Usually, this means that either the maternally inherited or the paternally inherited allele of a gene is expressed while the opposite allele is repressed. The phenomenon is largely restricted to mammals and flowering plants and was first recognized at the level of whole genomes. Nuclear transplantation experiments carried out in mice in the late 1970s established the non-equivalence of the maternal and paternal genomes in mammals, and a similar conclusion was drawn from studies of interploidy crosses of flowering plants that extend back to at least the 1930s. Further mouse genetic studies, involving animals carrying balanced translocations (reviewed in Chapter 3), indicated that imprinted genes were likely to be widely scattered and would form a minority within the mammalian genome. The first imprinted genes were identified in the early 1990s; over forty are now known in mammals and the list continues steadily to expand.

Book excerpt: The idea of this symposium grew out of our discussions on the need to review the advances that had been made in the theoretical description of inelastic scattering reactions in the last few years. Since a microscopic description of inelastic scattering uses realistic effective interactions, we felt that it was appropriate to begin such a summary with a discussion of the free two-nucleon force. However as we thought further about this review, it became increasingly apparent that a rather more ambitious program linking the free two-nucleon force and nuclear matter calculations both to shell model calculations and to reaction theory, would be appropriate and perhaps even necessary to do full justice to the subject. We hope that the symposium as it emerged did fulfill these aims, better perhaps than we expected. There are some comments required concerning the presentation of the material. First the papers are grouped by session number for convenient gathering of the same topic in the same place. Secondly, because of the rather tight constraint on pages, it was possible to print only those contributions which were presented orally at the symposium. The remainner are included as abstracts. The full text of all the contributed papers is available as a Michigan State University Cyclotron Laboratory Report (MSUCL 39/1971).

In the intervening years each of these important areas of lattice dynamics has undergone significant developments. This volume is therefore concerned with reviewing the current status of these areas.Chapter one deals with the path-integral quantum Monte-Carlo method as a numerical simulation approach and looks at how this has been applied successfully to the determination of low temperature thermodynamic properties of anharmonic crystals and to certain dynamical properties as well. Chapter two is concerned with the calculation of static and dynamic properties of anharmonic crystals in the quantum regime. Chapter three discusses intrinsic anharmonic localized modes that have been intensively studied recently. Two topics, ab initio calculations of phonons in metals, and surface phonons are dealt with in the next chapter. The remaining two chapters are devoted to topics that have not been treated in previous volumes. One is phonon transport and the second is phonons in disordered crystals.The work described in the six chapters of this volume testifies to the continuing vitality of the field of dynamical properties of solids nearly a century after its founding.

Book excerpt: The many-body-theoretical basis and applications of theoretical spectroscopy of condensed matter, e.g. crystals, nanosystems, and molecules are unified in one advanced text for readers from graduate students to active researchers in the field. The theory is developed from first principles including fully the electron-electron interaction and spin interactions. It is based on the many-body perturbation theory, a quantum-field-theoretical description, and Green's functions. The important expressions for ground states as well as electronic single-particle and pair excitations are explained. Based on single-particle and two-particle Green's functions, the Dyson and Bethe-Salpeter equations are derived. They are applied to calculate spectral and response functions. Important spectra are those which can be measured using photoemission/inverse photoemission, optical spectroscopy, and electron energy loss/inelastic X-ray spectroscopy. Important approximations are derived and discussed in the light of selected computational and experimental results. Some numerical implementations available in well-known computer codes are critically discussed. The book is divided into four parts: (i) In the first part the many-electron systems are described in the framework of the quantum-field theory. The electron spin and the spin-orbit interaction are taken into account. Sum rules are derived. (ii) The second part is mainly related to the ground state of electronic systems. The total energy is treated within the density functional theory. The most important approximations for exchange and correlation are delighted. (iii) The third part is essentially devoted to the description of charged electronic excitations such as electrons and holes. Central approximations as Hedin's GW and the T-matrix approximation are discussed.(iv) The fourth part is focused on response functions measured in optical and loss spectroscopies and neutral pair or collective excitations.
