Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several years, the Thai popular culture landscape has radically transformed due to the emergence of “Boys Love” (BL) soap operas which celebrate the love between handsome young men. Boys Love Media in Thailand: Celebrity, Fans, and Transnational Asian Queer Popular Culture is the first book length study of this increasingly significant transnational pop culture phenomenon. Drawing upon six years of ethnographic research, the book reveals BL's impacts on depictions of same-sex desire in Thai media culture and the resultant mainstreaming of queer romance through new forms of celebrity and participatory fandom. The author explores how the rise of BL has transformed contemporary Thai consumer culture, leading to heterosexual female fans of male celebrities who perform homoeroticism becoming the main audience to whom Thai pop culture is geared. Through the case study of BL, this book thus also investigates how Thai media is responding to broader regional trends across Asia where the economic potentials of female and queer fans are becoming increasingly important. Baudinette ultimately argues that the center of queer cultural production in Asia has shifted from Japan to Thailand, investigating both the growing international fandom of Thailand's BL series as well as the influence of international investment into the development of these media. The book particularly focuses on specific case studies of the fandom for Thai BL celebrity couples in Thailand, China, the Philippines, and Japan to explore how BL series have transformed each of these national contexts' queer consumer cultures.

Book excerpt: If you are thinking of going to Thailand, you need to read this book! English tourist Col has the knack for putting his foot in it time and time again, making embarrassing cultural blunders in a country where whistling after dark will attract evil spirits, where pointing with your feet is the height of bad manners, and where there is definitely a wrong way to sit while wearing a sarong. In this dark romantic comedy about culture shock, Col has met and fallen for Lucky, a Thai girl, in his home town of London and follows her to Bangkok - where things don't turn out as he expects. Will he make it to one of those tropical beaches that he's heard so much about, or will Lucky get her way and drag him along to a series of Thai temples? What is the correct etiquette when you want to tell a Thai person that you've seen so many temples that you're 'templed out'?" And what about those friends of Col who wind him up by saying that Lucky's just after his money? Col knows better - doesn't he? templed out (tɛmpᵊld aʊt), adjectival phrase - an expression used by travellers to describe a physical and mental state of exhaustion induced by having visited a large number of temples.

Book excerpt: This book challenges assumptions about the motivations that drive women from relatively poor, developing countries to use intermarriage dating sites to find partners from relatively wealthy, developed countries. It is generally assumed that economic deprivation or economic opportunities are the main factors, but this book instead focuses on the work of women’s imagination in online cross-cultural relationships, including the role of desire, love and intimacy. The experiences of Thai women are used to explore how they initiate, develop and maintain love and intimacy with Western men across distance and time. The book shows that, in the absence of opportunities to search and meet partners from geographically distant parts of the world, the technology of the internet offers new ways of searching for and managing relationships and has significant consequences for local experiences and expectations of love and partnering. The book will be of interest to scholars and students with an interest in family and intimate life, gender and sexualities, Asian and Thai studies, globalization and nationalism, culture and media, sociology and anthropology.

Book excerpt: This volume looks at facets of cultural interactions between India and Thailand---two historically significant countries of the South East Asian region. For the first time a comprehensive discussion on historical and contemporary cultural interactions between Indian and Thailand has been attempted in this volume. Asianization has become an important contemporary concept and, in this context, understanding cultural exchange within Asia is an important exercise. The chapters in this volume include contributions from noted scholars based in India and Thailand on different areas of cultural exchange: from religion, to art, artefacts, clothing, music---especially Indian classical music, cuisine, and the contemporary use of shared civilizational tools in the cultural diplomacy of both countries. Written in a lucid and accessible language, the chapters in this insightful volume are of interest to academics and researchers of cultural studies, Asian studies, development studies, modern Asian history, policy makers and general readers.

