Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A radically new cosmological view from a groundbreaking neuroscientist placing the human brain at the center of humanity’s universe Renowned neuroscientist Miguel Nicolelis introduces readers to a revolutionary new theory of how the human brain evolved to become an organic computer without rival in the known universe. Nicolelis undertakes the first attempt to explain the entirety of human history, culture, and civilization based on a series of recently uncovered key principles of brain function. This new cosmology is centered around three fundamental properties of the human brain: its insurmountable malleability to adapt and learn; its exquisite ability to allow multiple individuals to synchronize their minds around a task, goal, or belief; and its incomparable capacity for abstraction. Combining insights from such diverse fields as neuroscience, mathematics, evolution, computer science, physics, history, art, and philosophy, Nicolelis presents a neurobiologically based manifesto for the uniqueness of the human mind and a cautionary tale of the threats that technology poses to present and future generations.

Book Synopsis Democratic Discipline in Learning Communities by : Clifford H. Edwards
Download or read book Democratic Discipline in Learning Communities written by Clifford H. Edwards and published by R&L Education. This book was released on 2011 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes in detail the attributes of learning communities and how these characteristics help students acquire a sense of moral responsibility and commitment to fellow students. Clifford H. Edwards provides an account of how schools fail to satisfy student needs and thus promote discipline problems. Special attention is given to children's need for self-direction and how empowering them can promote more responsible learning involvement. There is also a focus on the factors that motivate learning and those that do not and how teachers can help their students become more intrinsically interested in school learning. Constructivist learning theory is presented as the most accepted explanation of how children learn and how it articulates with the learning community approach to education. The inquiry learning strategy is given as the most effective way to apply constructivist learning theory in classrooms. Appropriate relationships and effective communications are presented as essential components of learning communities and how they accentuate the effectiveness of this learning orientation. Democratic discipline within learning communities is described in detail.

There thus has existed a need for a concise and accessible text that builds a bridge between the two disciplines. To meet this need, the fully updated Second Edition of this straightforward and reader-friendly reference provides readers with a basic link between the science of the brain and the treatment of common mental health disorders. Both comprehensive and easy to follow, this textbook is being used in psychology graduate programs, nurse practitioner training and psychiatry residencies. It is useful for board exam review as well as for the practicing clinician looking to keep pace with the latest advances in neuroscience. The book’s clear and direct language will enhance your understanding of basic neuroscientific concepts underlying commonly encountered disorders, and the effects of brain chemistry on common behaviors. Practical applications, insightful illustrations, and review questions following each chapter help solidify your grasp of neuropathology and its link to mental health disorders and their treatment.

Book Synopsis Gridiron Glory Days by : Robert E. Wilder
Download or read book Gridiron Glory Days written by Robert E. Wilder and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ¿The ball was round, the equpiment was homemade, and the rules were uncertain, but that game the boys were playing on the lawn at Mercer University in 1892 was football....¿ Thus begins this colorful history of football at Mercer University, 1892-1942. Mercer had only 179 registered students in 1892 when the first Mercer eleven met the first Georgia eleven on the gridiron in Athens in January 1892, the FIRST college football game in the state of Georgia, and one of the first in the Southeast. College football in 1892 was a far cry from the organized splendor it is today. Uniforms were makeshift, with little or no padding. Players begin growing their ¿helmets¿ or ¿head pads¿ in early summer, and rumor has it that those long, bushy manes prompted Mercer¿s nickname--the Bears. It was a rough-and-tumble, disorganized free-for-all on the 110x53 yard field. Touchdowns counted four points; extra points, two; field goals, five; and safeties, two. But all those interesting facts--and many more--are included in this exciting chronicle. For fifty years Mercer played against the the great (Alabama, Army, Georgia, Florida, and others) and the nearly great (Savannah Library Association, Locust Grove Institute, North Georgia Aggies). Alas, college football eventually became a big (and expensive) business, and with the US facing world war, the last Mercer team was fielded in 1941. But, beginning in Fall 2013, the Mercer Bears will once again take the field following a seventy-year hiatus. This time, however, the helmets are much improved.
