Research within the field of behavioral interventions has found that parental attributions, the causal explanation's parents make to understand the meaning of their child's behavior, are associated with treatment acceptability and parental engagement for behavioral parent-focused intervention. However, this relationship has not been investigated for parent-mediated interventions focused on core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), such as social and communication skills. The primary goal of this exploratory study was to investigate the relationship between parental attributions for ASD-related behavior and treatment acceptability and engagement for parent-mediated intervention for ASD. N = 107 parents or primary caregivers of a child aged 3-6 years with an ASD diagnosis were asked to rate their treatment acceptability and engagement of a parent-mediated intervention and complete the Parental Attribution Questionnaire, among other measures. Parental attributions for all dimensions of child-referent attributions (internality, controllability, and stability) negatively predicted parent's ratings of treatment acceptability for parent-mediated intervention. No associations were found for any dimensions of parent-referent attributions. Results revealed that only the parental attribution of child-referent stability was related to engagement for parent-mediated intervention. Given that parental attributions can be readily changed prior to the start of the intervention, a better understanding of the role of parental attributions in parent-mediated interventions could help improve treatment outcomes for children with ASD.

Book excerpt: Many children, especially those with developmental disabilities, may present with problem behaviour which requires some form of intervention (e.g., Egger & Angold, 2006; Magee & Roy, 2008). Behavioural interventions are one of the most widely used and most empirically supported interventions for alleviating children's problem behaviour. Nevertheless, research has highlighted that treatment acceptability should also be considered an important criterion that may play a role in the success of behavioural interventions (e.g., Calvert & Johnston, 1990; Carter, 2007; Kazdin, 1980). Studies have identified numerous factors that may influence parental acceptability of behavioural interventions for their child's problem behaviour. In particular, parental attributions have received increasing attention as one of these possible factors (e.g., Mah & Johnston, 2008). However, very little empirical research has explicitly examined the potential relationship between parental attributions and treatment acceptability, and the findings were often limited by methodological issues. The present study extends the existing literature by exploring the relationship between parental attributions and treatment acceptability of behavioural interventions for problem behaviour in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Mothers of children with ASD aged 3 to 9 years (N = 139) completed survey measures that assessed demographics, parental attributions, treatment acceptability of parent-focused and child-focused behavioural interventions, severity of their child's disruptive behaviour, and severity of their child's ASD symptoms. The results showed that parental attributions of parent-referent stability, but not the other attributional dimensions, negatively predicted treatment acceptability of a parent-focused behavioural intervention, even when severity of disruptive behaviour was statistically controlled. Conversely, no associations were found between any attributional dimension and treatment acceptability of a child-focused behavioural intervention. Preliminary analyses also revealed that mothers' ratings of the severity of their child's disruptive behaviour were significantly negatively correlated to the acceptability of both parent-focused and child-focused behavioural interventions. The results have potential implications for professionals to identify and challenge distorted attributions of parent-referent stability in order to promote parental acceptance of a parent-focused behavioural intervention for problem behaviour in children with ASD.

The current study examines early interventionists' use of specific techniques to support parent engagement in community services for families of children at-risk for autism spectrum disorder. A total of 15 therapists and 18 families were recorded across 54 videos of early intervention. Seven of the therapists had received training in a specific parent-mediated intervention and parent engagement strategies (in a prior study), while the remainder were recorded delivering care as usual (control group, n=8). Observational coding was used to measure and characterize therapists' use of engagement strategies directed at the parent during therapy sessions across groups. Mixed model analyses indicate that trained therapists were significantly more likely to be using empirically supported parent engagement strategies than usual care therapists. This study emphasizes the importance of equipping therapists with the skills to effectively involve parents in their child's intervention as a way to promote the quality of intervention delivered in community settings.

In fact, parent mediated Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention (EIBI) programs have become a popular method of treatment in recent years. Studies examining these programs have demonstrated that a number of variables may significantly impact the outcomes of EIBI. Moreover, an examination of the psychotherapy literature underscores the importance of a strong parent-therapist alliance as a correlate of positive processes and outcomes in child therapy; while there is very little research examining the working alliance as a factor in parent consultation. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between the working alliance and the consultation process in parent-mediated EIBI for young children with ASD. Forty-four parents of children with an ASD, who were also conducting home-based EIBI programs, completed the Working Alliance Inventory (WAI) (Horvath & Greenberg, 1989) plus other measures that assessed treatment process and outcome. In addition, eight independent consultants completed similar measures to assess perceptions of alliance, process, and outcomes of their consultees. The results showed parent ratings of the working alliance were significantly correlated with parent ratings of treatment acceptability for child treatment as well as for parent consultation. Parent ratings of alliance also correlated significantly with parent ratings of parent progress in consultation and child progress in treatment. Consultant ratings of alliance were significantly correlated with both parent progress and parent improvement in consultation. This suggests that the working alliance may be a contributing factor to the process and outcome of consultation with parents of children with ASD. The results of the present study were compared to the current literature on the therapeutic alliance and relationship factors in consultation. The limitations of the present study and suggestions for future research are also discussed.

Understanding the active ingredients of these evidence-based practices (EBP) could simplify their implementation and benefit the diverse children, families, and communities served by the public early intervention system. The current study investigated whether the attentional component of the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM), an EBP developed for toddlers with or at risk for ASD, is an active ingredient of the parent treatment package. Four children with ASD, ages 18-26 months old, and their respective parents participated in a single-subject multiple baseline designed study. To compare the effects of parent-implemented core components of ESDM on child behaviors, parents were taught a specific component each week; ten-minute recordings of parent-child dyad interactions during baseline and treatment sessions were coded for child and parent behaviors. Although positive changes in children's face gaze, coordinated communication, and social initiation were observed, parents did not meet fidelity in their demonstrated use of attentional strategies during treatment, making it difficult to speculate about a causal link between parents' use of attentional strategies and positive changes in child behavior. To ensure fidelity of implementation, future studies aimed at investigating this question might have a clinician or trained interventionist deliver the intervention in isolated components to determine the effects of different components and different sequences of components on child behavior. The results of such a study might better inform adaptation of ESDM and other EBP into community settings.

This study aimed to: a) examine changes in parents' use of four ABA-based strategies during parent-child free play interactions over the course of intervention (entry, 2 months into the intervention, 4 months into the intervention, and exit) and b) explore the relationship between parents' use of strategies and children's joint engagement and language outcomes over time. The current study was a secondary data analysis of a randomized controlled trial that compared two different interventions for children with ASD. Children (n=156) with limited expressive language ability received either 6 months of DTT or JASPER from an interventionist. In the last 8 weeks of intervention, parents received weekly parent training in whichever intervention their children were randomized to. Parent strategies (responsiveness, pacing, prompting, and environmental arrangement), child joint engagement, and child language were coded from a 10-minute free-play assessment that was collected at each timepoint. Results indicated that parents increased in their appropriate use of parent strategies over time. Parents' pacing and environmental arrangement were related to children's joint engagement across time and across treatment groups, while only parents' pacing was related to children's language outcomes. Implications for parent-child interactions and for parent trainings within early intervention contexts are discussed.
