Book excerpt: Interference and jamming severely disrupt our ability to communicate by decreasing the effective signal-to-noise ratio and by making parameter estimation difficult at the receiver. The objective of this research work is to design robust wireless systems and algorithms to suppress the adverse effects of non-intentional co-channel interference (CCI) or intentional jamming. In particular, we develop chip-combining schemes with timing, channel, and noise-power estimation techniques, all of which mitigate CCI or jamming. We also exploit the spatial diversity and iterative receiver techniques for this purpose. Most of the existing timing estimation algorithms are robust against either large frequency offsets or CCI, but not against both at the same time. Hence, we develop a new frame boundary estimation method that is robust in the presence of severe co-channel interference and large carrier-frequency offsets. To solve the high peak-to-average-power ratio problem of a multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) system and enhance its robustness against fading and jamming, we propose a constant-envelope MC-CDMA system employing cyclic delay diversity (CDD) as transmit diversity. We analyze the diversity order, coding gain, and bit-error rate upper bound. We also propose a blind, accurate, and computationally efficient signal-to-noise ratio estimator for the proposed system. We propose a configurable robust anti-jam receiver that estimates the frequency- or time-domain jammer state information (JSI) and uses it for chip combining in the corresponding domain. A soft-JSI-based chip-combining technique is proposed that outperforms conventional hard-JSI-based chip combining. We also derive a chip combiner that provides sufficient statistics to the decoder. Channel estimation is necessary for coherent signal detection and JSI estimation. Conversely, knowledge of the jamming signal power and JSI of different subcarriers can improve the accuracy of the channel estimates. Hence, we propose joint iterative estimation of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel coefficients, jamming power, and JSI for a coded MC-CDMA MIMO system operating under jamming and a time-varying frequency-selective fading channel. Finally, we reduce the computational complexity of the JSI-based anti-jam receivers by introducing an expectation-maximization-based joint channel and noise-covariance estimator that does not need either the subcarrier JSI or the individual powers of the AWGN and jamming signal.

Book excerpt: Wireless communications have experienced tremendous growth in the last decade, which has placed significant demand for RF spectrum, leading to spectrum "crunch." Driven by numerous studies that revealed the significant under-utilization of many licensed channels in the VHF and UHF bands, a new paradigm for spectrum sharing has emerged in the past decade. In this paradigm, wireless devices (a.k.a. secondary users) are allowed to operate opportunistically in certain licensed bands without interfering with the licensed users (a.k.a. primary users). The realization of this new communication paradigm necessitates the design of a new generation of smart, adaptable, and programmable radios, called cognitive radios. Enabling opportunistic operation requires addressing various challenges including device coordination, resource allocation, channel monitoring, and various security issues. Specifically, secondary users are particularly vulnerable to node compromise and malicious jamming attacks. In this dissertation, we first develop several rendezvous algorithms for establishing unicast as well as multicast communication links in opportunistic spectrum access networks. The developed rendezvous algorithms are shown to be robust to node compromise attacks. Second, we study the anti-jamming rendezvous problem in the presence of an insider attack. We develop a combinatorial game-theoretic framework to capture the interactions between the rendezvousing nodes and the insider jammer. Third, to account for the dynamism of primary users, we propose novel stochastic resource allocation schemes under channel-quality uncertainty. The proposed schemes support channel bonding and aggregation and account for adjacent channel interference by introducing guard-bands. Fourth, to prevent interference with primary users, we design an optimal spectrum-sensing algorithm that achieves high detection accuracy and low false-alarm rate. Finally, we present an application of using cognitive radios for jamming mitigation in satellite communications. Extensive simulations are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithms.

Multiobjective formulation is used with noncooperative and cooperative approaches owing to the nature of the problems under consideration. Since intentional Jamming is one of the most severe kinds of interference, anti-jam techniques are crucial for communications in a hostile environment. The jam and anti-jam problem is modeled as a two-person zero-sum game in which the communicator and the jammer have antagonistic objectives and are viewed as the two players. The concept of Nash equilibrium is introduced and its characterizations such as existence, uniqueness, stability, robustness, and sensitivity are investigated. This model is then applied to a frequency-hop spread spectrum M-ary frequency-shift-keying system where ratio-threshold diversity is used to combat partial-band noise and multitone jamming. Equilibrium performance in terms of cutoff rate and bit error rate is shown to be superior to that predicted by worst-case analysis. When mutual interference caused by simultaneous transmissions is the major concern in a heterogeneous packet network, a multiobjective framework is proposed in this dissertation with the objectives and constraints of the individual users taken into consideration. Near-far effect and Rayleigh fading may occasion packet capture and therefore create unfairness in favor of closer users. Thus, multiobjective optimality is introduced, in which criterion of fairness is embedded. Optimum strategies controlling transmission probability and/or power are examined to yield the Pareto optimal solution in a slotted ALOHA network. Then, the same control strategies are studied with the channel utilization being the maximization objective. Optimization results are obtained in various situations, and effectiveness of different strategies is compared. A multimedia direct-sequence spread spectrum system may support multiple services with different transmission rates and diverse quality-of-service requirements. To facilitate multimedia applications and maximize the system capacity, average power control, error correction coding, and time diversity are incorporated into the system. The capacity of such a system is evaluated in multipath Rayleigh fading channels. Average bit error rate, outage probability, and corresponding information theoretic bounds are discussed. Concatenation of Reed-Solomon codes and convolutional codes is considered for error correction to account for different quality and delay constraints. It is shown through a numerical example that the system capacity can be increased significantly by an appropriate system design.

Frequency hopping (FH) is widely used for radio transmission in such networks due to its low probability of detection/interception. With the increasing deployment, multiple networks occupying overlapping frequency bands are likely to coexist in a physical environment, especially in tactical operations, emergency situations, or dense-populated areas. Consequently co-channel interference due to frequency collisions can become a major performance limiting factor. In this project, we developed a novel interference mitigation technique based on multidimensional frequency estimation coupled with the expectation-maximization principle, which effectively resolves collisions among non-collaborative networks, thus enabling robust coexistence of multiple FH networks. To deal with possible receiver-transmitter mismatch, we also designed a low-complexity model order variation detection method. Novel multidimensional frequency estimation algorithms are also investigated.

Therefore this study explores visible light communication as one of the emerging technologies to help meet up with these challenges. The Visible Light Communication (VLC) refers to the communication technology which utilizes the visible light source as a signal transmitter, the air as a transmission medium, and the appropriate photodiode as a signal receiving component. This study appraises the extant literature on Solid State Lighting (SSL), with emphasis on Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). The study highlights the weaknesses of the existing system, the advantages and the significance of the new system using prototype methodology. The study focused on the design and implementation of Visible Light Communication (VLC) circuit for wireless data transmission by designing an analog circuit to integrate with a computer or mobile phone, and then sending some form of data using visible light LEDs from a transmitter, and decoding it with a receiver. The design adopted Beagle-Bone-Black (BBB) as development platform and the circuit was tested with Proteus 8 Professional and data sent reliably and accurately over a short distance at a fair speed which ensures that the initial goals for the functionality of this new system which includes being able to send audio, text or pictures over a distance of approximately 10 meter at a data rate of at least 10 Mbps was achieved. The study shows that visible light communication has the potential to provide high speed data communication with improved energy efficiency and communication security/privacy due to its unique characteristics and advantages. Also, Visible Light Communication can complement the RF-based mobile communication systems in designing high-capacity mobile data networks and can be incorporated in the next generation 5G network. The study therefore recommends error control mechanism and Dimming Support to be integrated in the subsequent studies.
