Book excerpt: Techniques, suitable for parallel implementation, for robust 2D model-based object recognition in the presence of sensor error are studied. Models and scene data are represented as local geometric features and robust hypothesis of feature matchings and transformations is considered. Bounds on the error in the image feature geometry are assumed constraining possible matchings and transformations. {\it Transformation sampling} is introduced as a simple, robust, polynomial-time, and highly parallel method of searching the space of transformations to hypothesize feature matchings. Key to the approach is that error in image feature measurement is explicitly accounted for. A Connection Machine implementation and experiments on real images are presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and construction of three-dimensional [3-D] object recognition systems has long occupied the attention of many computer vision researchers. The variety of systems that have been developed for this task is evidence both of its strong appeal to researchers and its applicability to modern manufacturing, industrial, military, and consumer environments. 3-D object recognition is of interest to scientists and engineers in several different disciplines due to both a desire to endow computers with robust visual capabilities, and the wide applications which would benefit from mature and robust vision systems. However, 3-D object recognition is a very complex problem, and few systems have been developed for actual production use; most existing systems have been developed for experimental use by researchers only. This edited collection of papers summarizes the state of the art in 3-D object recognition using examples of existing 3-D systems developed by leading researchers in the field. While most chapters describe a complete object recognition system, chapters on biological vision, sensing, and early processing are also included. The volume will serve as a valuable reference source for readers who are involved in implementing model-based object recognition systems, stimulating the cross-fertilisation of ideas in the various domains. The variety of topics on Image Communication is so broad that no one can be a specialist in all the topics, and the whole area is beyond the scope of a single volume, while the requirement of up to date information is ever increasing. This new closed-end book series is intended both as a comprehensive reference for those already active in the area of Image Communication, as well as providing newcomers with a foothold for commencing research. Each volume will comprise a state of the art work on the editor's/author's area of expertise, containing information until now scattered in many journals and proceedings.

Book excerpt: The International Symposium on Experimental Robotics (ISER) is a series of bi-annual meetings, which are organized, in a rotating fashion around North America, Europe and Asia/Oceania. The goal of ISER is to provide a forum for research in robotics that focuses on novelty of theoretical contributions validated by experimental results. The meetings are conceived to bring together, in a small group setting, researchers from around the world who are in the forefront of experimental robotics research. This unique reference presents the latest advances across the various fields of robotics, with ideas that are not only conceived conceptually but also explored experimentally. It collects robotics contributions on the current developments and new directions in the field of experimental robotics, which are based on the papers presented at the 13the ISER held in Québec City, Canada, at the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, on June 18-21, 2012. This present thirteenth edition of Experimental Robotics edited by Jaydev P. Desai, Gregory Dudek, Oussama Khatib, and Vijay Kumar offers a collection of a broad range of topics in field and human-centered robotics.

ICIAR is organized annually, and alternates between Europe and North America. ICIAR 2004 was held in Porto, Portugal. The idea of o?ering these conferences came as a result of discussion between researchers in Portugal and Canada to encourage collaboration and exchange, mainly between these two countries, but also with the open participation of other countries, addressing recent advances in theory, methodology and applications. Book excerpt: One of the grand challenges of artificial intelligence is to enable computers to interpret 3D scenes and objects from imagery. This book organizes and introduces major concepts in 3D scene and object representation and inference from still images, with a focus on recent efforts to fuse models of geometry and perspective with statistical machine learning. The book is organized into three sections: (1) Interpretation of Physical Space; (2) Recognition of 3D Objects; and (3) Integrated 3D Scene Interpretation. The first discusses representations of spatial layout and techniques to interpret physical scenes from images. The second section introduces representations for 3D object categories that account for the intrinsically 3D nature of objects and provide robustness to change in viewpoints. The third section discusses strategies to unite inference of scene geometry and object pose and identity into a coherent scene interpretation. Each section broadly surveys important ideas from cognitive science and artificial intelligence research, organizes and discusses key concepts and techniques from recent work in computer vision, and describes a few sample approaches in detail. Newcomers to computer vision will benefit from introductions to basic concepts, such as single-view geometry and image classification, while experts and novices alike may find inspiration from the book's organization and discussion of the most recent ideas in 3D scene understanding and 3D object recognition. Specific topics include: mathematics of perspective geometry; visual elements of the physical scene, structural 3D scene representations; techniques and features for image and region categorization; historical perspective, computational models, and datasets and machine learning techniques for 3D object recognition; inferences of geometrical attributes of objects, such as size and pose; and probabilistic and feature-passing approaches for contextual reasoning about 3D objects and scenes. Book excerpt: This thesis looks at the problem of large object category recognition for use in robotic systems. While many algorithms exist for object recognition, category recognition remains a challenge within robotics, particularly with the robustness and real-time constraints within robotics. Our system addresses category recognition by treating it as a segmentation problem and using the resulting segments to learn and detect large objects based on their 3D characteristics. The first part of this thesis examines how to efficiently do unsupervised segmentation of an RGB-D image in a way that is consistent across wide viewpoint and scale variance, and creating features from the resulting segments. The second part of this thesis explores how to do robust data association to keep temporally consistent segments between frames. Our higher-level module filters and matches relevant segments to a learned database of categories and outputs a pixel-accurate, labeled object mask. Our system has a run time that is nearly linear with the number of RGB-D samples and we evaluate it in a real-time robotic application.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we first present a contribution to overcome this problem of robustness for the recognition of object instances, then we straightly extend this contribution to the detection and localization of classes of objects. In a first step, we have developed a method inspired by graph matching to address the problem of fast recognition of instances of specific objects in noisy conditions. This method allows to easily combine any types of local features (eg contours, textures ...) less affected by noise than keypoints, while bypassing the normalization problem and without penalizing too much the detection speed. Unlike other methods based on a global rigid transformation, our approach is robust to complex deformations such as those due to perspective or those non-rigid inherent to the model itself (e.g. a face, a flexible magazine). Our experiments on several datasets have showed the relevance of our approach. It is overall slightly less robust to occlusion than existing approaches, but it produces better performances in noisy conditions. In a second step, we have developed an approach for detecting classes of objects in the same spirit as the bag-of-visual-words model. For this we use our cascaded micro-classifiers to recognize visual words more distinctive than the classical words simply based on visual dictionaries. Training is divided into two parts: First, we generate cascades of micro-classifiers for recognizing local parts of the model pictures and then in a second step, we use a classifier to model the decision boundary between images of class and those of non-class. We show that the association of classical visual words (from keypoints patches) and our disctinctive words results in a significant improvement. The computation time is generally quite low, given the structure of the cascades that minimizes the detection time and the form of the classifier is extremely fast to evaluate.
