Book excerpt: Lou Gramm rose from humble, working-class roots in Rochester, New York, to become one of rock's most popular and distinctive voices in the 1970s and '80s, singing and cowriting more than a dozen hits with the band Foreigner. Songs such as "Cold As Ice," "I Want to Know What Love Is," "Waiting for a Girl Like You," "Double Vision," "Urgent," and "Midnight Blue" are among 20 Gramm songs that achieved Top 40 status on the Billboard charts and became rock classics still played often, nearly three decades after they first hit the airwaves and the record store shelves. "Juke Box Hero: The My Five Decades in Rock 'n' Roll" chronicles, with remarkable candor, the ups and downs of this popular rocker's amazing life--a life which saw him achieve worldwide fame and fortune, then succumb to its trappings before summoning the courage and faith to overcome his drug addiction and a life-threatening brain tumor. Gramm takes the reader behind the scenes--into the recording studio, back stage, on the bus trips and beyond--to give an insider's look into the life of the man "Rolling Stone" magazine referred to as "the Pavarotti of rock."

Moments later, she falls into the book and lands in an earlier time. Relieved that her beloved crystal medallion is still around her neck, she notices an ancient ship anchored nearby. After the captain and his family convince Mary that she must be there for some reason, she boards the ship crewed by talking monkeys. After they set sail, they discover an island, decide to explore, and become stuck in thick ice. After they summon help from an old hermit, they finally break free—only to be captured by pirates who take them to their volcanic island hideaway. As Mary and the others are being prepared for ritual sacrifice to their captors’ evil god, they escape with assistance from animals. But what Mary does not know is that her adventures are just beginning, and that her necklace is there to help her. Will she ever find her way back home, and who will inherit the necklace next? Mayhem and Monkeyshines is an exciting tale of adventure as a twelve-year-old girl and others time travel into a fictional world with more questions than answers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Britain during the late 1970s and early 1980s, a new phenomenon emerged, with female guitarists, bass-players, keyboard-players and drummers playing in bands. Before this time, women's presence in rock bands, with a few notable exceptions, had always been as vocalists. This sudden influx of female musicians into the male domain of rock music was brought about partly by the enabling ethic of punk rock ('anybody can do it!') and partly by the impact of the Equal Opportunities Act. But just as suddenly as the phenomenon arrived, the interest in these musicians evaporated and other priorities became important to music audiences. Helen Reddington investigates the social and commercial reasons for how these women became lost from the rock music record, and rewrites this period in history in the context of other periods when female musicians have been visible in previously male environments. Reddington draws on her own experience as bass-player in a punk band, thereby contributing a fresh perspective on the socio-political context of the punk scene and its relationship with the media. The book also features a wealth of original interview material with key protagonists, including the late John Peel, Geoff Travis, The Raincoats and the Poison Girls.

Book excerpt: Traditionally, privacy studies have focused on the liberal democratic societies of the global West, whereas non-democratic contexts have played a marginal role in the discussion of the private and public spheres, not in the least because of the political stances of the Cold War era. This volume offers explorations of highly diversified performances and discourses of privacy by various actors which were embedded into the culturally, economically, and politically specific constructions of late socialism in individual states of the Warsaw Pact. While the experience of socialism varied across the Bloc, there were also some reactions to socialism and some reverse responses of socialist regimes to these reactions that one can trace through all states. Contributions to this volume take us across the Eastern Bloc and beyond it—from the Soviet Union, into late socialist Poland, Romania, and East and West Germany. While looking at specific countries, they provide a glimpse into a broader perspective that reaches beyond the borders of individual late socialist states. Together, these articles document a palette of paradigms of the construction and transformation of the private spheres that overcame the national borders of individual states and left an imprint across the Eastern Bloc, thereby contributing to rethinking Cold War rhetoric in regard to these states.

Book excerpt: The Rock Music Imagination is an exploration of rock artists in their social and artistic contexts, particularly between 1964 and 1980, and of rock music in relation to literature, that is, creative expression, fantastic imagination, and contemporary fiction about rock. Robert McParland analyzes how rock music touches our imaginative lives by looking at themes that appear in classic rock music: freedom and liberation, utopia and dystopia, community, rebellion, the outsider, the quest for transcendence, monstrosity, erotic and spiritual love, imaginative vision, and mystery. The Rock Music Imagination explores blues imagination, countercultural dreams of utopia, rock’s critiques of society and images of dystopia, rock’s inheritance from romanticism, science fiction and mythic imagination in progressive rock, and rock’s global reach and potential to provide hope and humanitarian assistance.

Book excerpt: The book is the true story of one pioneer families' journey to Oregon and the establishment of a homestead ranch near Auburn, Oregon; site of the famed 1861 Gold Strike by Henry Griffin. This novel details the actual accounts of the Haskell family in their struggle to survive their new life in Eastern Oregon. This narrative details a long running feud between the patriarch, Monroe Galusha Haskell, and his oldest son, Charlie Haskell. Monroe was secure in his supreme wisdom that ranching was Charlie's destiny. But he locked horns endlessly with his son whose independent spirit and high roller faith convinced him that he'd find his destiny in becoming the owner of a Gold Mine. Historic accounts of cattle rustling, crippling droughts, hard drinking, deadly blizzards, murders and lynchings, the sudden deaths of five family members, a traumatic accident that leaves a daughter with bouts of temporary insanity and a grudge against chickens, and finally two grandsons who enlist in World War One. The youngest sees action in the biggest battles with American General Blackjack Pershing and pays dearly for it. At times sad and then humorous these tales define what it is about us as people that makes us most interesting; our virtues and flaws; in short, our humanity.
