Book excerpt: I'm Tyler Lindsey, and until recently, I had an okay apartment, an okay girlfriend, and an okay job as a bellboy at a respectable Boston hotel. Then rock star Chris Raiden died right before I brought his room service -- stiffing me on the tip, by the way -- and my life went to hell. My fifteen minutes of fame was more like five seconds, and my girlfriend left me in disgust. But even worse -- Chris is haunting me. Not the room where he died, like a normal ghost. No, somehow he's stuck to me and is insisting on taking care of a bunch of unfinished business in California. So now I have to traipse across the country with the world's most narcissistic ghost. But . . . I keep having these weird thoughts. Thoughts about how much I like the way he makes me laugh. Thoughts where I kind of want to kiss the emo-narcissist, even though he's a ghost and an asshole and I can't touch him anyway. And even if I could, what will happen when he finishes his business and nothing's keeping him here anymore?

Book excerpt: With the school talent show coming up, a young music lover spends most of her time daydreaming about the perfect act. She notices the sounds around her, like the brrrrring of the school bell or the rappa-tappa-tap of rain on the windowpane. But the talent show is the place to reveal her own voice. Will she mix up some hip-hop beats? Will she command an orchestra of dozens, bringing the classics to life? Or, will she go electric, Jimi Hendrix style? Marching out on the talent show stage to the beat of her own drum, this sweet and sassy musician ultimately chooses to be herself and sing her own song loud and proud, “I’ve got a rock ’n’ roll soul!”

If one goes Googling John Repp; one soon learns that he is a native of the Pine Barrens region of New Jersey (a location that often appears in his work); but has since lived many places; attended many universities (picking up an MFA along the way); has worked at seemingly every sort of job from gravedigging to teaching creative writing (so at least some of them useful); and has an eclectic and eccentric list of interests. And that he has; over the past forty years; written many books of poetry and prose; garnering awards and critical recognition along the way. All of which finds its way into THE SOUL OF ROCK & ROLL; which serves as a âeoegreatest hitsâe selection from those four decades of poetry. Such an outsized life has yielded a commensurately wide-ranging body of work; and any attempt to gist it in few words would do it poor service; but a good point of entry is "The Tiny-Montgomery-Mother-Poem" in which Dylan's The Basement Tapes plays in the background while Repp's mother is dying; and his family rails at him for speaking of such things: "They say These things are private. Why do you keep / making these private things public? It's so long ago." Yes; he writes of private things; and of things from long ago; from a time of innocence and the rush to lose it; documenting not merely his life but that of his generation; a generation for which rock & roll provided the soundtrack and the thrum sounding throughout these pages; love and loss amid the worn crackle and hiss. It may be true; as William Carlos Williams observed; that it is hard to get news from poetry; but it's a good source of history; of understanding how we arrived where we are. Repp reports in one poem here that he learned of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire in part from a Robert Pinsky poem. Now it is his turn to educate us; to share the lessons from his life and times. Not all may be the sort of things that people die for want of knowing (to complete the Williams quotation); but they can be comforting--and what a needful thing that is for these times. "Who doesn't climb from the mere world" he asks in "Ovaltine"--with the emphasis on mere; lest we take our lives too seriously; reminding us to dream--"to where Ponce de Leon and Wyatt Earp rein their horses / while you spur Silver to column's head? The wind hits you first; / wind unheard before that; nothing ahead but fire and new mountains."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Meaning of Soul, Emily J. Lordi proposes a new understanding of this famously elusive concept. In the 1960s, Lordi argues, soul came to signify a cultural belief in black resilience, which was enacted through musical practices—inventive cover versions, falsetto vocals, ad-libs, and false endings. Through these soul techniques, artists such as Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway, Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, Isaac Hayes, and Minnie Riperton performed virtuosic survivorship and thus helped to galvanize black communities in an era of peril and promise. Their soul legacies were later reanimated by such stars as Prince, Solange Knowles, and Flying Lotus. Breaking with prior understandings of soul as a vague masculinist political formation tethered to the Black Power movement, Lordi offers a vision of soul that foregrounds the intricacies of musical craft, the complex personal and social meanings of the music, the dynamic movement of soul across time, and the leading role played by black women in this musical-intellectual tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drooling fanatic, n. 1. One who drools in the presence of beloved rock stars. 2. Any of a genus of rock-and-roll wannabes/geeks who walk around with songs constantly ringing in their ears, own more than 3,000 albums, and fall in love with at least one record per week. With a life that’s spanned the phonographic era and the digital age, Steve Almond lives to Rawk. Like you, he’s secretly longed to live the life of a rock star, complete with insane talent, famous friends, and hotel rooms to be trashed. Also like you, he’s content (sort of) to live the life of a rabid fan, one who has converted his unrequited desires into a (sort of) noble obsession. Rock and Roll Will Save Your Life traces Almond’s passion from his earliest (and most wretched) rock criticism to his eventual discovery of a music-crazed soul mate and their subsequent production of two little superfans. Along the way, Almond reflects on the delusional power of songs, the awkward mating habits of drooling fanatics, and why Depression Songs actually make us feel so much better. The book also includes: • sometimes drunken interviews with America’s finest songwriters • a recap of the author’s terrifying visit to Graceland while stoned • a vigorous and credibility-shattering endorsement of Styx’s Paradise Theater • recommendations you will often choose to ignore • a reluctant exegesis of the Toto song “Africa” • obnoxious lists sure to piss off rock critics But wait, there’s more. Readers will also be able to listen to a special free mix designed by the author, available online at www.stevenalmond.com, for the express purpose of eliciting your drool. For those about to rock—we salute you!

