Book excerpt: FOR A MAN LIKE RICKY BAXTER, FORGIVENESS DOESN'T COME EASILY. Ostensibly just this disabled guy running a simple charity in a London backwater, anyone underestimating Ricky quickly discovers their mistake. He's a man driven to right some of the wrongs of the world - a man who simply doesn't care who gets hurt along the way.Or so he likes to believe. Because when an abused pole dancer comes to him for help, he has little idea of the murky depths of modern-day slavery that he's about to get dragged into. Too late, he finds himself up against violent gangs smuggling migrants across Europe, people who'd go to any extremes to exploit their human cargo for profit. People who make Ricky question himself. Has he really got what it takes to stop these people? Or will he find himself losing the moral high ground, drawn into acting more like the gang leaders themselves and, in the process, sinking to their level? What starts out as a simple matter quickly escalates into a life-or-death struggle against everything he holds dear. The trouble is, as Ricky is about to discover, nothing in life ever goes according to plan ...
Download or read book Rough Justice written by Roger Williams and published by Waterside Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rough Justice recounts the experiences of victims of police and criminal justice failings through the stories of some who fought back, often with amazing commitment and courage. Their feelings encompass frustration, confusion, helplessness and anger. Their encounters affected their trust, certainty and confidence in British justice, sometimes for a lifetime. "An extraordinary book to remind us all that our 'social contract' comes with some frightening downsides" Professor David Wilson (From the Foreword). In 2006 Prime Minister David Cameron declared the police the 'last great unreformed public service' but Governments have dodged fundamental change. Police still investigate and often 'clear' themselves, and avoid prosecution more than Joe Public. A minority practice deception and dubious tactics to obscure what is happening. At a time when the Home Office is reviewing police integrity and discipline, the book also looks at the manipulation of crime statistics, argues that the Independent Police Complaints Commission is unfit for purpose and points to unfairness underpinning a crisis of legitimacy. As former Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer commented, 'Britain's criminal justice system fails the vulnerable'. It lets down law-abiding people too (including MPs) through free-style policing and a 'because we can' approach. It could it happen to you. Will anything ever change? When will politicians face up to the need for action? Roger Williams wrote Rough Justice as an ordinary citizen caught-up in a highly professional and impenetrable criminal process. He then discovered others with the same sense of inadequacy when faced with the might of the state. He hopes their stories and his suggestions might make a difference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problems in Value Theory takes a pro and con approach to central topics in aesthetics, ethics and political theory. Each chapter begins with a question: What Makes Actions Right or Wrong? Does Morality Depend on God? Do We Need Government? Contemporary philosophers with opposing viewpoints are then paired together to argue their position and raise problems with conflicting standpoints. Alongside an up-to-date introduction to a core philosophical stance, each contributor provides a critical response to their opponent and clear explanation of their view. Discussion questions are included at the end of each chapter to guide further discussion. With chapters ranging from why the government should never wage war to what is art and does morality depend on God, this introduction covers questions lying at the heart of debates about what does and does not have value.

Download or read book Adding Insult to Injury written by Nancy Fraser and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of communism, the rise of identity politics, and struggles over global governance have combined to create new challenges for the Left: How to do justice to legitimate claims for multiculturalism and democratization without abandoning the Left's historic-and still indispensable-commitment to economic equality? How to broaden the understanding of injustice by adding cultural and political insult to economic injury? Adding Insult to Injury tracks the debate sparked by Nancy Fraser's controversial effort to combine redistribution, recognition, and representation in a new understanding of social justice. The volume showcases Fraser's critical exchanges with leading thinkers, including Judith Butler, Richard Rorty, Iris Marion Young, Anne Phillips, and Rainer Frost. The result is a wide-ranging and at times contentious exploration of varied approaches to rebuilding the Left.

Download or read book Rough Music written by Tariq Ali and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 7, 2005, the murderous mayhem that Blair's war has sown in Iraq came home to London in a devastating series of suicide bombings. Two weeks later, with apparent impunity, security forces shot dead a young Brazilian electrician on his way to work. Rough Music is Tariq Ali's riveting response to these events. He lays bare the vengeful platitudes of Blair's war on civil liberties, mounts a scorching attack on the cozy falsehoods of the government's "consensus" on what the threat amounts to and how to respond, and denounces the corruption of the political-media bubble which allows it to go unchallenged. Finally, invoking the perseverance and integrity of the great dissenters of the past, he calls for political resistance, within parliament and without.
Book Synopsis Rough Waters by : Christine J. Walley
Download or read book Rough Waters written by Christine J. Walley and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rough Waters explores one of the most crucial problems of the contemporary era--struggles over access to, and use of, the environment. It combines insights from anthropology, history, and environmental studies, mounting an interdisciplinary challenge to contemporary accounts of "globalization." The book focuses on The Mafia Island Marine Park, a national park in Tanzania that became the center of political conflict during its creation in the mid-1990s. The park, reflecting a new generation of internationally sponsored projects, was designed to encourage environmental conservation as well as development. Rather than excluding residents, as had been common in East Africa's mainland wildlife parks, Mafia Island was intended to represent a new type of national park that would encourage the participation of area residents and incorporate their ideas. While the park had been described in the project's general management plan as "for the people and by the people," residents remained excluded from the most basic decisions made about the park. The book details the day-to-day tensions and alliances that arose among Mafia residents, Tanzanian government officials, and representatives of international organizations, as each group attempted to control and define the park. Walley's analysis argues that a technocentric approach to conservation and development can work to the detriment of both poorer people and the environment. It further suggests that the concept of the global may be inadequate for understanding this and other social dramas in the contemporary world.
