Despite a large number of standards and commercial products for applications of visual communications, providing high quality visual information over resource-limited wireless networks still remains a major challenge. This is because of the huge data size of visual information and the complicated characteristics of wireless channels. Due to the limited bandwidth of wireless channels, it is desired that visual information is compressed by highly efficient compression schemes while, due to the time-varying error prone environments of wireless channels, controlled redundancy is necessary to be added in the compressed bitstreams in order to ensure reliable transmissions. Therefore, there is a tradeoff between efficiency and reliability. The objective of this research is to find the optimal tradeoff between efficiency and reliability for image and video transmission over wireless channels. In this dissertation, several image and video transmission systems are developed based on robust error control and optimal bit allocation. For image transmission, two systems are developed, namely, TCQ-based error-resilient coding and robust joint source-channel coding (RJSCC). In the TCQ-based error-resilient coding, DCT-transformed blocks are classified and bits are optimally allocated among different classes and different coefficients according to their importance and sensitivity to the channel noise. In RJSCC, in addition to the bit allocation in source coding, we also consider the bit allocation between source coding and channel coding. We develop an end-to-end rate-distortion (R-D) function, which incorporates both transition probability and bit error rate of a bursty channel model. Based on the R-D function, bits can be allocated in such a way that we are able to achieve an optimum tradeoff between source coding accuracy and channel error protection under a fixed bandwidth limitation. As a result, RJSCC is among the best wireless image transmission systems reported in the literature. The study for wireless image transmission leads to our research in wireless video transmission. We propose a novel pre-interleaving scheme for video streaming over bursty loss channels. The pre-interleaving scheme is able to generate the desired error patterns for video source decoding while still preserving the features of the conventional combination of channel decoding and interleaving. The pre-interleaving scheme can be applied to any standard video codecs and to both wireless channels and packet-loss channels. Finally, we show the extensive study on the rate controls in wireless video streaming systems. The study includes three aspects: the rate control for off line video coding, the rate control for rate-reduction transcoding and the rate control for adaptive wireless video streaming. We propose a rate control scheme which is able to optimally allocate bits among video frames. We demonstrate that the proposed rate control scheme can provide better quality than that of the state-of-the-art H.263 standard.

Book excerpt: This book deals with the problem of joint source-channel video transmission, i.e., the joint optimal allocation of resources at the application layer and the other network layers, such as data rate adaptation, channel coding, power adaptation in wireless networks, quality of service (QoS) support from the network, and packet scheduling, for efficient video transmission. Real-time video communication applications, such as videoconferencing, video telephony, and on-demand video streaming, have gained increased popularity. However, a key problem in video transmission over the existing Internet and wireless networks is the incompatibility between the nature of the network conditions and the QoS requirements (in terms, for example, of bandwidth, delay, and packet loss) of real-time video applications. To deal with this incompatibility, a natural approach is to adapt the end-system to the network. The joint source-channel coding approach aims to efficiently perform content-aware cross-layer resource allocation, thus increasing the communication efficiency of multiple network layers. Our purpose in this book is to review the basic elements of the state-of-the-art approaches toward joint source-channel video transmission for wired and wireless systems. In this book, we present a general resource-distortion optimization framework, which is used throughout the book to guide our discussions on various techniques of joint source-channel video transmission. In this framework, network resources from multiple layers are assigned to each video packet according to its level of importance. It provides not only an optimization benchmark against which the performance of other sub-optimal systems can be evaluated, but also a useful tool for assessing the effectiveness of different error control components in practical system design. This book is therefore written to be accessible to researchers, expert industrial R&D engineers, and university students who are interested in the cutting edge technologies in joint source-channel video transmission. Book excerpt: Scalable image and video has been proposed to transmit image and video signals over lossy networks, such as the Internet and wireless networks. However, scalability alone is not a complete solution since there is a conflict between the unequal importance of the scalable bit stream and the agnostic nature of packet losses in the network. This thesis investigates three methods to combat the detrimental effects of random packet losses to scalable images and video, namely the error resilient method, the error concealment method, and the unequal error protection method within the joint source-channel coding framework. For the error resilient method, an optimal bit allocation algorithm is proposed without considering the distortion caused by packet losses. The allocation algorithm is then extended to accommodate packet losses. For the error concealment method, a simple temporal error concealment mechanism is designed to work for video signals. For the unequal error protection method, the optimal protection