To - day a trip through Western Canada brings hundreds of them into view, every one of them making money for the owners. No machine introduced to the Canadian farmer has ever met the instant popularity which has come to the gasoline tractor. This popularity is rightly deserved. For no one machine has done more to make possible the great wheat crops which have given Western Canada the name, The Breadbasket of the World. Book excerpt: International vaudeville star and Broadway prima ballerina Jeanne Devereaux performed for millions across America and Europe from age eleven until her retirement at forty. A headliner at Radio City Music Hall, she led a large group of performers on one of the first USO Camp Shows tours to Japan. Born Jean Helman, she entered showbiz as a dancing trouper performing in palatial theaters and was one of the last vaudevillians surviving into the 2010s. In her later years living in Pasadena, California, Devereaux indulged her passion for research and writing in the Huntington Library's Rothenberg Reading Room, losing none of her intelligence and wit despite a fading memory. Drawing on personal interviews, theatrical programs, and her diary and letters, this biography illuminates the life and career of one of vaudeville's stars of stage, film, and television.

Book Synopsis The Queen Mother and Her Century by : Arthur Bousfield
Download or read book The Queen Mother and Her Century written by Arthur Bousfield and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2000-07 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To honour the Queen Mother and mark the occasion of her 100th birthday, Dundurn Press is publishing a biography of this remarkable woman in words and pictures. Since her marriage to George VI, the Queen Mother has been a public figure who has always evoked passionate reactions: whether it was the anonymous soldier who vowed "to fight for that little lady," Adolf Hitler who described her as "the most dangerous woman in Europe," or the Canadian journalist who coined the expression "the Queen Mum." A Canadian perspective on a sovereign who created and cultivated a special relationship with Canada informs The Queen Mother and Her Century. The first of many tours of Canada, the Royal Tour of 1939, which gave Canadians our initial opportunity to experience the Queen Motherâe(tm)s personal magnetism first-hand, is described in detail, along with the many Canadian relationships the Queen Mother has formed since. The Queen Mother and Her Century is a wonderful album-sized (81/2âe x 11âe ) commemorative keepsake and makes a thoughtful gift for the many admirers of the Queen Mother. The text and 120 colour photographs are complemented by time bars, lists of the Queen Motherâe(tm)s official tours, associations the Queen Mother is patron of, places that are named after the Queen Mother, and the Royal Family tree.

Download or read book Hats written by Clair Hughes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a hat may be designed for the purpose of practicality or aesthetics, it is part of a complex interplay of wider cultural meanings. Throughout history hats have played a significant role in expressing and revealing notions of class, gender, authority, fashion and etiquette. By examining the consumption and production of hats from the 18th century to the present day, this book explores their significance as markers of social and cultural change. Taking a thematic approach, Clair Hughes charts how headgear during the modern era has been shaped by status, gender and necessity. Using case studies such as the bowler hat, which has moved up and down classes and professions, Hughes reveals that although a hat might seem bound to its status and context, it is as susceptible to subversion and reinvention as the society which creates it. From the transition of pilots' helmets from practical headgear to fashion items, to the Slouch hat and the baseball cap, hats have responded to cultural or political movements, often becoming conscious displays of identity and social allegiance. Drawing from material and historical research as well as depictions in art, literature and film, Hughes provides a fascinating insight into hats as a visible performance of social values and culture.
