Two issues are investigated: (a) the validity of the assumptions on which the nature and functions of practical activities in science teaching have been determined, and (b) the effects of a variety of practical activities on different components of the educational process mainly at the secondary level. In particular, the paper seeks current educational thinking and includes research findings at the pre-university levels. These findings revolve around several questions related to science teaching including (a) what the relationship is between curriculum objectives and practical activities in science teaching; (b) what the effect is of the nature of science on the nature and role of practical activities; (c) what the psychological and pedagogical considerations are underlying practical activities; and (d) what the relationship is between different modes and degrees of practical activities and different educational outcomes.
