Book excerpt: Taiwanese enterprises are efficiently producing a great deal of goods they had no experience in at all a few years ago. Moreover, in modern economies an increased utilisation of more and more advanced technologies as well as the more intensive use of physical and human capital can be observed. In this regard, the economic development of Taiwan is considered to be a complementary process of capital accumulation, innovation and learning. This economic evolution primarily takes place within the corporate sector. However, in reality the real activities of enterprises cannot be separated from their financial counterpart. Therefore, it is assumed that financial general conditions influence the investment and innovation behaviour of companies and vice versa. Regarding the above-outlined complementarities, it seems to be appropriate to include the heterogeneity of the company sector into the analysis. Here it has to be taken into consideration that small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) contribute to a great deal of entrepreneurship, innovation and learning that play a decisive role in the process of economic development. In the spirit of Schumpeter (1912) it is argued that the importance of smaller enterprises is not adequately disclosed in statistical data. Furthermore, SMEs may have advantages as far as the implementation of new technology in general and new capital-embedded technology in particular is concerned. There is evidence that Taiwanese SMEs are playing a decisive role in technology assimilation as well as in the implementation of further technological advancements because of their entrepreneurial characteristics. However, most economic contributions consider entrepreneurship to be exogenous. Therefore, a few characteristics of the Taiwanese economy are presented suggesting why entrepreneurship is so prevalent in Taiwan's economy. In this respect, the relationship between competitive environment and entrepreneurship seems to be a matter of special importance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the arrival of the twenty-first century, Taiwan was widely regarded as a successful model of a country which had not only transformed herself from an underdeveloped economy into a high-tech industrialised island, but had also undergone a revolution from an authoritarian regime to a democratic one. Taiwan is now experiencing a significant economic slowdown and facing multifaceted challenges including low productivity, stagnant innovation culture of small and medium-sized enterprises, ageing population, sustainable energy mix, pension reform, upgrading of human resources, devising competition policy to provide incentives for innovation as well as to limit abuses from monopolies, warding off competition from countries with lower labour cost and managing complicated cross-Strait relationship with China. The edited book looks at Taiwan’s past successful development model, summarises Taiwan’s current situation, outlines the future challenges beyond the year 2020 and provides policy recommendations in the aforementioned aspects. The contributors of this volume are accomplished veteran scholars in the fields. Several of them used to be policy-makers at the level of ministers or deputy ministers. The book offers not only academic contribution but policy-relevant insights.
Book Synopsis The Rise of a New World Economic Power by : Y. Dolly Hwang
Download or read book The Rise of a New World Economic Power written by Y. Dolly Hwang and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1991-07-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the most comprehensive analysis of Taiwan's economic development available to date, Y. Dolly Hwang traces the economic, political, and historical factors that enabled the island to transform itself from a poor country burdened with heavy foreign debt and rampant inflation into an emerging world economic power in a period of only forty years. Hwang explores the role played by the cultural and individual aspirations of the Taiwanese; the improvements in political, social, and educational life that were made possible by the island's economic growth; Taiwan's growing contribution to the global economy; and the country's ability to rapidly narrow the technological gap between itself and the industrialized nations. Throughout, Hwang emphasizes the dynamic interrelationships among the various factors that have created Taiwan's phenomenal success. Following an overview of Taiwan's postwar economic development, Hwang surveys events in Chinese history which laid the groundwork for Taiwan's rise to a world economic power. Hwang then devotes separate chapters to the influence of Taiwan's struggle for survival on its economic development, the role of government and the technocrats, and the contribution of specific economic policies, particularly the drive to develop an export-based economy. Subsequent chapters address industrialization, international trade, Taiwan's monetary, fiscal, and financial system, Confucianism and the capitalist spirit in Taiwan, entrepreneurs and small- to medium-sized enterprises, and the parts played by the United States and Japan in Taiwan's economic development. The concluding chapter looks at likely future scenarios for the island nation, including a possible reunification with mainland China. Students of economic history, economic development, and Asian Studies will find Hwang's study enlightening reading.

Download or read book Making Money written by Gary G. Hamilton and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the 1950s, Taiwan rapidly industrialized, becoming a tributary to an increasingly "borderless" East Asian economy. And though President Trump has called for the end of "American carnage"—the loss of U.S. manufacturing jobs—domestic retailers and merchandisers still willingly ship production overseas, primarily to Taiwan. In this book, Gary G. Hamilton and Cheng-shu Kao show how Taiwanese businesspeople have played a tremendous, unsung role in their nation's continuing ascent. From prominent names like Pou Chen and Hon Hai to the owners of small and midsize firms, Taiwan's contract manufacturers have become the world's most sophisticated suppliers of consumer products the world over. Drawing on over 30 years of research and more than 800 interviews, Hamilton and Kao tell these industrialists' stories. The picture that emerges is one of agile neo-capitalists, caught in the flux of a rapidly changing landscape, who tirelessly endeavor to profit on it. Making Money reveals its subjects to be at once producers of economic globalization and its byproducts. While the future of Taiwanese business is uncertain, the durability of demand-led capitalism is not.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By serving as a conduit for knowledge spillovers, entrepreneurship is the missing link between investments in new knowledge and economic growth. The knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship provides not just an explanation of why entrepreneurship has become more prevalent as the factor of knowledge has emerged as a crucial source for comparative advantage, but also why entrepreneurship plays a vital role in generating economic growth. Entrepreneurship is an important mechanism permeating the knowledge filter to facilitate the spill over of knowledge and ultimately generate economic growth.
