Book excerpt: "Rogue Cartoonist" tells the story of an independent artist and muckraker named Ben Garrison. In 2008, the big banks were bailed out. Ben wrote his senators and congressman and asked them to vote against the bailout, but the bill passed anyway. Ben decided voting was not effective. He wanted to do more. He wanted to do what the mainstream media wasn't doing. He wanted to ring alarm bells. He became a citizen muckraker. In 2009, he decided to draw editorial cartoons to help create awareness of a growing police state, corrupt politicians, and a dysfunctional system of money. He began uploading the cartoons to message boards on the Internet. They spread like wildfire. Many went 'viral.' Ben's cartoons were republished on many respectable blogs. He received a lot of encouraging email. Then a legion of Internet trolls began attacking him. He received hate mail. His cartoons were altered by anonymous entities. The trolls defaced his work into anti-Semitic and racist hatred while making sure they left his name on the cartoons. They spread the libel daily and for five long years. Internet search engines began picking up the hate. Ben's reputation was ruined by an invisible horde of haters. At first he decided to ignore the trolls, but they didn't grow bored. Instead they ramped up their attacks on social media. Cyber bullying and trolling have become a big problem on the Internet. Ben explains that dark side and in his book he unmasks a few of the trolls. He explains why it's difficult to bring them to justice. He describes the popularity of Internet memes among young people. His book encourages others to become citizen muckrakers. It also serves as a warning--those who are effective can also face massive attacks from anonymous trolls who are out to shut down the free speech of those speaking out against government corruption.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a time of unprecedented political, social, and cultural upheaval in U.S. history, one of the fiercest battles was ignited by a comic book. In 1963, the San Francisco Chronicle made 21-year-old Dan O'Neill the youngest syndicated cartoonist in American newspaper history. As O'Neill delved deeper into the emerging counterculture, his strip, Odd Bodkins, became stranger and stranger and more and more provocative, until the papers in the syndicate dropped it and the Chronicle let him go. The lesson that O'Neill drew from this was that what America most needed was the destruction of Walt Disney. O'Neill assembled a band of rogue cartoonists called the Air Pirates (after a group of villains who had bedeviled Mickey Mouse in comic books and cartoons). They lived communally in a San Francisco warehouse owned by Francis Ford Coppola and put out a comic book, Air Pirates Funnies, that featured Disney characters participating in very un-Disneylike behavior, provoking a mammoth lawsuit for copyright and trademark infringements and hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages. Disney was represented by one of San Francisco's top corporate law firms and the Pirates by the cream of the counterculture bar. The lawsuit raged for 10 years, from the trial court to the US Supreme Court and back again.

Book excerpt: Rogue Symmetry: Dorks, Dandruff, and Jellybeans is the first single panel comic book by cartoonist, Derrick G. Wood. Introduction: Awakening with a giggle. Covered in sweat. That is how Rogue Symmetry began. The idea of a health food vending machine placed right next to a soda machine was how it started in the dream. Then the familiar, "I'm with stupid" t-shirt descended from a cloud, transformed into a sign, and rested proudly upon the healthy snack receptacle. When I woke up, I jotted it down in my notebook. Until this time, that book was filled with story ideas, poetry, and wanna-be-but-never-will-be song lyrics. This was something new. Something much more uplifting and profound. This was something that actually made me feel good. Over the next couple months, I filled up several journals with every funny little cartoon that popped into my head. It wasn't like I was trying to think up funny stuff, but rather, like someone was pushing these ideas into my mind. Having never seriously drawn before, it took me a while to realize that I should try and draw one of these cartoons out and make it look like a real comic. I decided to start with the vending machine idea. It didn't come out as I had envisioned it, and though I was disappointed to discover that I wasn't an instant Bill Watterson, I told myself that I wouldn't give up. I colored that cartoon and immediately created a blog where people could laugh at my ideas and watch as I improve my art skills. When we look at comics in the paper or online, we generally see the result of the cartoonist's hard work and dedicated years of practice. We don't get to see them struggle to draw a hand, figure out which fonts to use, how to create backgrounds, or how to color their creations. No, it is there exactly as the creator intended it to look. Not with Rogue Symmetry. This book covers my VERY first cartoon and takes you along my awkward journey, my struggle, to figure out this thing called drawing. Like watching a bird's first flight (which is usually its first fall too), it isn't always going to be pretty. The key is to get up on the tree and jump again! Rogue Symmetry won't be the best drawn comic you've ever seen, but it will be the most honest. "Warts and all" as they say. -Derrick G. Wood www.roguesymmetry.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horizons of Difference offers twelve original essays inspired by Luce Irigaray's complex, nuanced critique of Western philosophy, culture, and metaphysics, and her call to rethink our relationship to ourselves and the world through sexuate difference. Contributors engage urgent topics in a range of fields, including trans feminist theory, feminist legal theory, film studies, critical race theory, social-political theory, philosophy of religion, environmental ethics, philosophical aesthetics, and critical pedagogy. In so doing, they aim to push the scope of Irigaray's work beyond its horizon. Horizons of Difference seeks conversations that Irigaray herself has yet to fully consider and explores areas that stretch the limits of the notion of sexuate difference itself. Sexuate difference is a unifying mode of thought, bringing disparate disciplines and groups together. Yet it also resists unification in demanding that we continually rethink the basic coordinates of space, place, and identity. Ultimately, Horizons of Difference insists that the fragmented, wounded subjectivities within the dominant regime of masculine sameness can inform how we negotiate space, find place, and transform identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Comic Irishman makes heretofore unacknowledged distinctions among different types of comic Irishmen and convincingly casts away the stereotyped version of the stage Irishman. It shows how the Irish comic character—whether a blundering fool or a lazy, fun-loving fellow—evolved into a glib and witty rogue. The book is a critical study of modern Irish fiction and drama. The first part provides an analysis of the various Irish comic figures which were popular in the nineteenth century. These are discussed within a social and historic framework because they were to a large extent shaped by the erosion of Gaelic culture under the impact of English government. In the process of shifting from one cultural nexus to another, the Irishman came to be regarded as highly inferior to his English counterpart, yet amusing because of his difficulty with the English language and his rebellious, unpredictable behavior. The second part of the book discusses the writings of such twentieth-century authors as James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, Sean O'Casey, and Flann O'Brien, who concentrated on the analysis of the stage Irishman. Some brilliantly exploited the comic tradition, while other used satire to explode what they perceived as a debasing myth.