Book excerpt: This is the true story of a self-confessed sexual zealot who, while satisfying his lust with bar girls in Hong Kong, Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand, is compelled by the intensity of his libido to find its deeper meaning through Tantra. Tantra teaches that the fast track to enlightenment and to God, is not celibacy as Buddha and Jesus taught, but Maithuna or sacred sex. In Tantra, Go-Go dancers and escorts are avatars of the goddess Shakti and can be used as spiritual rocket fuel. His love of women eventually persuades him to marry a Thai girl that creates an impossible dilemma in his life. He is torn between his love for one woman and his insatiable need for Go-Go dancers, who in Thailand are beautiful, affordable, and abundant. He fears his sex utopia in Thailand is threatened by the Islamic insurgency in the south. Beneath the face of tourist paradise, Thailand is afflicted with divisive political and religious unrest. Thailand is waiting for the new Buddha to return to establish a golden age of peace. But Buddha is not coming back and only the sex gods of Tantra can save Thailand. Only the sex gods can save the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do people communicate their romantic feelings? Gift giving is one way. Giving and receiving of gifts is a characteristic of intimate relationships. Gifts are a message, a form of communication with a tangible material object, about love, affection, or concern for the recipient. The "romantic gift" evokes a multitude of intertwined meanings: passion, intimacy, affection, persuasion, care, celebration, altruism, and nostalgia. They can also connote the negative images of obligation and reciprocity. Romantic gift giving may be practiced at rituals, during rites of passage, or for casual occasions, to affirm the continued importance of the romantic relationship. We may even romanticize the giving of gifts to the self, to nonhuman companions, and to others we do not know personally. If loving and giving are a practice, then romantic gift giving is a practice of loving with intimate—or would-be intimate—others. This book addresses gift giving among consumers attempting to express and construct romantic love. It lies at the intersection of consumption, markets, and culture. In societies shaped by the globalizing neo-liberal economic order, increasing wealth disparity, and a partially digitized social environment that they help to co-construct, it may be time to rethink romantic love. Gift giving is a key arena to do so, as gifts make love tangible and act as carriers of meaning as well as cultural symbols. In gift giving the meanings of romance are renewed, renegotiated, and reconstructed. Gifts, Romance, And Consumer Culture demonstrates a wide variety of scholarly work bearing on romantic gift giving using an interpretive consumer research perspective. The book introduces critical studies by scholars in this unfolding and new interdisciplinary field.

Book excerpt: During the early decades of the twentieth century, Thailand's capital, Bangkok, took on an increasingly cosmopolitan character-a development fueled both by global economic forces and a local revolution in communications. The 1920s were a particularly dynamic period of social and cultural transformation that had a profound impact on the development of Thai modernity. This book examines the growth of a polyphonous and often vociferous Thai public, a public that used a range of new media outlets to express themselves and clamor for a more just and equitable social order. Scot BarmZ mines a rich lode of previously ignored cultural ephemera found in popular newspapers, magazines, novels, short stories, film booklets, and cartoons to create a vibrant cultural history of early modern Thailand that moves beyond conventional, elite-based historical studies of the period. By focusing on such controversies and conflicts as the status of women, relations between the sexes, class antagonisms, and the growth of a commercial mass culture, this book offers a new interpretation of the key decade of the 1920s and its significance for contemporary Thailand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two travellers -a man and a lady-chance to sit side by side on a long-haul flight from East Africa to Bangkok (Thailand). After formal introductions, starting at the served-meal, the two soon get interested in each other's work, and then in each other's lives. One things leads to another and, before they realize it, the flight from Nairobi to Bangkok has an emergency stopover in a tiny island in the Indian Ocean, Male. Constraints in accommodation compel the airline to use pair-seating arrangements on the plane to slot into double-rooms in the hotels. The man (Justin) and the lady (Alice) have to share a room. Initially Alice squirms at the idea of sharing a room with a stranger, and requests that at least an extra bed be put into the room. However, the chat on the plane led Alice, who had checked in with light personal luggage but heavy emotional baggage, to believe that Justin was not just a man of character but was perhaps someone she could trust to do more for her. Asking for the extra bed was perhaps a ruse to give Alice time to work out her plan to entice Justin to get closer to her. Alice's problems were really hiding the skeletons in her cupboard, especially her liaisons with John in her workplace in Africa. But the John-experience had developed a sort of emotional-bravado in her that encouraged her to take the first step to get close to Justin. Alice's Plan B of sobs and a sexy nightie got Justin, a novice to emotional-play, to come on board. All the rigors of training both in religious principles and in Justin's responsible UN position came a cropper against the charms of a beautiful woman. Alice literally got her man: fully and completely hers. Justin's world collapses but he doesn't lose face. His apparent fall from that mighty level of austerity and asceticism is well cushioned by the wonderfully compensating companionship of not just a lovely woman but a person who taught him some genuine values of love. In a nutshell, it is a story of love: all beautifully worked out in a hotel room, in the small island of Male, in the Maldives, in the Indian Ocean -all starting off from Nairobi in East Africa on a Flight to Bangkok in Thailand. It is literally a story of Romance in the Air.
