Book excerpt: Robinson Crusoe is an Englishman from the town of York in the seventeenth century, the youngest son of a merchant of German origin. Encouraged by his father to study law, Crusoe expresses his wish to go to sea instead. His family is against Crusoe going out to sea, and his father explains that it is better to seek a modest, secure life for oneself. Initially, Robinson is committed to obeying his father, but he eventually succumbs to temptation and embarks on a ship bound for London with a friend. When a storm causes the near deaths of Crusoe and his friend, the friend is dissuaded from sea travel, but Crusoe still goes on to set himself up as merchant on a ship leaving London. This trip is financially successful, and Crusoe plans another, leaving his early profits in the care of a friendly widow. The second voyage does not prove as fortunate: the ship is seized by Moorish pirates, and Crusoe is enslaved to a potentate in the North African town of Sallee. While on a fishing expedition, he and a slave boy break free and sail down the African coast. A kindly Portuguese captain picks them up, buys the slave boy from Crusoe, and takes Crusoe to Brazil. In Brazil, Crusoe establishes himself as a plantation owner and soon becomes successful. Eager for slave labor and its economic advantages, he embarks on a slave-gathering expedition to West Africa but ends up shipwrecked off of the coast of Trinidad...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robinson Crusoe is a novel by Daniel Defoe, first published on 25 April 1719. This first edition credited the work's fictional protagonist Robinson Crusoe as its author, leading many readers to believe he was a real person and the book a travelogue of true incidents. It was published under the considerably longer original title The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been cast on Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'd by Pyrates. Epistolary, confessional, and didactic in form, the book is a fictional autobiography of the title character (whose birth name is Robinson Kreutznaer)-a castaway who spends years on a remote tropical island near Trinidad, encountering cannibals, captives, and mutineers before being rescued. The story is widely perceived to have been influenced by the life of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived for four years on the Pacific island called "Ms a Tierra" (in 1966 its name was changed to Robinson Crusoe Island), Chile. However, other possible sources have been put forward for the text. It is possible, for example, that Defoe was inspired by the Latin or English translations of Ibn Tufail's Hayy ibn Yaqdhan, an earlier novel also set on a desert island. Another source for Defoe's novel may have been Robert Knox's account of his abduction by the King of Ceylon in 1659 in "An Historical Account of the Island Ceylon," Glasgow: James MacLehose and Sons (Publishers to the University), 1911.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “Robinson Crusoe: The Complete Adventures (Unabridged - "The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe" and "The Further Adventures of Robinson Crusoe" in one volume)” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Set in the 17th century, Robinson Crusoe follows the eponymous Robinson Crusoe as he leaves home to make his fortune. After a series of misadventures in Africa, Crusoe is shipwrecked on a desert island for 28 years, forming much of the adventure. Crusoe's life on the island, his encounter with cannibals, and his rescue of shipwrecked Spaniards are highlights of the story. In The further adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Crusoe and Man Friday journey to Europe, then on a trading adventure to India and China. Rather than returning to Europe by ship, Crusoe's last great adventure is an overland journey across China and Siberia. Daniel Defoe (c.1659-1731) was an English writer credited with publishing the first English-language novel, ROBINSON CRUSOE. Born Daniel Foe, he wrote more than 500 works during his life, including novels and political works, and in a variety of subjects.

Book excerpt: The only survivor of a shipwreck during a slaving expedition, plantation-owner Robinson Crusoe is forced to fight for survival on a deserted Caribbean island. At first he curses his fate, but after a religious vision he comes to believe that he has been spared by merciful Providence. Cut off from civilization, he tries to rebuild a life for himself as best he can. It is only when he finds footprints on the island that he realizes he is not alone after all. Crusoe rescues a prisoner from a band of cannibals, and the man becomes his loyal companion. Together Crusoe and Friday deal with everything from cannibals to mutineers as they try to find a way off the island. First published in 1719, this is an unabridged version of English author Daniel Defoe's first novel.
