Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roman History The attempt to derive from the name of the city Of Rome certain conclusions as to its origin has been unsuccessful; those who would connect the word Roma with the name of the primitive river-god Ramon perhaps approach nearest to the truth, for the navigable stream was naturally the most important factor for the settlement on the Tiber, and Old Roman coins actually exhibit to us as stamp the stern of a ship, which we therefore may regard as the city's first escutcheon. As a tutor in Roman History, I have at times been accused by worried pupils of delighting over much in the heuristic method. This simply means that I like asking them questions and dislike impart ing information in tabloid shape. This is really the main object of this book also - to ask questions, to suggest to any student who may read it subjects for his own consideration and research. It has certainly not been my primary object to tell once more the often-repeated tale of Rome's history. To be in charge of a working-party in a trench has some advantages as well as responsibilities. To direct, to encourage, at times to take a hand this is similarly my desire in this book. Above all, it is meant to provoke enquiry, if not dissent, by the workers (a proceeding viewed with less favour in a trench). I hope that its main feature may turn out to be as it were a menu to the banquet. If taken as the banquet itself it will be Barmecide fare. In the appendix I have indicated after the name of each author the translation used. Here no name is given, the extracts were translated either by Mr. R. F. Scholz or by myself. In using the translations I have made a few slight changes in wording and punctuation. I have usually retained any important notes given in the translations. The illustrations are intended merely to suggest that pictures form a very important class of sources. In the appendix brief statements are given as to the provenance and description of these pictures. Most of our text-books are well illustrated, and their pictures should be utilized as far as possible for class room exercises. No fancy-pictures should be so used; only representations of actual remains, of statuary, or of Roman drawings. The students should describe what the picture represents and its historic importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Goldsmith's Roman History: For the Use of Schools To these objections there are some who may add that I have rejected many of the modern improvements in Roman history, and that every character is left in. Full possession of that fame or infamy which it obtained from its contemporaries, or those who wrote immedi ately after. I acknowledge the charge, for it appears now too late to rejudge the virtues or the vices of those men who were but very incompletely known even to their own historians. The Romans, perhaps, upon ma ny occasions, formed wrong ideas of virtue but they were by no means so ignorant or abandoned in general as not to give their brightest characters the greatest share of their applause and I do not know whether it be fair to try Pagan actions by the stanthrd of Christian morality. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Roman People an Elementary History of Rome There is little that is of more practical value to the young folk of to-day than the history of Rome. How a village king dom became a mighty republic, how the republic became a world-embracing empire, how that empire, the dread and pride of its millions of subjects, fell so low as to become the sport Of its own soldiers all this is, indeed, a tale of mar vel. But the history of Rome is more than a mere story. Many of the difficulties and many of the advantages Of the Roman Republic are akin to those of the American Repub lic. The solution of such problems as have already presented themselves in the United States is even now demanding the highest Wisdom Of the land. Other problems will arise in the near future. Roman history is a mighty object lesson, of value. To every citizen of our Republic, of especial value to the children into Whose hands the government will so speed ily pass. What is learned in years of maturity is an addi tion to one's mental equipment; what is learned in child hood becomes a part of the mind itself. That those Who read this book may find it of interest to-day, of service to morrow, is the Wish Of the author. Eva march tappan. March 1, 1910. He has not only care fully gone through all the essays, preparing them for press, but has undertaken the entire work of correcting the proofs - a task of no small difficulty considering the intricate nature of the notes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From the History of Rome The writer of this little book was not satisfied that her children should hear nothing but fairy tales and the stories of nursery life, now so popular. But she could find nothing else fit to read to them. There are, indeed, plenty of story-books drawing their materials from history, and professing to be intended for children. But they are not suited to very young children. They abound in words and ideas which a child of four or six years old not only does not understand, but cannot be made to understand. The writer, however, believed that it was quite possible to put portions of Livy and Plutarch into language which should need little or no explanation even to children of that age. She accordingly made the experiment. One story after another was written and read to her little boys. Whenever she discovered that a word or idea was unintelligible to them, she took pains to simplify it. She found that they thoroughly enjoyed these old tales from Roman history, and liked to hear them repeated again and again. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Private Life of the Romans On the other hand it is equally true that a knowledges of political history is necessary for the study of Private Antiquities. We shall find the Romans giving up certain ways of living and habits of thinking that seemed to have become fixed and characteristic. These changes we could not explain at all, if political history did not inform us that just before they took place the Romans had come into contact with the widely different ideas and opposing civilizations of other nations. The most important event of this sort was the introduction of Greek culture after the Punic wars, and to this we shall have to refer again and again. It follows from all this that students who have had even the most elementary course in Roman history have already some knowledge of Private Antiquities, and that those who have not studied the history of Rome at all will find very helpful the reading of even the briefest of our school histories.
