Book excerpt: Plan Your Trip Trip planning can save money in many waysA professional driver knows the importance of road trip planning. A well planned trip is profitable. It also raises a trucker's comfort level and eases the stress level of the day.Knowing where you're going to stop for meal breaks, fuel and rest, is absolutely imperative. There are all sorts of unexpected events that could occur on the road, but having a plan can make you more prepared. The better you have your trip planned out (driving hours, routes, weather scouting, etc.), the safer your journey will be. ***** CONSEQUENCES OF NO PLANS FOR A TRIP ***** Running out of fuel Over fueling before scaling, can cause an overweight issue, adversely affect the driver's schedule No convenient restaurant or truck stop for meals No proper rest area or truck stop parking for the night Not knowing where repair shops are located, or other essential services Potential danger...could end up in unknown, unsafe areas. Could cost the driver money if he takes the wrong route (extra miles) Driving time (hours of service) wasted and money wasted (extra fuel) and potentially late for a delivery Poor planning can damage your driving record. It's not worth the risk.

Book excerpt: Most laws, ordinances, and rules concerning truck routes are established for through trucks, but that trucks with local origins or destinations may use other roads and streets to travel to and from the established truck routes. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Research Report 943: Design and Access Management Guidelines for Truck Routes: Planning and Design Guide helps transportation agencies establish appropriate methods of choosing truck routes to ensure that the selected roads and streets are suitable for truck travel but do not decrease efficiency by taking trucks too far out of their way or increase crash risk by increasing travel distance (and, therefore, vehicle-miles of travel) too much.

In the consumer products industry, DSD is one of the strategic key growth areas, as the process delivers a broad range of business benefits to all parties of the value chain. Today, 24 of the world’s Top 30 Fast Moving Consumer Goods companies employ the DSD business process. Although DSD is gaining major and steadily increasing attention in the market, it has hardly been covered by literature and empirical studies. For the first time and including the input of both practitioners and academics, this book throws light on the topic of DSD from different perspectives, providing fresh insights and benefits. The book covers diverse topics. Among others, it delivers a deeper understanding of the DSD business process and why companies use it. Furthermore, the global status quo of DSD usage and details of its implementation will be illustrated and multi-level insights (strategic, operational) will be discussed.

Book excerpt: Discover the latest research in path planning and robust path tracking control In Autonomous Road Vehicle Path Planning and Tracking Control, a team of distinguished researchers delivers a practical and insightful exploration of how to design robust path tracking control. The authors include easy to understand concepts that are immediately applicable to the work of practicing control engineers and graduate students working in autonomous driving applications. Controller parameters are presented graphically, and regions of guaranteed performance are simple to visualize and understand. The book discusses the limits of performance, as well as hardware-in-the-loop simulation and experimental results that are implementable in real-time. Concepts of collision and avoidance are explained within the same framework and a strong focus on the robustness of the introduced tracking controllers is maintained throughout. In addition to a continuous treatment of complex planning and control in one relevant application, the Autonomous Road Vehicle Path Planning and Tracking Control includes: A thorough introduction to path planning and robust path tracking control for autonomous road vehicles, as well as a literature review with key papers and recent developments in the area Comprehensive explorations of vehicle, path, and path tracking models, model-in-the-loop simulation models, and hardware-in-the-loop models Practical discussions of path generation and path modeling available in current literature In-depth examinations of collision free path planning and collision avoidance Perfect for advanced undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in autonomous vehicles, Autonomous Road Vehicle Path Planning and Tracking Control is also an indispensable reference for practicing engineers working in autonomous driving technologies and the mobility groups and sections of automotive OEMs.

Book excerpt: A two level hierarchical route planner has been developed. The data input to the system is a cross-country mobility map. For a given vehicle type, this map specifies regions which are GO or No-GO. A line-thinning algorithm is used to generate a skeleton of the GO areas. This skeleton is then converted into a graph-theoretic structure. A first-level route planner using elevation-grid data is used to compute the traversal time of each arc of the graph. These traversal times become the weights used by the second level route planner. This route planner is an A* algorithm that is used to search for a specified number of non-competing routes, i.e., routes that have no arc-segments in common. Thus, the first level route planner does detailed planning over a small area but is subject to combinatorial explosion when a search over a wider area is required. The second level graph-search algorithm provides the capability to efficiently plan a route over a larger area but without detail about the precise path followed. This system was implemented in Common Lisp on a Lisp machine. The software has also been integrated into a workstation that was developed to provide support to Army robotic vehicle research. The workstation provides support for comparing the capabilities of alternative route finding algorithms. Keywords: Mobility; Automated terrain reasoning; Route planning; Autonomous vehicles.

Due to the dynamic nature of the real world, PP needs to address changing environments and how autonomous vehicles respond to them. This book explores PP in the context of road vehicles, robots, off-road scenarios, multi-robot motion, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs ).
