Book excerpt: This book is intended for mechanicians, engineering mathematicians, and, generally for theoretically inclined mechanical engineers. It has its origin in my Master's Thesis (J 957), which I wrote under the supervision of Professor Dr. R. Timman of the Delft TH and Dr. Ir. A. D. de Pater of Netherlands Railways. I did not think that the surface of the problem had even been scratched, so I joined de Pater, who had by then become Professor in the Engineering Mechanics Lab. of the Delft TH, to write my Ph. D. Thesis on it. This thesis (1967) was weil received in railway circles, which is due more to de Pater's untiring promotion than to its merits. Still not satisfied, I feit that I needed more mathe matics, and I joined Professor Timman's group as an Associate Professor. This led to the present work. Many thanks are due to G. M. L. Gladwell, who thoroughly polished style and contents of the manuscript. Thanks are also due to my wife, herself an engineering mathematician, who read the manuscript through critically, and made many helpful comments, to G. F. M. Braat, who also read an criticised, and, in addition, drew the figures together with J. Schonewille, to Ms. A. V. M. de Wit, Ms. M. den Boef, and Ms. P. c. Wilting, who typed the manuscript, and to the Publishers, who waited patiently. Delft-Rotterdam, 17 July 1990. J. J.

Book excerpt: Residual stress measurements were made in the zone of resolved shearing stress on five SAE 52100 upper test ball specimens with an average Rockwell C hardness of 63.2. These upper test ball specimens were run against lower test balls of nominal Rockwell C hardnesses of 60, 62, 63, 65, and 66 until either ft conditions included an or both components failed because of fatigue. Test conditions included an average race temperature of 150 F, a maximum (Hertz) compressive stress of 800,000 psi, and a highly purified naphthenic mineral oil lubricant. Fatigue lives of the upper test balls were compared with measured residual stresses in the subsurface zone of resolved shearing stress. The compressive residual stress induced in the upper test ball during running is a function of delta H, the hardness of the lower test balls minus the upper test ball hardness An interrelation is indicated among differences in com- ponent hardness, induced compressive residual stress, and fatigue life. Measured values of compressive residual stress within the zone of resolved maximum shearing stress ranged from 178,000 and 294,000 psi. The apparent maximum residual stress occurs above where delta H = 0.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last four decades, Tedric Harris' Rolling Bearing Analysis has been the "bible" for engineers involved in rolling bearing technology. Why do so many students and practicing engineers rely on this book? The answer is simple: because of its complete coverage from low- to high-speed applications and full derivations of the underlying mathematics from a leader in the field. Updated, revamped, and reorganized for the new millennium, the fifth incarnation of this classic reference is the most modern, flexible, and interactive tool in the field. What makes this edition so revolutionary? For starters, the coverage is split conveniently into two books: Essential Concepts of Bearing Technology introduces the fundamentals involved in the use, design, and performance of rolling bearings for more common applications; Advanced Concepts of Bearing Technology delves into more advanced topics involving more dynamic loading, more extreme conditions, and higher-speed applications. Furthermore, each book in this edition includes a CD-ROM that contains numerical examples as well as tables of dimensional, mounting, and life-rating data obtained from ABMA/ANSI standards. Whether you are interested in the mathematics behind the empirical values or methods for estimating the effects of complex stresses on fatigue endurance, Rolling Bearing Analysis, Fifth Edition compiles the techniques and the data that you need in a single, authoritative resource.

Book excerpt: Materials and mechanical engineering researchers studying wear, fretting, elastic indentation testing and other tribological processes frequently need closed-form solutions for various attributes of contacts. Materials and mechanical engineering researchers studying wear, fretting, elastic indentation testing and other tribological processes frequently need closed-form solutions for various attributes of contacts. These characteristics include contact law, pressure distribution, internal state of stress induced and the influence of friction. These solutions, scattered throughout the applied mechanics literature, are difficult to locate, are presented using a range of solution techniques, and express results in a way that is suitable only for experts in the field. `Mechanics of Elastic Contacts' uses a consistent set of recipes for the solution of all relevant problems, presents results in the simplest possible forms, and contains summaries using tabulated data. This reference source will provide a clear guide to elastic contacts for engineering designers, materials scientists and tribologists irrespective of their level of expertise in this important subject.

The control of wear is given extensive treatment with a thorough discussion of lubricant additives, solid lubricants and surface coatings. The effectiveness of coatings in suppressing specific forms of wear is described together with the methods of coating deposition. More than 1000 references are provided to give the reader access to more specialized information if required.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tribology is the science of friction, lubrication and wear of moving components. Results obtained from tribology are used to reduce energy losses in friction pro cesses, to reduce material losses due to wear, and to increase the service life of components. Contact Mechanics plays an important role in Tribology. Contact Mechanics studies the stress and strain states of bodies in contact; it is contact that leads to friction interaction and wear. This book investigates a variety of contact problems: discrete contact of rough surfaces, the effect of imperfect elasticity and mechanical inhomogeneity of contacting bodies, models of friction and wear, changes in contact characteristics during the wear process, etc. The results presented in this book were obtained during my work at the Insti tute for Problems in Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The first steps of this research were carried out under the supervision of Professor L. A. Galin who taught me and showed me the beauty of scientific research and solutions. Some of the problems included in the book were investigated together with my col leagues Dr. M. N. Dobychin, Dr. O. G. Chekina, Dr. I. A. Soldatenkov, and Dr. E. V. Tor skaya from the Laboratory of Friction and Wear (IPM RAS) and Prof. F. Sadeghi from Purdue University (West Lafayette, USA). I would like to express my thanks to them. I am very grateful to Professor G. M. L.
