Book excerpt: In 1932 there appeared the work of SCHMORL and JUNGHANNS, Die gesunde und kranke Wirbelsiiule im Rontgenbild, which laid the foundations of diagnostic radiology of the spine. Since that time the discipline has been extended and refined in a systematic manner and our knowledge has been greatly enriched by the large number of monographs in which leading experts have assembled additional data. An encyclopedic treatment of all that is currently known requires not only that reference be made to all work published since 1932 in order to reveal the problems that remain but also that a serious attempt be made to contribute to the solution of such problems. For this reason, Professor TONDURY and Professor THEILER of Zurich, who know more than anyone else about the ontogeny of the spine, have been invited to display their erudition in this field. Should contra dictions or divergent opinions on certain points be revealed through this confrontation with radiologically obtained findings, so much the better; the effect of this could only be to spur workers in both disciplines on to more advanced research. We have only to recall how in Goethe's time the premaxilla was still the subject of controversy, yet this great man pursuing his studies in comparative anatomy and anthropology was able to prove its existence beyond all doubt. Mainz, Dezember 1974 L. DIETHELM Preface Our knowledge of spinal diseases and their X-ray images has certainly been enormously extended in recent decades, however, there still exist contradictory opinions which merely serve to cover up the gaps in our knowledge. Two good examples would be the genesis of "spondylolisthesis", or ree the controversy surrounding "persistent vertebral epiphyses", and "vertebral body edge separation."

Book excerpt: In response to the great demand for an English edition of the standard German handbook, Systematic Musculoskeletal Examination will soon be available. This comprehensive book contains up-to-date information for the orthopedic examination of the locomotor apparatus. In addition to the well-known techniques of the musculoskeletal examination, it also describes in detail the diagnostic techniques used in manual medicine. The numerous examinations are carried out according to five clearly defined examination stages which are the same for each joint and allow a systematic examination of the individual joint structures for functional disorders or disruptive effects (functional structural analysis). The examination is thus logically organized according to an outline, and the indications for each stage are based on the results of the previous stage and the summary of the functionally related body regions. The functions tests take into account the state of the art in biomechanics, and the symptoms requiring radiologic functional diagnosis are depicted. The systematized and streamlined examination procedure makes it possible to obtain and document results in a uniform manner. The all-inclusive nature of the text, guided by a well-designed systematic and methodical approach, will make it attractive to anyone dealing with the musculoskeletal system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose fulfilled by the se ries "Praktische Anatomie" (also referred to as "Lanz Wachsmuth" after its founders) is to make anatomists and clinical practitioners recog nize and build on, common ground their ideas and structures. The volume on the anatomy of the back is a supe rb illustration of how such a concept may be realized; it has been prepared by experienced members of the Swiss school, which enjoys a distinguished reputation in the fields of both anatomy and clinical medicine. For this reason I find it particularly appropriate that Springer-Verlag is publishing an English translation of this volume. This will make it possible to re ach beyond the confines of the German-speaking world a wider public who will also derive benefit from its content. Knowledge must not be confined by language barriers. This general principle is partic ularly applicable in situations where we are concerned about sick people. I am there fore glad to wish the English edition of this volume every success throughout the world. Würzburg WERNER W ACHSMUTH Preface The back is apart of the human body subject to degenerative changes and diseases that manifest themselves in many ways and with ever-increasing frequency. Almost every doctor is regularly confronted by patients with back complaints. Knowledge of the underlying anatomy must be the basis on which diagnosis and treatment are founded.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manipulative Therapy provides a systematic overview of chain reactions which are the basis of a rational holistic approach. These reactions are closely related to the upright human posture and to the "deep stabilisation system" as shown in the work of Richardson et al in Therapeutic Exercise for Spinal Stabilisation in Low Back Pain. This approach has meant a considerable advance in the therapy and rehabilitation of patients. It gives a balanced picture of the importance of musles, joints and soft tissues, under the control of the nervous system, the textbook aims to treat disturbance of function, the most common cause of pain in the motor system, in the most effective way. Locomotor system dysfunctions are shown to be treated very effectively using manual medicine techniques. Spinal column and joint mobility can be restored, and pain triggered by the autonomic nervous system can be positively influenced. This is a comprehensive source of information relating to pathogenesis, diagnosis, indications and treatment methods, incorporating the latest research findings. Radiological diagnosis is is shown as laying the foundation for successful diagnosis and treatment with manual medicine techniques. Typical conditions associated with pain in the locomotor system is presented and described in functional terms for the first time. The book concludes with chapters covering preventative aspects and expert assessment. Manipulative Therapy: Musculoskeletal Medicine is the follow on from: Manipulative Therapy in Rehabilitation of the Locomotor System, published by Butterworth Heinemann, 1985.
