Book Synopsis Flying beyond the stall by : Douglas A. Joyce
Download or read book Flying beyond the stall written by Douglas A. Joyce and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The X-31 Enhanced Fighter Maneuverability Demonstrator was unique among experimental aircraft. A joint effort of the United States and Germany, the X-31 was the only X-plane to be designed, manufactured, and flight tested as an international collaboration. It was also the only X-plane to support two separate test programs conducted years apart, one administered largely by NASA and the other by the U.S. Navy, as well as the first X-plane ever to perform at the Paris Air Show. Flying Beyond the Stall begins by describing the government agencies and private-sector industries involved in the X-31 program, the genesis of the supermaneuverability concept and its initial design breakthroughs, design and fabrication of two test airframes, preparation for the X-31's first flight, and the first flights of Ship #1 and Ship #2. Subsequent chapters discuss envelope expansion, handling qualities (especially at high angles of attack), and flight with vectored thrust. The book then turns to the program's move to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center and actual flight test data. Additional tasking, such as helmet-mounted display evaluations, handling quality studies, aerodynamic parameter estimation, and a "tailless" study are also discussed. The book describes how, in the aftermath of a disastrous accident with Ship #1 in 1995, Ship #2 was prepared for its outstanding participation in the Paris Air Show. The aircraft was then shipped back to Edwards AFB and put into storage until the late 1990s, when it was refurbished for participation in the U. S. Navy's VECTOR program. The book ends with a comprehensive discussion of lessons learned and includes an Appendix containing detailed information.

Book Synopsis Final Assembly and Checkout Alternatives for the Joint Strike Fighter by : Cynthia R. Cook
Download or read book Final Assembly and Checkout Alternatives for the Joint Strike Fighter written by Cynthia R. Cook and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2002 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Defense asked RAND to examine alternatives for the final assembly and checkout (FACO) process of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). The authors considered alternatives to Lockheed Martin's current plan of carrying out all JSF FACO work at its Fort Worth, Texas, plant. RAND looked at single- and multiple-site options for performing FACO at four plants across the country. The authors found that no efficiency, effectiveness, or cost reasons exist to move FACO operations, or to split them between two sites or across multiple sites.
Download or read book Skunk Works written by Leo Janos and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2013-02-26 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic history of America's high-stakes quest to dominate the skies is "a gripping technothriller in which the technology is real" (New York Times Book Review). From the development of the U-2 to the Stealth fighter, Skunk Works is the true story of America's most secret and successful aerospace operation. As recounted by Ben Rich, the operation's brilliant boss for nearly two decades, the chronicle of Lockheed's legendary Skunk Works is a drama of Cold War confrontations and Gulf War air combat, of extraordinary feats of engineering and human achievement against fantastic odds. Here are up-close portraits of the maverick band of scientists and engineers who made the Skunk Works so renowned. Filled with telling personal anecdotes and high adventure, with narratives from the CIA and from Air Force pilots who flew the many classified, risky missions, this book is a riveting portrait of the most spectacular aviation triumphs of the twentieth century. "Thoroughly engrossing." --Los Angeles Times Book Review
