Book Synopsis Before the Wall Came Down by : Rupert Stebbings
Download or read book Before the Wall Came Down written by Rupert Stebbings and published by Europa Edizioni. This book was released on 2024-06-19 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The narrative of Before The Wall Came Down takes place in many overlapping planes. Together with his personal experiences, the author worked and traveled in the company of friends, retracing the forays of a man who crossed Eastern Europe, meeting a myriad of people, some of whom have had a historical and relevant impact on his life, described with unexpected anecdotes. The description of a time that seems to have crystallized thanks to the supporting evidence of magnificent photographs, returns with nostalgia and melancholy through images that have become history: a peasant world that Rupert had the privilege of witnessing with his own eyes and, thanks to his lens, documenting and immortalising forever. Moments of real life which in some moments become hilariously humourous, a leap in time which opens a window onto a crucial historical period for the XX century: the fall of the Berlin Wall at the end of the 1980s, which in cascade is reflected throughout the Soviet bloc. A heartfelt story, to be read carefully. It’s impossible not to feel elegiac for those who in those years had the opportunity to take a trip and develop a camera roll, and that the author generously unveils. A reflection, too, compared to the bulimic consumption of images taken on cell phones and junk speed society of today. Rupert is a graduate of both Liverpool University and The London School of Printing. Having passed through London and New York he has been living and working in Medellin, Colombia since 2005 where he previously authored “The Viva Effect”.

Book Synopsis Entangled Histories of the Balkans - Volume Three by : Roumen Daskalov
Download or read book Entangled Histories of the Balkans - Volume Three written by Roumen Daskalov and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Balkan history has traditionally been studied by national historians in terms of separate national histories taking place within bounded state territories. The authors in this volume take a different approach. They view the modern history of the region from a transnational and relational perspective in terms of shared and connected, as well as entangled histories. This regards the treatment of shared historical legacies by rival national historiographies. The volume deals with historiograpical disputes that arose in the process of “nationalizing” the past. Contributors include: Diana Mishkova, Alexander Vezenkov, Roumen Daskalov, Tchavdar Marinov and Bernard Lory.

Book Synopsis Post-Communist Romania at Twenty-Five by : Lavinia Stan
Download or read book Post-Communist Romania at Twenty-Five written by Lavinia Stan and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2014 marked the 25th anniversary of the collapse of communist regimes in Eastern Europe. The events of 1989 are widely seen as having ushered in new all-encompassing reforms in almost all areas of life. In few other places were reforms more contested and divisive than in Romania, a country that suffered greatly under the sultanistic-cum-totalitarian dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu, faced the region’s only bloody anti-communist revolt, and as such had the longest to travel on the road from communism to democracy. We now have a generation’s worth of experience with these wrenching reforms that have deeply affected Romania’s political institutions and political culture, and ultimately allowed it to become a member of the coveted European Union club. This volume gathers key lessons for democratic theory and practice from Romania’s first twenty-five years of post-communist transformation. Written by leading experts in the field of Romanian Studies, the chapters focus on the most important factors that have shaped the country’s political transformation during the first 25 years of post-communism.

Book Synopsis Myth, Identity, and Conflict by : Anamaria Dutceac Segesten
Download or read book Myth, Identity, and Conflict written by Anamaria Dutceac Segesten and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2011-09-16 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myth, Identity, and Conflict: A Comparative Analysis of Romanian and Serbian Textbooks, by Anamaria Dutceac Segesten, is an examination of how history and politics became entangled in Romania and Serbia. Segesten's findings confirm the presence of mythologized versions of the past in the history textbooks of both countries over the entire fifteen-year period studied (1992-2007), despite claims for professionalization of textbook-making. Ultimately, Myth, Identity, and Conflict, by Anamaria Dutceac Segesten, questions the alleged power of history textbooks to make a difference in ethnically divided societies prone to conflicts.
Book Synopsis The Balkans and Caucasus by : Ivan Biliarsky
Download or read book The Balkans and Caucasus written by Ivan Biliarsky and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall character of the Black Sea region has been defined over time in various ways. For specialists in economy and trade, it has represented a region at the crossroads of the trade routes between Europe and Asia; for political scientists and historians, it has been a space of confrontation between the great terrestrial and naval powers; for the scholars attentive to its cultural dimensions, it has been a contact zone, a space of interaction between different peoples, religions and cultures. These attempts at a definition all revolve around an essential (and ambivalent) feature of the Black Sea as a factor of connection, a bridge, and at the same time a border, a dividing line between Europe and Asia, between the Baltic and the Mediterranean region. In this fluctuation between the two, the predominance of one over the other (“bridge” or “border”) has depended on a number of factors, first among them the distribution of power relations in the region. This volume, which originated in a symposium hosted by the New Europe College – Institute for Advanced Study in Bucharest, brings together contributions coming from scholars within the Black Sea region and outside it, in an attempt to look at the Balkans and Caucasus from a comparative and multi-disciplinary perspective, highlighting their differences, as well as their common features. The overarching question this volume and the papers included in it address – and leave open – is to what extent we are dealing with a coherent zone, whose past, present and future can legitimately be considered as being traversed by meaningful interrelations, suggesting a shared destiny.

Download or read book Digging Politics written by James Koranyi and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-12-19 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digging Politics explores uses of the ancient past in east-central Europe spanning the fascist, communist and post-communist period. Contributions range from East Germany to Poland to Romania to the Balkans. The volume addresses two central questions: Why then and why there. Without arguing for an east-central European exceptionalism, Digging Politics uncovers transnational phenomena across the region that have characterized political wrangling over ancient pasts. Contributions include the biographies of famous archaeologists during the Cold War, the wrought history of organizational politics of archaeology in Romania and the Balkans, politically charged Cold War exhibitions of the Thracians, the historical re-enactment of supposed ancient Central tribes in Hungary, and the virtual archaeology of Game of Thrones in Croatia. Digging Politics charts the extraordinary story of ancient pasts in modern east-central Europe.
