This fascinating book celebrates a time when one could cross the Atlantic on the "Queen Mary" or speed across Europe on the "Orient Express," being pampered all the while. At journey's end there was the Ritz Hotel in Paris or the Excelsior in Venice to offer luxurious accomodations and the finest foods. Book excerpt: When 1772 Collides With 2012, Two Lovers Discover More Than They Ever Imagined in MAKE TIME FOR LOVE a Time Travel Romance by Louise Clark -- 2012, Massachusetts, Boston Area -- Career focused and success driven, Faith Hamilton isn't ready for love when she meets Cody Simpson, the chief software developer at the company where she works. He's everything she doesn't want in a man--analytical, focused on science, inflexible. Or so she thinks until she takes a chance on a date with him. His kisses melt her reservations but her heart remains frozen, trapped by the need to keep a secret: Her eccentric 18th century time-traveling ancestor, Andrew Byrne, who has a habit of dropping in without notice. Cody Simpson thinks Faith is the most beautiful woman he's ever seen. She's also the most annoying. He despises her hard-driving corporate-ladder-climbing mindset and ignores her while immersing himself in his development projects and neglecting his basic duties. Then fate intervenes. Andrew Byrne, Faith's out-of-town relative who has never used a computer and wears clothes that look remarkably like ones from the mid-eighteenth century, is hired as Cody's new assistant. When Andrew announces his intent to permanently stay with Faith in the 21st century, she needs Cody's help to transform him from an eighteenth-century landowner to a modern-day computer geek. Faith is the reason Andrew can move through time, a secret she guards for her own safety. But with Andrew bumbling through the basics of 21st century life and a budding romance with Cody, Faith must choose between guarding her secrets and trusting Cody enough to make time for love. Publisher's Note: This Time Travel Romantic Comedy from Louise Clark features clean language and mild sexual content. Fans of Victorine E. Book excerpt: It demonstrates that, even though Washington Irving's sojourn in Spain from 1826 until 1829 marked a distinct shift in the literary commodification of things Spanish, the transition from an enlightened to a romantic representation of Spain was a process triggered by a group of writers who produced Spanish travel narratives of lasting influence.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crescent and the Cross, or Romance and Realities of Eastern Travel, Vol. 1 of 2 This identity of the Present with the Past lends a solemnity to the former, and a vitality to the latter that no other country can inspire while the transition from the tumult and hurry of Europe to the silence and repose of the East, may be understood by those who have passed from the gay and turbulent thoroughfares of Naples to the desolate beauty of Pompeii. The contrast strikes forcibly on the imagination, and invests Oriental travel with a peculiar charm. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Back in the beginning days of America's Civil War, the women of the small town of Marlette, Michigan, in the very heart of the Thumb wanted to show their support of President Lincoln and the Union forces in some small way. They collectively designed and sewed a huge Union flag of 34 stars, four rows of eight with an extra star at the end in between each two rows. This precious flag was then given to a gentleman they knew who lived just to the south who was leaving for the war. Color Sergeant Thomas Henry Sheppard's story, along with that of the Battle Flag of Company E, First Michigan Cavalry, is one of the most incredible true stories to ever come out of the Civil War. The Detroit Free Press back in the 1880's called it "an episode of the Civil War which has a strong coloring of Romance", as the Press told of how the colors of the First Michigan Cavalry were protected as the red, white and blue bunting became more and more tattered and sun-faded and bullet-ridden, and still the flag "assumed a dignity and interest even beyond that which the colors have of their own right to every loyal man". Thomas' account intersects with the lives of two of the War's most famous Generals and is written by a close relative of the third. The Color Sergeant took the colors and with his regiment carried them to the front lines where they saw hot service, and from which many did not return. In his words, the 1st Michigan "fought through the Shenandoah, on Banks' advance and retreat, in the campaigns of Pope and Burnside, and did yeoman service at the Battle of Gettysburg. They were under fire twice at Winchester, at Middletown, Strasburg, Harrisonburg, Occoquan and Thoroughfare Gap."

This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to engage with the full range of American travel writing about nineteenth-century Ottoman Palestine, and the first to acknowledge the influence of the late-eighteenth-century Barbary captivity narrative on nineteenth-century travel writing about the Middle East. Brian Yothers argues that American travel writing about the Holy Land forms a coherent, if greatly varied, tradition, which can only be fully understood when works by major writers such as Twain and Melville are studied alongside missionary accounts, captivity narratives, chronicles of religious pilgrimages, and travel writing in the genteel tradition. Yothers also examines works by lesser-known authors such as Bayard Taylor, John Lloyd Stephens, and Clorinda Minor, demonstrating that American travel writing is marked by a profound intertextuality with the Hebrew and Christian scriptures and with British and continental travel narratives about the Holy Land. His concluding chapter on Melville's Clarel shows how Melville's poem provides an incisive critique of the nascent imperial discourse discernible in the American texts with which it is in dialogue.

Book excerpt: This first book-length study explores the history of postwar England during the end of empire through a reading of novels which appeared at the time, moving from George Orwell and William Golding to Penelope Lively, Alan Hollinghurst and Ian McEwan. Particular genres are also discussed, including the family saga, travel writing, detective fiction and popular romances. All included reflect on the predicament of an England which no longer lies at the centre of imperial power, arriving at a fascinating diversity of conclusions about the meaning and consequences of the end of empire and the priveleged location of the novel for discussing what decolonization meant for the domestic English population of the metropole. The book is written in an easy style, unburdened by large sections of abstract reflection. It endeavours to bring alive in a new way the traditions of the English novel.
