Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many people, even Christians, who will not read Johns revelation letter for two reasons. First, they dont believe that it can be understood. Second, they are terrified of even thinking about reading of the deadly judgments of God that Johns revelation letter portraysthat is, the appalling plagues, famines, wars, and natural disasters that Johns letter discloses as having been pronounced against this present evil world, and they dont want to be any part of that, nor do they even want to be reminded of those dreadful things that they think are going to happen. Such is so sad, so very sad! One of the purposes of this book is to alleviate that fear completely, and to replace it by making the reading of Johns revelation letter a time of comfort and encouragement. That shall all be accomplished by illustrating how the deadly forces of destruction that John described in his revelation letter are not decreed against the Christiansthey will never fall upon Gods churchbut rather, they are in fact, the very powers of God that protect his church, shelter his children, and defend the Christian faith. All of that can be established by comparing the spiritual war that John witnessed in heaven with the carnal war that was fought between the Roman Empire and the church. That comparison is not difficult to establish, because both of those wars were actually the one and the same war. Once that correlation has been confirmed, Revelation becomes a letter of comfort and security, and a letter that replaces fear with hope. Another reason that even Christians will not read Johns revelation letter is because they do not think that it can be understood because it is so complicated, but God does not put books in his Bible that cannot be understood. Johns revelation letter can be understood, and that is the other purpose of this book, to make it understandable.

Book excerpt: Whilst we measurably dissent from a number of the conclusions which Knollys has derived from the Book of Revelation; we nevertheless align ourselves with the overall analysis, viz., that the Roman Catholic Institution has been, from its pagan roots and throughout its accursed history, in its masquerade of what the world calls Christianity, the greatest enemy of the true Gospel in existence, a black plaque indeed, which the Lord - the Righteous Judge - hath poured forth upon the inhabitants of the earth; and though veiled by popish priestcraft & religious confusion to the paramount glory of Christ in the Gospel to all that are given over to succumb to its spiritual harlotry, and drink of her intoxicating mixtures; yet this beast like that of the false prophet of counterfeit Christianity will be exposed and stripped bare of all his purple & scarlet attire to the Spirit instructed mind & contrite heart of every penitent sinner who has come out of this accursed system; and fled to Christ.

Book excerpt: The book of Revelation has confounded readers for nearly two millennia. Its subject matter can be extremely fearful when misunderstood and can lead to devastating consequences if manipulated. Like most eschatological matters, Church leaders, therefore, must be sensible and honest as they attempt to teach modern readers. Unfortunately, the book’s dense symbolism, literary variances, and even its uncertain past as an inspired document have led to irreconciliably diverse conclusions over which many Christians divide. Why must it be this way? This author offers a fresh approach to its narrative, focusing on how the original readers would have understood its contents along with its reflection in historical events, which should help twenty-first century readers ascertain its true meaning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Sixteenth Century Society's Roland H. Bainton Prize for History or Theology Paul C. H. Lim offers an insightful examination of the polemical debates about the doctrine of the Trinity in seventeenth-century England, showing that the philosophical and theological re-configuration of this doctrine had a significant impact on the politics of religion in the early modern period. Lim's analysis of these heated polemics shows how Trinitarian God-talk became untenable in many ecclesiastical and philosophical circles, leading to the emergence of Unitarianism. He demonstrates that those who continued to uphold Trinitarian doctrine articulated their piety and theological perspectives in an increasingly secularized culture of discourse. Drawing on both unexplored manuscripts and well-known treatises of Continental and English provenance, he uncovers the complex layers of the polemic: from biblical exegesis to reception history of patristic authorities, from popular religious radicalism during the Civil War to Puritan spirituality, from Continental Socinians to English anti-Trinitarians who claimed an independent theological identity, from the notion of the Platonic captivity of primitive Christianity to that of Plato as "Moses Atticus." Among this book's surprising findings are that Anti-Trinitarian sentiment arose in a Puritan ambience in which biblical literalism overrode rationalistic presuppositions, and that theology and philosophy were more closely connected during this period than previously thought. Mystery Unveiled fills a significant lacuna in early modern English intellectual history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this needed and highly anticipated new translation of the Theban plays of Sophocles, David Slavitt presents a fluid, accessible, and modern version for both newcomers to the plays and established admirers. Unpretentious and direct, Slavitt's translation preserves the innate verve and energy of the dramas, engaging the reader or audience member directly with Sophocles' great texts. Slavitt chooses to present the plays not in narrative sequence but in the order in which they were composed: Antigone, Oedipus Tyrannos, Oedipus at Colonus; he thereby underscores the fact that the story of Oedipus is one to which Sophocles returned over the course of his lifetime. This arrangement also lays bare the record of Sophocles' intellectual and artistic development. Renowned as a poet and translator, Slavitt has translated Ovid, Virgil, Aeschylus, Aristophanes, Ausonius, Prudentius, Valerius Flaccus, and Bacchylides as well as works in French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Hebrew. In this volume, he avoids personal intrusion on the texts and relies upon the theatrical machinery of the plays themselves. The result is a major contribution to the art of translation and a version of the Oedipus plays that will appeal enormously to readers, theatre directors, and actors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most ideas of sacrifice, even specifically Christian ideas, as we saw in the Reformation controversies, have something to do with deprivation or destruction. But this is not authentic Christian sacrifice. Authentic Christian sacrifice, and ultimately all true sacrifice (whether one is conscious of it or not) begins with the self-offering of the Father in the gift-sending of the Son, continues with the loving "response" of the Son, in his humanity, and in the Spirit, to the Father and for us, and finally, begins to become real in our world when human beings, in the power of the same Spirit that was in Jesus, respond to love with love, and thus begin to enter into that perfectly loving, totally self-giving relationship that is the life of the triune God. The origins of this are in the Hebrew Bible, its revelatory high-points in Jesus and Paul, and its working out in the life of the Church, especially its Eucharistic Prayers. Special attention will be paid to the atonement, not just because atonement and sacrifice are often synonymous, but also because traditional atonement theology is the source of distortions that continue to plague Christian thinking about sacrifice. After exploring the possibility of finding a phenomenology of sacrificial atonement in Girardian mimetic theory, the book will end with some suggestions on how to communicate its findings to people likely to be put off from the outset by the negative connotations associated with "sacrifice."

Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth sampling of the best satirical writings by Fr. Paul Mankowski, S.J., a brilliant, perceptive, and knowledgeable analyst of Church affairs during the early twenty-first century. Writing under the pseudonym Diogenes, Fr. Mankowski delighted his many readers with his keen observations and biting wit. Fr. Mankowski had a special gift for satire, and—appropriately for a man who had been a boxer in his student days—he never pulled his punches. Yet he could empathize with confused teenagers, elderly dementia patients, and ordinary Catholics in the pews. While teaching in Rome, he spent his Christmas vacations working among the poorest of the poor with the Missionaries of Charity, and some of his journal entries about these experiences are included in this collection. Diogenes could be a cynical commentator, but the man behind this persona was a committed and self-sacrificing Catholic priest.
