Evian, France, October 14- 26, 1990. The program committee of the institute consisted of H.K. Huang (Director), Osman Ratib, Albert Bakker, and Gerd Witte. This institute brought together approximately 90 participants from 15 countries. These proceedings are the accumulation of eight years of research and development results in PACS by various dedicated groups throughout the world. The purpose of this institute was to review the most recent technology available for PACS and some clinical results. The readers should notice the remarkable advances in this field by comparing the contents in these proceedings with those in a previous institute on "Pictorial Information Systems in Medicine" held August 27 - September 7, 1984 in Braunlage/Harz, Federal Republic of Germany, and published as Vol. 19 in this series. The institute was organized according to four categories: PACS components and system integration, PACS and related research in various countries and manufacturing companies, clinical experience and research support, and participants' scientific communications. In PACS components, we included image acquisition, workstations, data storage and networking. In system integration, topics on interfaces between Hospital Information System (HIS), Radiology Information System (RIS) and PACS, clinical reports, the ACR/NEMA standard, databases, reliability, and system integration were discussed. This lecture series emphasized the technical detail and "how to" aspects.
