Book excerpt: Sixteen fresh and funny poems welcome a new batch of robins to the world! Food Fight Jumble, jostle, rumble, squirm; Dad has landed with a worm. Game of tug-of-war begins-- Biggest bossy baby wins. Mama's a skillful architect, constructing a sturdy nest, while Dad's a champion turf defender. And those hatchlings! Such fluffs of plump perfection! Katie Hesterman's vibrant verse celebrates this awesome circle of bird life, as we follow a pair of robin parents from nest-building and egg-laying, to raising their hungry hatchlings, and finally sending off their flying fledglings. Sergio Ruzzier's brilliant, candy-colored art pays tribute to all these stages of a robin's life cycle, reminding us that while robins may be common, they are also extraordinary!

Book excerpt: In this time of ecological crisis, all that is holy calls us into a more intimate partnership with the diverse and beautiful beings of this earth. In Finding Our Way Home, Myke Johnson reflects on her personal journey into such a partnership and offers a guide for others to begin this path. Lyrically expressed, it weaves together lessons from a chamomile flower, a small bird, a copper beech tree, a garden slug, and a forest fern, along with insights from Indigenous philosophy, environmental science, fractal geometry, childhood Catholic mysticism, the prophet Elijah, fairy tales, and permaculture design. This eco-spiritual journey also wrestles with the history of our society's destruction of the natural world, and its roots in the original theft of the land from Indigenous peoples. Exploring the spiritual dimensions of our brokenness, it offers tools to create healing. Finding Our Way Home is a ceremony to remember our essential unity with all of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FOREWORD INDIES Book of the Year Awards — 2017 BRONZE Winner for Cooking In her first cookbook, the acclaimed chef, winner of a 2018 James Beard Award for Best Chef: New York City, shares her favorite cook-at-home recipes, inspired by her year off from professional cooking. Missy Robbins had been on an upward trajectory through the ranks of chefdom, racking up accolades in Chicago at Spiaggia and in New York as the executive chef of A Voce Madison and A Voce Columbus, both of which earned Michelin stars under her leadership. But success in the grueling world of restaurant cooking took a toll, in sacrifices of time, health, and relationships. So in 2013 Robbins hung up the title of executive chef to explore life outside of the restaurant. This book is a result of that year off: A collection of recipes that Robbins created in her tiny West Village kitchen while she rediscovered life outside of the restaurant world. These dishes, organized around essays narrating her year off, will help readers fall in love with cooking again, as Robbins did. In addition to pasta and the Italian-inspired dishes that Robbins is known for, there are her childhood favorites, such as chicken soup with ricotta dumplings, and breakfast, vegetable, and salad recipes, resulting from Robbins’s commitment to healthier eating habits; there is also a chapter of Asian recipes, inspired by a long-wished-for trip to Vietnam and Thailand. Intimate, engaging, and filled with Robbins’s signature thoughtful, ingredient-driven cooking, this cookbook gives readers the secrets to delicious and varied home cooking within a poignant story of self-discovery.

Book excerpt: Three initials before his surname; public school and ‘varsity’ connections; Middlesex player, then captain; England player, then captain; MCC committee man; Test selector. To the average cricket follower of his time R.W.V. Robins (1906-1968) seemed to be a typical ‘big noise’ at Lord’s. But the detail of his life is far more interesting than that. Born the son of a Post Office clerk in working-class Stafford, his family moved to London when he was fourteen. Walter’s mother talked Highgate School into taking him on as a pupil, where he starred in the school’s cricket and football teams. His cricket reputation, underpinned by energy and commitment, got him into Middlesex sides in the summer he left school. His sporting reputation followed him to Cambridge where he was helped by a scholarship seemingly contrived out of thin air. He rewarded his supporters with sporting rather than academic achievements, and then joined the ranks of Sir Julien Cahn’s cricket-playing employees, fitting in football for the Corinthians and the odd appearance in the League. Marriage yielded a job in insurance underwriting, and allowed him to play regular county cricket. His enthusiastic batting, dynamic fielding, and sharply spun leg-breaks brought him representative-match opportunities and eventually Test games. Committee places followed, and his combative but cheerful manner found him friends, including a regular correspondence with Don Bradman, and exasperated enemies, including Enid Blyton. He led Middlesex in the Brylcreem summer of 1947. Brian Rendell here reports on a man who wanted cricket to be as exciting as football.
