Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Equal Burden is the first scholarly study of the Army Medical Services in the First World War to focus on the roles and experiences of the men of the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). Though they were not professional medical caregivers, they were called upon to provide urgent medical care and, as non-combatants, were forbidden from carrying weapons. Their role in the war effort was quite unique and warranting of further study. Structured both chronologically and thematically, An Equal Burden examines the work that RAMC rankers undertook and its importance to the running of the chain of medical evacuation. It additionally explores the gendered status of these men within the medical, military, and cultural hierarchies of a society engaged in total war. Through close readings of official documents, personal papers, and cultural representations, Meyer argues that the ranks of the RAMC formed a space in which non-commissioned servicemen, through their many roles, defined and redefined medical caregiving as men's work in wartime.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Royal Army Medical Corps Training, 1911 It will readily be understood that the amount of sickness among soldiers will, and does, vary from year to year, but the prevalence of disease is chiefly influenced by such conditions as age and length of service, place where serving, and whether the conditions be those of peace or war. It is desirable that every one should have some idea of the main facts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1914 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER X War's Effects A Gunner of the Field Artillery, who was wounded at Mons, gives an idea of the way in which men were tended even in the hurry and confusion of the first days of war. Wounded by shell-fire, this man crawled for over a quarter of a mile under fire, and was then picked up by an ambulance wagon, where he stayed for two days. His next stage was a motor lorry, in which he remained for four days, and thence he was transferred to a field hospital, where for a time it was thought that he would not recover. In the end, however, he was able to be transported home, and made satisfactory recovery, though he will not go back to France to fight again. He counts among the permanent effects of war, though of actual fighting he saw but very little. p 169 One of the worst effects, when positions have to be held, is the number of bodies of horses that cannot be buried at once. Along the position of the Aisne the bodies of whole teams of horses lay piled up, struck down by shell-fire and left to rot. The British troops did their best in cases of this kind, but it was impossible to bury all the carcases, and thus the work of the sanitary section of the R. A. M. C. was rendered doubly hard, for in those decomposing carcases was danger of infection to the troops for miles round. A curious point in the earlier engagements was that nearly all the wounded who returned had been hit in the legs or feet. This was accounted for by the fact that, on the retreat, there was no chance for digging trenches, as was done later in positions that were held for some time, and the dropping shell-fire from the German guns fell behind such cover as the men selected for their positions on to their legs and feet. It is an old rule with regard to "taking...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An indispensable guide to the British Army during the First World War covers the men who fought for Britain: from the 'Old Contemptibles' – the professionals who stemmed the German advance at the beginning of the war – to the Territorials, the 'Derby Men', Kitchener's 'New Army' and the conscripts who eventually defeated the Kaiser's armies four years later. Andrew Rawson examines the impressive contributions made by the Dominions and the Empire and explores aspects of doctrine, training, communications, strategy and tactics, together with divisional organisations, histories and the roles of the different Arms and Services. He reviews all aspects of the soldier's everyday life – uniforms, equipment, rations, trench life, leave and military discipline – and profiles the commanders and the legacy of the war in art, as well as providing information on cemeteries and places of interest. It is all here, in one book.
