Book Synopsis Rodents in Tropical Rice by : Michael W. Fall
Download or read book Rodents in Tropical Rice written by Michael W. Fall and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the rice-growing areas of the world, rats and related species have attained major pest status. Rodent damage to rice is widespread throughout the rice-growing regions of the world, but its intensity varies from place to place and season to seson. Because much rice is grown on small farms, heavy damage in a few fields can be a serious economic problem for the individual farmer. A nearly overwhelming variety of methods for controlling rodents have been suggested, discussed, recommended, or tried. Unfortunately, little distinction is usually made between killing rats and protecting crops from damage. The major criterion for evaluating agricultural rodent control methods should be the degree of crop protection they afford. The process of protecting fields could be accomplished by killing rats, excluding them, or making the corp areas less suitable for rats to occupy. A variety of physical, chemical, and biological control methods have been suggested by various of methods for each situation should be based on cost, practicality, and cultural acceptability as well as on effectiveness. Rat control, like other forms of crop protection, should be considered as an integral part of the agricultural production process. Since the labor and capital available to each farmer are limited, extension workers have an important role in helping the farmer find efficient ways to allocate his time and resources to produce and protect his crop.
Book Synopsis The Rice Rats of North America (Genus Oryzomys) (Classic Reprint) by : Edward Alphonso Goldman
Download or read book The Rice Rats of North America (Genus Oryzomys) (Classic Reprint) written by Edward Alphonso Goldman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rice Rats of North America (Genus Oryzomys) Species inhabiting forested areas usually become very abundant in clearings where a ground cover is allowed to grow. Rice rats appar ently are not so injurious to crops as some other rodents, but like the cotton rats and meadow mice increase locally to excessive num bers and then consume, in the aggregate, very large quantities of forage. Methods of poisoning that have proved effective in checking the ravages of meadow mice could probably be utilized with similar success in the control of rice rats. Owing to their nocturnal habits these mice are preyed upon by owls and doubtless by many carnivor ous mammals. The rice rats and allied members of the great murine family to which they belong are the most numerous of American mammals, and their economic relations should be better known.
