Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling book assesses the development of the mass media since the Romanian Revolution in December 1989 and the media's impact on cultural development, the public sphere, civil society and democracy. It controversially claims that Romania's failure to experience a thoroughgoing enlightenment project in its entire history remains a major obstacle for producing democratic ownership of the media and democratic development of society. Analyzing both the print and broadcast media and their respective effects on development, the book also discusses the effects of Romanian law on media and societal development, ethics, and media responsibilities. It concludes, however, that far from having an absolutely negative impact on Romanian post-communism, the media has helped produce a contradictory empirical form that equally contains positive moments in terms of subjective cultural development.

Book excerpt: A land of mountains, hills, and fertile plains, Romania is a tourist destination waiting to be discovered. It is a rich and complex country: a place whose cities are home to beautiful parks and vibrant cultural scenes; whose people welcome guests warmly into their homes, sharing the best of whatever they have, and party into the night, suffused by Latin joie de vivre. Buffeted over time between three great powers—the West, Russia, and Turkey—Romania betrays the cultural influences of each, and it can be a difficult place to get a handle on. Culture Smart! Romania provides an indispensable tool for the foreign visitor, digging deep behind the clichés, explaining many of the behavioral quirks of the people, smoothing your path toward better understanding, and outlining the many attractions—cultural, social, and geographical—that await you in this underexplored part of Europe.

Book excerpt: The current transformation of many Eastern European societies is impossible to understand without comprehending the intellectual struggles surrounding nationalism in the region. Anthropologist Katherine Verdery shows how the example of Romania suggests that current ethnic tensions come not from a resurrection of pre-Communist Nationalism but from the strengthening of national ideologies under Communist Party rule. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on Romania from 1945 to 2016, Socialist Heritage explores the socialist state's attempt to create its own heritage, as well as the legacy of that project. Contrary to arguments that the socialist regimes of Central and Eastern Europe aimed to erase the pre-war history of the socialist cities, Emanuela Grama shows that the communist state in Romania sought to exploit the past for its own benefit. The book traces the transformation of a central district of Bucharest, the Old Town, from a socially and ethnically diverse place in the early 20th century, into an epitome of national history under socialism, and then, starting in the 2000s, into the historic center of a European capital. Under socialism, politicians and professionals used the district's historic buildings, especially the ruins of a medieval palace discovered in the 1950s, to emphasize the city's Romanian past and erase its ethnically diverse history. Since the collapse of socialism, the cultural and economic value of the Old Town has become highly contested. Bucharest's middle class has regarded the district as a site of tempting transgressions. Its poor residents have decried their semi-decrepit homes, while entrepreneurs and politicians have viewed it as a source of easy money. Such arguments point to recent negotiations about the meanings of class, political participation, and ethnic and economic belonging in today's Romania. Grama's rich historical and ethnographic research reveals the fundamentally dual nature of heritage: every search for an idealized past relies on strategies of differentiation that can lead to further marginalization and exclusion.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 78% i.e First class, University of Birmingham, language: English, abstract: Cultural Diplomacy has played a vital part in the history of France’s international relations. In a report to the Chamber of Deputies on the functioning of the newly established educational and cultural institutes in East Europe in 1900, the French deputy Manuel Boucher set the rhetorical question, "What political operation or armed invasion was ever able, with less expenditure, to produce such important results?" (cited in Haigh 1974, p.22). France’s foreign policy in Central and Eastern Europe focused primarily on Poland and Romania. Political and cultural relations to Romania date back until the 18th century and still today Romania remains to be perceived as a strategic partner for France in Eastern Europe. One reason for this is the fact that Romania remains the most francophone European country whose official language is not French.Nearly a quarter of its population (22.44%) is estimated to be francophone and over half of its pupils at primary and lower secondary level study French. This represents the highest quota in a European country in which French has not the status of an official language (Eurostat 2013).Moreover, Romania has a strong affinity towards French culture and very good, long-standing political relations. According to the current Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta,it are these sound cultural and political relations which foster bilateral economic relations (Baragan, 2013). This allusion to the correlation of culture and economic collaboration represents the premise of this dissertation. The purpose of this research is to attempt an assessment of the long-term impact of France’s educational and cultural policies in Romania under the concept of Cultural Diplomacy for its economic relations with Romania in the late 20th and early 21st century.
