This book was released on 2007-10-30 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Root-lesion nematodes of the genus Pratylenchus are recognised worldwide as one of the major constraints of crops of primary economic importance. Pratylenchus spp. comprises around 70 nominal species of worldwide distribution which parasitize a wide variety of plants. The book consists of ten chapters and presents summarised and specialised information concerning the importance of the Pratylenchus species in: agricultural crops, and their world distribution (chapter 1); taxonomy, systematic, general morphology and diagnostic traits of Pratylenchus spp. including new technologies based on biochemical and molecular analyses (chapters 2-6); biology, epidemiology, ecology, host-parasite relationships, and pathogenicity (chapters 7-9). Finally, it illustrates different management strategies for Pratylenchus species, including, crop rotation, host-plant resistance, chemical control, soil solarisation, and biological control (chapter 10).

This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Root-lesion nematodes (RLN) Pratylenchus thornei Sher and Allen, 1953 and P. neglectus (Rensch, 1924) Filipjev Schuurmans and Stekhoven are soil-borne pathogens of wheat that invade and feed on root host cells. In the Pacific Northwest (PNW) these species of nematode were found in 95% of sampled fields and were estimated to cause 37% - 50% yield loss in spring wheat. Resistance to P. thornei had previously been found in 78 Iranian landrace accessions. The accessions were tested for resistance to P. neglectus and 21 accessions were found to be resistant to both species. The dual-resistant landrace accession, AUS28451 (PI623470), was used to generate a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population by crossing it to the susceptible PNW cultivar, Louise. One-hundred and fifty F2:F6 derived RILs were genotyped using SSR and SNP based molecular markers. The RILs were then phenotyped using inoculated field soil greenhouse assays where nematodes counted at the end of a 12 week period. A new root rating method to determine nematode resistance was also developed and tested in the greenhouse assays. Resistance associated quantitative trait loci (QTL) were identified on chromosomes 1A, 2B, 4A, 5A, 5B, 6B and 7A using both phenotyping methods for P. thornei and P. neglectus. Canopy temperature and photosynthesis yield (phiPSII) were used to develop a prediction model for nematode population densities on resistant and susceptible cultivars planted in infested fields. The RIL population was used to verify the accuracy of the prediction model. Predicted nematode resistance associated QTL were identified on chromosomes 4A, 5A, 6A, 6B, and 6D. Root morphology observations suggested AUS28451 (PI623470) had increased root lignin content compared to Louise. Root lignin content was examined in the RIL population and associated QTL were identified on chromosomes 2D and 5B. With this research, three new methods for indirect Pratylenchus resistance screening have been developed. These methods include molecular markers associated with resistance, root ratings, and field stress measurements. With these methods breeders will be able to incorporate nematode resistance breeding into their programs using a variety of tools.

Book excerpt: When I conceived this book, what I had in mind was what I did not know about coffee-parasitic nematodes (CPNs). Indeed, after reading many papers and several chapters in books, I felt far from having a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Not only would it be a daunting task to retrieve the numerous articles, reports, theses and dissertations on CPNs published since 1878, but it would also be impossible to learn, on my own, from all the enormous experience acquired by nematologists and coffee growers in so many countries. Therefore, this book is dedicated to those with restless minds, who want to know more about CPNs and their importance in coffee production worldwide. This book has been diligently written by top scientists in their areas of expertise or country, and it has been meticulously edited to guarantee precision without compromising an enjoyable read. I learned a lot from this book...I’m sure you will too. Finally, I’d like to thank Zuzana Bernhart from Springer, who believed in this project and decided to publish it; Susan Casement, who revised all chapters for grammatical correctness; and all the contributors, without whom this book would never have became a reality. Book excerpt: New sources of tolerance and resistance to root lesion nematode are highly sought after due to limited breeding materials. Resistances of 16 cultivars were evaluated through inoculated greenhouse trials where multiplication of the pathogen was observed after 12 weeks of growth. No significant differences in multiplication factors (Rf= population final/population initial) were observed for the first trial (F test, p=0.11) though significant differences were evident between cultivars in the second trial (F test, p
