Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Rockingham County, North Carolina, is inseparable from the history of its streams and the textile communities which gradually formed around them. From the mighty Mayo, the location of the ill-fated mill fortress of Avalon in the early 1900s, to the birth of sweet Eden along the calm Smith River in the late 1960s, the residents of Rockingham County entered the twentieth century with an economy fueled by water--hydro dams for cotton mills, gristmills, and lumber yards--and by the sweat of the people; men, women and children dedicated to working hand-in-hand in the Southern spirit of cooperation for the betterment of their neighborhoods and towns. From Avalon to Eden chronicles the tragedies and triumphs pertinent to the development of present-day Rockingham County as seen through the keen eyes of postcard photographers. These gentlemen, some employed by cotton mills, captured on film the optimism and the hardships, the architecture and the landscape of village life in Avalon, Stoneville, Mayodan, Madison, Wentworth, Reidsville, and Eden. From the portrait of doffers, children employed by the factories, sitting among the ash ruins of Avalon, to the festive panoramic of World War I survivors returning by train to Draper, Spray, and Leaksville (now Eden), this book offers historical insight--it is a grand road map through times treasured and a geography all but forgotten.

THE NEUGENTS CLOSE TO HOME is a large-scale book of 66 black and white photographs of one North Carolina family. I began photographing the Neugents in 1987. I had chosen them as subjects because of the uniqueness of their lifestyle. What I found fascinating about them was their stubborn commitment to the attitudes more reminiscent of tobacco farmers of the early part of the century. They were throwbacks who continued to struggle within a system that had been replaced by agribusiness and industrial development. ( Introduction). This book may be as close as you ever want to get to the old Neugent place, but Mamie and Lee and Frog and Coon and Turtle and Nubby will stay with you. (Jonathan Williams, Afterword).A tour de force that is an important social document and contemporary-art statement, as well as a moving respectful and decidedly unsetimental depiction of a vanishing way of rural American life (Tom Patterson. Book excerpt: A sweeping chronicle of Jewish life in the Tar Heel State from colonial times to the present, this beautifully illustrated volume incorporates oral histories, original historical documents, and profiles of fascinating individuals. The first comprehensive social history of its kind, Down Home demonstrates that the story of North Carolina Jews is attuned to the national story of immigrant acculturation but has a southern twist. Keeping in mind the larger southern, American, and Jewish contexts, Leonard Rogoff considers how the North Carolina Jewish experience differs from that of Jews in other southern states. He explores how Jews very often settled in North Carolina's small towns, rather than in its large cities, and he documents the reach and vitality of Jewish North Carolinians' participation in building the New South and the Sunbelt. Many North Carolina Jews were among those at the forefront of a changing South, Rogoff argues, and their experiences challenge stereotypes of a society that was agrarian and Protestant. More than 125 historic and contemporary photographs complement Rogoff's engaging epic, providing a visual panorama of Jewish social, cultural, economic, and religious life in North Carolina. This volume is a treasure to share and to keep. Published in association with the Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina, Down Home is part of a larger documentary project of the same name that will include a film and a traveling museum exhibition, to be launched in June 2010.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governor Alexander Martin of North Carolina was one of the most important figures in the colonial and early state history of North Carolina. A 1756 graduate of Princeton, he was the first president of the Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina. He served longer as governor of the state than any other person until the election of Luther Hodges in the 20th century. He was conferred an honorary doctorate by Princeton and elected to membership in the American Philosophical Society while he was a U.S. senator. While in the Senate, he fought successfully to open the Senate to the public. He was one of five North Carolina delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. He was a friend and protector of the Moravians and other non-conformists. He was the most powerful and effective leader from the frontier region of North Carolina for a quarter of a century. The first chapters of this biography discuss Martin's parents and their high regard for education, his time at Princeton, and his arrival in North Carolina in 1760. The next chapters explore Martin's and Rev. David Caldwell's effort to prevent bloodshed during Governor Tryon's confrontation with the Regulators that led up to the Battle of Alamance, Martin's experiences in the war as second in command of the North Carolina Regiment, his election as senator from Guilford County to the General Assembly in 1777, and his much-celebrated election as governor in 1781. The final three chapters of the book include information about his years in the U.S. Senate, his retirement at his home "Danbury" in Rockingham, North Carolina, his relationship with his family and his very detailed last will and testament. His home, "Danbury," later gave its name to Danbury, North Carolina, in Stokes County, which his nephews helped found about 1848, long after his death.

Each chapter consists of an interpretive essay on a specific aspect of North Carolina's history, a collection of supporting documents, and a brief bibliography. Selections cover historical periods ranging from Elizabethan to contemporary times and examine such issues as slavery, populism, civil rights, and the status of women. Essays address the tragedy of North Carolina's Indians, the state's role in the Revolutionary War and the Confederacy, and the impact of the Great Depression. North Carolina's place in the New South and evangelical culture in the state are also discussed. Designed as a supplementary reader for the study and teaching of North Carolina history, The North Carolina Experience will introduce college students to the process of historical research and writing. It will also be a valuable resource in secondary schools, public libraries, and the homes of those interested in North Carolina history.