allocation problem is formulated and solved. These methods are tested on the wavelet-based Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees(SPIHT) scalable image coder. Performance gains and losses in lossy and lossless environments are studied for both the original coder and the error-controlled coders. The results show performance advantages of all three methods over the original SPIHT coder. Particularly, the unequal error protection method and error concealment method are promising for future Internet/wireless image and video transmission, because the former has very good performance even at heavy packet loss (a PSNR of 22.00 dB has been seen at nearly 60% packet loss) and the latter does not introduce any extra overhead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we transmit multimedia through wireless channels, we need to protect source bits from channel noise. However, due to the constraints on the channel resources, source and channel bits should share the resources optimally in the sense of distortion or throughput. That is, the problem is how to allocate channel resources such as the bandwidth, diversity, or transmit power to the source and channel under system constraints. In addition, due to the unequal priority of source packets, performance can be improved by assigning unequal channel resources to the packets based on their priority. In this dissertation, we introduce an information-theoretic framework which allows us to analyze the system performance mathematically with unequal allocation of the channel resources with respect to the unequal priority of the source packets. By applying the information theoretic framework, an algorithm to find the throughput-optimal unequal error protection (UEP) is derived. The first example to apply this framework is the progressive image transmission over block fading channels with relay-assisted distributed spatial diversity. Assuming a progressive image coder with a constraint on the transmission bandwidth, we formulate a joint source-channel rate allocation scheme that maximizes the expected source throughput. Specifically, using Gaussian as well as BPSK inputs on at Rayleigh fading channels, we lower bound the average packet error rate by the corresponding mutual information outage probability, and derive the average throughput expression as a function of channel code rates as well as channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for a frequency-division multiplexing-based system both without relaying and with a half-duplex relay using a decode-and-forward protocol. At high SNR, the optimization problem involves a convex function of the channel code rates, and we show that a known recursive algorithm can be used to predict the performance of both systems. The second example is the layered transmission of a Gaussian source over multiple relays using superposition coding. At first, we analyze the outage probability and performance in terms of average throughput and distortion for decodeand-forward (DF) protocols with single-layer and superposed two-layer coding. For the superposition coding approach, we consider different power allocations to the base and enhancement layers. Then, we propose a simple protocol which assigns a pre-determined number of relays to individual layers instead of repeating the superposition coded packet at the relay. We also present numerical results based on the analysis to compare the performance. We then consider a practical application where motion compensated fine granular scalable (MC-FGS) video is transmitted over multi-input multi-output (MIMO) wireless channels and the leaky and partial prediction schemes are applied in the enhancement layer of MC-FGS video to exploit the tradeoff between error propagation and coding efficiency. For reliable transmission, we propose UEP by considering a tradeoff between reliability and data rates, which is controlled by forward error correction (FEC) and MIMO mode selection to minimize the average distortion. In a high Doppler environment where it is hard to get an accurate channel estimate, we investigate the performance of the proposed MC-FGS video transmission scheme with joint control of both the leaky and partial prediction parameters and the UEP. In a slow fading channel where the channel throughput can be estimated at the transmitter, adaptive control of the prediction parameters is considered.

The inherent vulnerability of compressed video to transmission errors and the time varying and fading environments of the wireless channel combined with network and application constrains presents some major technological issues that needs to be addressed. To improve the error resiliency and efficiency of transmitting video over wireless channels. Several techniques are developed that contribute to better utilize the error resilient features available in H.264 and propose enhancements to the frame layer rate control. Firstly, new techniques on how to use explicit Flexible Macroblock Ordering (FMO) more effectively in wireless video ransmission by using combined spatial and temporal indicators of macroblock (MB) importance to generate slice group maps for H.264. Secondly, an improved sorting algorithm that classifies macroblocks into different slice groups for FMO in H.264 that further improves the use of explicit FMO. Thirdly, enhancements to the H.264 frame layer rate control is proposed, that takes into consideration the effects of using FMO for video transmission, to better manage bit allocation and improve coding efficiency. We propose a new header bits model, an enhanced frame complexity measure, a bit allocation and a quantization parameter (QP) adjustment scheme. Lastly, a framework for adaptive FMO selection scheme based on feedback information is presented. In summary, in this dissertation we propose the framework of using explicit FMO, rate control and feedback information for wireless video transmission. Experimental results show that the proposed techniques are effective in improving the video quality especially for complex video sequences and at low-bit rates.
