Book excerpt: A fundamental study of the rocking and overturning response of massive concrete blocks (with relatively high aspect ratio) to simultaneous horizontal and vertical earthquake ground motions is presented. This problem occurs when large concrete blocks are used as radiation shields in particle accelerators or similar nuclear installations. The results of this study also offer insight into the response of the rigid bodies (such as are approximated by some electrical machinery and mechanical equipment) which are not anchored to the ground. The mathematical model used was based on the assumption of a constant coefficient of restitution. A computer program was written to predict the rocking and overturning behavior of rigid rectangular blocks under simultaneously applied horizontal and vertical ground accelerations. Using the computer program, the response of rigid blocks of various aspect ratios and sizes was studied under the accelerograms of various strong motion earthquakes.

Book excerpt: This eBook is the second in a series of books on the critical earthquake response of elastic-plastic structures or rigid blocks under near-fault ground motions, and includes four original research papers which were published in the specialty section Earthquake Engineering in ‘Frontiers in Built Environment’. Several extensions of the first book1 are included here. The first article is on the soil-structure interaction problem. The reduction of an original soil-structure interaction model into a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) model enables the application of the original theory for an SDOF model to such complicated soil-structure interaction model. The second article is concerned with the extension of the original theory for an SDOF model to a 2DOF model. Since the simple application of the original theory for an SDOF model to a multi-degree-of-freedom model is difficult due to out-of-phase phenomenon of multiple masses, a convex model theory is introduced and an upper bound of elastic-plastic response is derived. The third article is related to the stability problem of structures (collapse problems of structures) in which the P-delta effect is included. It is shown that the original theory for an SDOF model with elastic-perfectly plastic restoring-force characteristic can be applied to a model with negative second slope. The fourth article is an application of the energy balance approach to an overturning limit problem of rigid blocks. A closed-form expression of the overturning limit of rigid blocks is derived for the first time after the Housner’s pioneering work in 1963. The approach presented in this book, together with the first book, is an epoch-making accomplishment to open the door for simpler and deeper understanding of structural reliability of built environments in the elastic-plastic and nonlinear range.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rocking response of rigid bodies with rectangular footprint, freely standing on a horizontal rigid plane is studied analytically. Rigid bodies are subjected to simulated single component of horizontal earthquake time histories. The effect of the baseline correction, applied to simulated excitations, on the rocking response is first examined. The sensitiveness of rocking motion to the details of simulated earthquakes and the geometric properties of rigid bodies (i.e., slenderness ratio and sizeparameter) as well as the coefficient of restitution is investigated. Because of the demonstrated sensitivity of rocking response of rigid bodies to these factors, prediction of rocking stability must be made in the framework of probability theory. Therefore, using a large number of simulated earthquakes, the effects of duration and shape of intensity function of simulated earthquakes on the overturning probability of rigid bodies are next studied. In the case when a rigid body is placed on any floor of a building, the corresponding overturning probability is compared to that of a body placed on theground. For this purpose, several shear frames with fundamental natural period of vibration ranging from 0.5 sec(stiff) to 2.0 sec (flexible) are employed. Finally, the viability of the energy balance equation which was introduced by Housner in 1963 (The behavior of inverted pendulum structures during earthquakes, Bulletin of Seismological Society of America, 53, 2, 403-417) and widely used by the nuclear power industry to estimate the rocking stability of rigid bodies is evaluated.

Book excerpt: IBERGRID 2008 is the second edition of a series of Iberian Grid Infrastructure Conferences initiated in 2007 under the framework of the bilateral agreement for Science and Technology signed in November 2003 between Portugal and Spain, aiming to leverage the construction of a common Iberian Grid Infrastructure and to foster cooperation in the fields of grid computing and supercomputing. This book is the final outcome of IBERGRID 2008 - The 2nd Iberian Grid Infrastructure Conference. It is aimed at an audience of academics, researchers, students, industry specialists and practitioners in all branches of knowledge sharing a common need, that is, powerful computing, visualization and/or storage resources. This community will benefit from the Iberian Grid Infrastructure being implemented as it will provide easy and secure access to a larger and more powerful set of distributed resources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes an investigation into the dynamic response of structures that are permitted to rock or uplift when subjected to ground excitations. Previous studies have demonstrated that rocking motion can mitigate undesirable seismic actions on structures, and this has been further confirmed through extensive numerical time integration analyses in the present study. Despite the intuitive nature of rocking motion, it has been shown that the underlying process is in fact highly complex, sensitive to initial conditions, consequently history dependent and by no means well understood. The present work aims to contribute to the current understanding of the fundamental mechanics of rocking systems. With the aid of experimental data, the dynamic response of free rocking rigid blocks, controlled rocking systems and simple rocking structures was closely examined. It was found that Housner's simple rocking model remains the most theoretically consistent and is the simplest model to implement. The result is also generally satisfactory for modelling rigid rocking blocks, apart from the model's inability to correctly predict energy dissipation at impacts. The migration of the rotation centre during rocking was identified as central to understand the dynamic characteristics of a controlled rocking system (an elastically restrained rocking system). A novel approach was proposed to describe the rotation centre's migration behaviour. Then by considering the energy content of the system, the pseudo-static force-displacement behaviour of a controlled rocking wall was able to be accurately predicted. This was then successfully extended to predict the timehistory response of controlled rocking systems. Finally, new formulations were developed for predicting the time-history response of three idealised rocking structural systems from first principles. These were validated against published shake table tests results. Two of the highlights arising from these formulations were 1) a set of simplified, closed form formulae which precisely predicted the nonlinear static force-displacement relationship of a rigid rocking structure on flexible ground, and 2) the governing differential equations for a flexible structure rocking on rigid ground. This latter outcome provided users with a valuable quantitative tool for assessing the benefit of implementing a rocking isolation solution.
