Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Engineering - Computer Engineering, grade: 3.71, Cyprus International University, language: English, abstract: In this thesis, three Wireless Sensor Networks – Ad-hoc On-Demand Distance Vector, Dynamic Source routing protocol and Optimized Link State routing protocol have been simulated and compared in typical IoT scenarios. Their performance was evaluated using three performance metrics and then they were compared; the performance metrics are Routing Overhead, Average End to End Delay and Throughput. Different number of nodes with different percentages of mobile nodes were analyzed. Specifically, number of nodes analyzed were 20, 40, 60 and 70 with the number of mobile nodes 10, 15 and 20 using OPNET while with NS 3 20, 60 and 100 nodes were analyzed. For each of the number of nodes, all the number of mobile nodes were evaluated. The routing protocols were analyzed using the OPNET Simulation Software and NS-3and the environment size for the simulation was 1000m by 1000m. IoT has continue to grow bigger since from its inception. Many mobile devices are now available, the internet and its application have only grown bigger and better. As IoT is continually growing, so also is the complexity, as a result issues pertaining routing have also increased. Many researches have been made in attempt to proffer solutions that will either minimize or eliminate these routing issues. Different routing protocols have been designed with different specifications for different applications of the IoT. Also, attempts have been made to implement routing protocols of other types of networks in the IoT.

Book excerpt: We evaluate several routing protocols, and show that the use of bandwidth and delay estimation can provide throughput and delay guarantees in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). This thesis describes modifications to the Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) protocol to implement the Quality Aware Source Routing (QASR) network routing protocol operating on an 802.11e link layer. QASR network nodes exchange node location and flow reservation data periodically to provide information necessary to model and estimate both the available bandwidth and the end-to-end delay of available routes during route discovery. Bandwidth reservation is used to provide end-to-end Quality of Service, while also utilizing the differentiated Quality of Service provided by the 802.11e link layer. We show that QASR performs significantly better in several performance metrics over the DSR and the Ad-Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) protocols, and performs more consistently in all quality metrics when traffic demand exceeds network capacity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a simulation and performance evaluation analysis of the various routing protocols that have been proposed for the Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) environment using the Network Simulator-2 (NS-2) tool. Many routing protocols have been proposed by the academic communities for possible practical implementation of a MANET in military, governmental and commercial environments. Four (4) such routing protocols were chosen for analysis and evaluation: Ad Hoc On-demand Distance Vector routing (AODV), Dynamic Source Routing (DSR), Destination-Sequenced Distance Vector routing (DSDV) and Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR). NS-2 is developed and maintained by the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute (ISI). Leveraging on NS-2 s simulation capabilities, the key performance indicators of the routing protocols were analyzed such as data network throughput, routing overhead generation, data delivery delay as well as energy efficiency or optimization. The last metric is explored, especially due to its relevance to the mobile environment. Energy is a scare commodity in a mobile ad hoc environment. Any routing software that attempts to minimize energy usage will prolong the livelihood of the devices used in the battlefield. Three important mobility models are considered, namely, Random Waypoint, Manhattan Grid, and Reference Point Group Mobility. The application of these three models will enhance the realism of simulation to actual real life mobility in an urban or military setup scenario. The performance of the routing protocols in varied node density, mobility speed as well as loading conditions have been studied. The results of the simulation will provide invaluable insights to the performance of the selected routing protocols. This can serve as a deciding factor for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) in their selection of the most suitable routing protocols tailored to their specific needs.

Book excerpt: Due to unpredictable network topology changes, routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) is an important and challenging research area. The routing protocol should detect and maintain a good route(s) between source and destination nodes in these dynamic networks. Many routing protocols have been proposed for mobile ad hoc networks, and none can be considered as the best under all conditions. This thesis presents the design and implementation of a new proactive multipath MANET routing protocol. The protocol, named Multipath Destination Sequenced Distance Vector (MDSDV), is based on the well known single path Destination Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV). We show that the protocol finds node-disjoint paths, i.e., paths which do not have any nodes in common, except for the source and the destination. The thesis presents a systematic evaluation of MDSDV in comparison with three well known protocols: one proactive (DSDV), and two reactive (AODV) and (DSR). MDSDV behaves very well in terms of its packet delivery fraction and data dropped in both static and dynamic networks. It delivers nearly 100% of data in dense networks (networks with more than 20 nodes). The speed of the nodes and the number of sources have a low impact on its performance.

Book excerpt: [ANGLÈS] In recent years, the number of mobile and portable devices which are capable to have wireless communications has increased, these mobile nodes connected by wireless link may form a self-configured network to constitute a Mobile Ad-Hoc Network (MANET). Wireless technology has led to development of new communication technology and multimedia services. Due to the continued growth of the mobile users, the demand of multimedia services such as video streaming has increased. Nodes can act as a host or router to forward data from one node to another node in a network which is not reachable by one hop. As they can move freely through the network, it is common to have link breakage, so alternative path should be provided quickly. Furthermore, more stable and reliable paths must be available instead of one path. There are many type of video coding technique for MANET, which one of the best technique used is MPEG-2 VBR that it has a capability of using a proper multipath routing in order to improve distribution of video streams over the paths. Thus for receiving to the best performance using a technique called g-MMDSR (game theoretic- Multipath Multimedia Dynamic Source Routing) in order to select the paths dynamically for sending video by using the game theory approach. The g-MMDSR is an extension of a-MMDSR (adaptive Multimedia Multipath Dynamic Source Routing) technique that includes a game theoretic algorithm in the multipath routing scheme in order to share resources among competing nodes. Our scheme is used to improve the performance of the framework and experience of the end user by sending the most important video frames from one of the two best available paths according to certain probability. In this way we need to examine P value as a fixed and variable to reach the best outcomes, where the number of mobility of the nodes and interfering traffic is too much. This method has designed for MANET network but it capable to use it over the VANET network as well. The result of simulation have demonstrated the benefit of using the game theory technique in different situation over none game theory and also the benefit of variable P value over fixed P value in game theory.
