Eine kurze Skizze von der manchem heutigen Romanisten nicht mehr hinreichend gegenwartigen Thatigkeit dieses der Wissen schaft zu fruh entrissenen Gelehrten moge daher hier ihren Platz finden. Die Kenntnis von eini en seiner gedruckten Schriften wie von seinem handschriftlic en Nachlass verdanke ich seinem Sahne, meinem verehrten Collegen Prof. L. Schmidt hierselbst. Vielleicht veranlassen diese Zeilen einen Fachgenossen, dem die Studien V. Schmidts naher li en als mir, zu noch weiteren Mittheilungen oder zur Veransta tung einer theilweisen Neuausgabe seiner Arbeiten, fur welche handschriftliche Nach trage in des Verfassers Handexem laren zu Gebote stehen wurden. Am 16. September kunftigen Ja res werden es 100 Jahre seit V. Schmidt das Licht der Welt erblickte. Er wirkte zuerst als Collaborator und seit 1818 als Professor am Berliner Koll nischen Gymnasium, habilitirte sich am 9. Januar 1819 als Privatdocent an der Universisat und wurde am 28. April 1821 zum ausserordentlichen Professor ernannt, ziemlich gleichzeitig wohl auch zum Bibliothekar an der konigl. Bibliothek. Er starb am 11. October 1831 an der Cholera. J. Grimm erwahnt seinen Tod mit Bedauern in einem Briefe an von Lassberg (vgl. Germania v. Pfeiffer XIII, 375) Schmidts Nachfolger wurde 1843 Victor A. Huber in Marburg. Asking such fundamental questions as how singers managed to memorize such an enormous amount of music and how music composed in the mind rather than in writing affected musical style, Anna Maria Busse Berger explores the impact of the art of memory on the composition and transmission of medieval music. Her fresh, innovative study shows that although writing allowed composers to work out pieces in the mind, it did not make memorization redundant but allowed for new ways to commit material to memory. Since some of the polyphonic music from the twelfth century and later was written down, scholars have long assumed that it was all composed and transmitted in written form. Our understanding of medieval music has been profoundly shaped by German philologists from the beginning of the last century who approached medieval music as if it were no different from music of the nineteenth century. But Medieval Music and the Art of Memory deftly demonstrates that the fact that a piece was written down does not necessarily mean that it was conceived and transmitted in writing. Busse Berger's new model, one that emphasizes the interplay of literate and oral composition and transmission, deepens and enriches current understandings of medieval music and opens the field for fresh interpretations.
