Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have obtained a number of results pertaining th image compression, robust estimation, and robust signal detection. All of this work has admitted the presence of data whose statistics are imperfectly known. Our results have featured adaptivity, flexibility, and nontraditional approaches. In order to employ more realistic statistical models, we have directed our research to admit nonstationarity and dependency. Much of our work in robust estimation admit nonstationarity and dependency. Much of our work in robust estimation and detection has employed a geometric approach which we have originated in past research. Our geometric techniques provide a quantitive way to measure the degree of robustness, thus offering the designer more flexibility in the meeting the performance/robustness, needs of the user. Our most recent results have resulted in the admission of essentially arbitrary dependent data, thus leading the a number of important conclusions pertaining to signal detection and the estimation of a random variable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a decade ago, world-renowned control systems authority Frank L. Lewis introduced what would become a standard textbook on estimation, under the title Optimal Estimation, used in top universities throughout the world. The time has come for a new edition of this classic text, and Lewis enlisted the aid of two accomplished experts to bring the book completely up to date with the estimation methods driving today's high-performance systems. A Classic Revisited Optimal and Robust Estimation: With an Introduction to Stochastic Control Theory, Second Edition reflects new developments in estimation theory and design techniques. As the title suggests, the major feature of this edition is the inclusion of robust methods. Three new chapters cover the robust Kalman filter, H-infinity filtering, and H-infinity filtering of discrete-time systems. Modern Tools for Tomorrow's Engineers This text overflows with examples that highlight practical applications of the theory and concepts. Design algorithms appear conveniently in tables, allowing students quick reference, easy implementation into software, and intuitive comparisons for selecting the best algorithm for a given application. In addition, downloadable MATLABĀ® code allows students to gain hands-on experience with industry-standard software tools for a wide variety of applications. This cutting-edge and highly interactive text makes teaching, and learning, estimation methods easier and more modern than ever.

A novel method known as polynomial rooting approach is proposed to obtain estimates of frequencies, amplitudes and noise variance of two-dimensional exponential signals. The consistency and asymptotic normality of the least squares estimators in a multidimensional exponential signal model are established. Significant contributions have been made to the design of observations, efficient estimation of target positions almost continuously in time and establishing correct association between estimates of target positions made at different time points. M-estimation. A unified theory of robust estimation is developed using the difference of two convex functions as the discrepancy measure. Quantile regression. The concept of a quantile regression function is introduced as the conditional mean of the response variable at the u-th quantile of the independent variable and applied to problems of inference when the independent variable in different samples are not comparable.

Book excerpt: An introduction to the theory and methods of robust statistics, providing students with practical methods for carrying out robust procedures in a variety of statistical contexts and explaining the advantages of these procedures. In addition, the text develops techniques and concepts likely to be useful in the future analysis of new statistical models and procedures. Emphasizing the concepts of breakdown point and influence functon of an estimator, it demonstrates the technique of expressing an estimator as a descriptive measure from which its influence function can be derived and then used to explore the efficiency and robustness properties of the estimator. Mathematical techniques are complemented by computational algorithms and Minitab macros for finding bootstrap and influence function estimates of standard errors of the estimators, robust confidence intervals, robust regression estimates and their standard errors. Includes examples and problems.

Book excerpt: The 3D point cloud is a widely used data format obtained from scanning a 3D model, either by using active 3D laser range scanners or passive photogrammetric methods. Since the topological information in a point cloud is captured on 3D point level, the inverse design cannot be carried out directly on the data. The point cloud is first segmented into various geometric primitives, such as planes, spheres and cylinders, then the modification and redesign of solid model can be more easily achieved. A robust estimator is required to detect the multiple inlier structures while filtering out the outliers. In this dissertation, we present a new robust algorithm which processes each structure independently. The user gives only the number of elemental subsets for random sampling, which is also required in other robust algorithms. This method provides a general solution of robust estimation, and no tuning of other parameters are required for particular estimation tasks. The scales of the structures (tolerance of error) are estimated adaptively and no threshold is involved in spite of different objective functions. After classifying all the input data, the segmented structures are sorted by their strengths and the strongest inlier structures come out at the top. Like any robust estimators, this algorithm also has limitations which are described in detail. To illustrate its efficiency and robustness, the algorithm is tested on various synthetic and real examples in both 2D and 3D. We extend its applications through the entire process of the structure from motion method, to reconstruct the 3D point cloud from a sequence of 2D images. We automatically estimate and fit the 3D surfaces from the 3D point samples, without generating surface normals or mesh model. The designer can interact with the 3D points conveniently and direct modification of point cloud becomes applicable.

Book excerpt: This international conference on "Advances in Communications and Control Systems" was held to bring together researchers in communications, control systems, computing and signal processing to explore common themes and present research results of broad interest. The focus of the conference was on presenting research results in a fashion that would make them accessible to groups wider than that of the narrow specialist. Many papers, therefore, are of a type that might be termed survey/research. The topics include control theory, communication detection, high speed computing, distributed parameter systems, nonlinear systems, stochastic optimization, source coding, robust control and applications, and neural networks. Selected papers from the conference are presented both in this book and in its companion volume Advances in Computing and Control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robust statistics is an extension of classical statistics that specifically takes into account the concept that the underlying models used to describe data are only approximate. Its basic philosophy is to produce statistical procedures which are stable when the data do not exactly match the postulated models as it is the case for example with outliers. Robust Methods in Biostatistics proposes robust alternatives to common methods used in statistics in general and in biostatistics in particular and illustrates their use on many biomedical datasets. The methods introduced include robust estimation, testing, model selection, model check and diagnostics. They are developed for the following general classes of models: Linear regression Generalized linear models Linear mixed models Marginal longitudinal data models Cox survival analysis model The methods are introduced both at a theoretical and applied level within the framework of each general class of models, with a particular emphasis put on practical data analysis. This book is of particular use for research students, applied statisticians and practitioners in the health field interested in more stable statistical techniques. An accompanying website provides R code for computing all of the methods described, as well as for analyzing all the datasets used in the book.

The author analyses the existence conditions for the nonlinear observer-based FD systems to gain a deeper insight into the construction of FD systems. Aided by the T-S fuzzy technique, she recommends different design schemes, among them the L_inf/L_2 type of FD systems. The derived FD and FTC approaches are verified by two benchmark processes.
