Download or read book Islands of Extreme Exclusion written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The island has historically played a special role in the cultural imagination – sometimes as a place of promise of tranquillity; at other times the remoteness has seemed attractive for more sinister reasons. Using islands for extreme exclusion has a long history and remains important for understanding the complexities of inclusive education. This volume presents new case studies of island exclusion of prisoners, people with disability, and refugees in the Global North and South. It also offers reflections on practices of re-inclusion and the larger issues of inclusive education.

Book Synopsis Cosmopolitan Place Making in Australia by : Jock Collins
Download or read book Cosmopolitan Place Making in Australia written by Jock Collins and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-23 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the historical and contemporary impact of minority immigrant and ethnic communities on the built and social environment in Australian cities, rural and regional areas. The emphasis is on the changing social use of these buildings – places of worship, ethnic clubs and community associations, immigrant restaurants and retail outlets, museums, memorials and landmarks and other places and spaces created by immigrant communities – rather than on their architectural merit. These places and spaces are sites of bridging and bonding social capital, of social interaction between immigrant communities and their local communities. In both the Australian cities and the ‘bush’ (an Australian colloquial term for non-metropolitan dwellers), the book investigates how the places built and used by minority ethnic communities have transformed Australian life in complex and sometimes contradictory ways. In Sydney, Brisbane and Perth, the book investigates the historical development of Chinatowns and their contemporary dynamics.

Book Synopsis Guy Grey-Smith Life Force by : Andrew Gaynor
Download or read book Guy Grey-Smith Life Force written by Andrew Gaynor and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guy Grey-Smith (1916-1981) remains one of the most important Australian artists of his generation. His artwork has been collected by every major public gallery in the country. Based in Western Australia, Grey-Smith exhibited nationally, participated in key international exhibitions, received Queens Honors Awards, and was a spirited contributor and active participant in the national arts scene. Granted access for the first time to Guy Grey-Smith's notebooks, war-time sketches, correspondence, and estate, author Andrew Gaynor draws a fascinating portrait of a country boy whose life was first liberated, then stalled, by the brutality of war. Teaching himself to draw while interned in prisoner of war camps, Grey-Smith went on to create some of the most enduring and powerful images of the Australian landscape, redolent with color, texture, and an unmistakable life force. He studied under the modernist sculptor Henry Moore at the Chelsea School of Art, London. Although primarily a painter, Grey-Smith also produced sculptures, pen and ink drawings, etchings, and wood blocks. This is the first book about this outstanding Australian artist and his remarkable 35-year career.

Download or read book War Time on Wadjemup written by Alexandra Ludewig and published by UWA Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The internment camp on Rottnest Island, established for enemy aliens from Germany and Austria-Hungary during World War I, can be considered a historical oddity, not least because Indigenous prisoners were also held captive there by Australian soldiers and warders. The coexistence of men from the most diverse backgrounds and social circumstances, some of whom did not even share a common language, yet still cohabited peacefully, serves on reflection as an inspiration. Thanks to a multitude of photographs, we can still gain a very good insight into this period in Australia, when rare scenes of fraternisation transcended contentious national and ethnic boundaries during the Great War.