By 1982, he was a member of Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul, a retro-rock revival act headed by Steven Van Zandt. The Disciples of Soul videos played on MTV during the network's earliest years, making Beauvoir one of the first Black recording artists to cross the start-up music channel's "color line." Beauvoir went on to become a multi-platinum artist, producer, and songwriter. Bet My Soul on Rock 'n' Roll follows his ride through the American music industry, detailing his encounters with rock stars such as Bruce Springsteen, Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, and Lita Ford, as well as the actor Sylvester Stallone, the billionaire executive Richard Branson, and even Donald Trump. Beauvoir also considers the manner in which his Haitian heritage has shaped his public image, his music, and his role as an activist for the dispossessed and the poor. Beauvoir's collaborations—and stories—span genres, including work with KISS, Debbie Harry, Lionel Richie, and the Ramones

Who listened to popular music and why? What was the major impression madeby it on society at large? Why do some types of popular music still matter today? In this richly textured and chronologically organized anthology, well-known scholar David Brackett brings together more than 100 readings from a diverse range of sources and by writers who have played an integral part in the development of popular music criticism. He includes articles frommainstream and specialized magazines, scholarly journals, and newspapers, as well as interviews and autobiographies of musicians and other music industry insiders. Topics covered include the role of race, class conflict, gender roles, regional differences in the reception of popular music, and the relative value of artistry versus commerce.Extensive editorial introductions and headnotes supply context for the selections, provide links between different eras and genres, clarify the issues raised by the documents, and explain their historical significance. Huntsville's recently formed NASA station drew new residents from throughout the country, and across the world, to the Rocket City. This influx of fresh perspectives informed the city's youth. Soon, dozens of vibrant rock bands and soul groups, characteristic of the era but unique in Alabama, were formed. Set against the bitter backdrop of segregation, Huntsville musicians--black and white--found common ground in rock and soul music. Whether playing to desegregated audiences, in desegregated bands or both, Huntsville musicians were boldly moving forward, ushering in a new era. Through interviews with these musicians, local author Jane DeNeefe recounts this unique and important chapter in Huntsville's history.
