Book excerpt: "Rosita felt like a taco all wrapped up in Mama Elena's rebozo shawl." Three year old Rosita Chavez is dark eyed, cute, and cuddly. The Chavez family is desperately poor, struggling to get ahead. A humorous accident lands Rosita's gradpa, skinny Abuelo Don Juan and his donkey, right in the middle of wealthy Helen Winter's flower beds. The situation ignites a bond of friendship which develops between the two families. Don Juan is pressured by is wife, Lupita, to accomplish that which is beyond his reach. Wearing her long skirts, an apron and huarache sandals, Rosita's mother, Mama Elena is strong, hard working, loving and kind. Six year old Daniel Winters takes to her immediately. Mama Elena treats Daniel as if he were her own son. He becomes protective of Rosita. The two families' entertaining adventures exploring the historical sites of the City of Cuernavaca help develop a mutual understanding of their cultural differences. While Rosita and her family struggle to achieve what the Winters take for granted, the Winters on the other hand, begin to change their outlook on life and take pleasure in learning about the people around them. Helen Winters is determined to help the Chavez family in a way that does not hurt their pride. "Rosita in Mexico" is an educational and emotionally heart-warming book for children ages 9 to 99. Pointing out the cultural differences, the historical wealth, and the geographical diversity of Mexico, this book begins to fill the gap in understanding between the peoples inhabiting the North American Continent.

Along the way she faced permanent separation from her native home and family, loneliness, fear, and an encounter with danger in the desert. She was also introduced to an invisible, wonderful friend named God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everybody in the bar had to drop a quarter in the jukebox or be shamed by “Momo” Villarreal. It wasn’t about the money, Mary Ann Villarreal’s grandmother insisted. It was about the music—more songs for all the patrons of the Pecan Lounge in Tivoli, Texas. But for Mary Ann, whose schoolbooks those quarters bought, the money didn’t hurt. When as an adult Villarreal began to wonder how the few recordings of women singers made their way into that jukebox, questions about the money seemed inseparable from those about the music. In Listening to Rosita, Villarreal seeks answers by pursuing the story of a small group of Tejana singers and entrepreneurs in Corpus Christi, Houston, and San Antonio—the “Texas Triangle”—during the mid-twentieth century. Ultimately she recovers a social world and cultural landscape in central south Texas where Mexican American women negotiated the shifting boundaries of race and economics to assert a public presence. Drawing on oral history, interviews, and insights from ethnic and gender studies, Listening to Rosita provides a counternarrative to previous research on la música tejana, which has focused almost solely on musicians or musical genres. Villarreal instead chronicles women’s roles and contributions to the music industry. In spotlighting the sixty-year singing career of San Antonian Rosita Fernández, the author pulls the curtain back on all the women whose names and stories have been glaringly absent from the ethnic and economic history of Tejana music and culture. In this oral history of the Tejana cantantes who performed and owned businesses in the Texas Triangle, Listening to Rosita shows how ethnic Mexican entrepreneurs developed a unique identity in striving for success in a society that demeaned and segregated them. In telling their story, this book supplies a critical chapter long missing from the history of the West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1920, an unknown journalist named Katherine Anne Porter first sojourned in Mexico. When she left her "familiar country" for the last time in 1931, she was the celebrated author of Flowering Judas and Other Stories and had accumulated a wealth of experiences and impressions that would inspire numerous short stories, essays, and reviews, as well as the opening section of her only novel, Ship of Fools. In this perceptive study of Porter's Mexican experiences, Thomas Walsh traces the important connections between those events and her literary works. Separating fact from the fictions that Porter constantly created about her life, he follows the active role that she played in Mexican political and intellectual life—even to the discovery of a plot to overthrow the Mexican government, which eventually figured in Flowering Judas. Most important, Walsh discerns how the great swings between depression and elation that characterized Porter's emotional life influenced her alternating visions of Mexico. In such works as "Xochimilco," Porter saw Mexico as an earthly Eden where hopes for a better society could be realized, but in other stories, including "The Fiesta of Guadalupe," she depicts Mexico as a place of hopeless oppression for the native peoples. Mexico, Porter once said, gave her back her Texas past. Given the unhappiness of that past, her feelings toward Mexico would always be ambivalent, but her Mexican experiences influenced all her subsequent works to some degree, even those pieces not specifically Mexican in setting. Walsh's study, then, is an essential key for anyone seeking greater understanding of the life or works of Katherine Anne Porter.

Book excerpt: This new book analyzes the exploration and sustainable valorization of natural resources from the arid zones, putting special emphasis on the challenges that the industry faces in an era of sustainable development and ecological conservation programs. The volume describes the geographic and climatic characteristics as well as the natural resources from arid zones, divided into three main groups: a) microbiological resources as biotechnological tools and change agents to produce and/or obtain compounds with industrial or medicinal applications; b) plants as an important source of principal compounds or subproducts produced by natural adaptation to the extreme environmental conditions; and c) animal resources, which includes insects, animal residues, products or subproducts derived from animal sources, as well as poisons. The authors focus on the processes or bioprocesses used in the valorization and transformation of these three main groups for research purposes as well as for biotechnological processing to obtain important compounds for use in various industries. The information provided in this volume, Exploration and Valorization of Natural Resources from Arid Zones, can be used as reference for investigation, training, and education, and also as main tool in under- and postgraduate university education on the sustainable uses of resources from arid zones.
