Book excerpt: The chemistry of heterocyclic compounds now forms one of the most extensive and important branches of organic chemistry. The rapid expansion of investigation in this field is due largely to the ever increasing practical importance of heterocyclic com pounds. The present stage in the development of organic chemistry and closely allied branches of biology is characterized by extensive investigation of physiologically active substances encountered in the plant and animal world and playing important parts in the life processes of micro- and macro-organisms. This extensive inves tigation of alkaloids, vitamins, hormones, antibiotics and their synthetic substitutes, and also of substances that control the bio chemical processes of the nervous system, has acted as a powerful stimulus to the further development of the chemistry of hetero cyclic compounds. Moreover, there are many well known applications of heterocyclic compounds in the manufacture of dyes, synthetic resins, synthetic rubbers, and other important materials. In response to growing demands, several monographs and treatises on the chemistry of heterocyclic compounds have appeared in recent years, the most comprehensive of these being the series "Heterocyclic Compounds," edited by R. C. Elderfield, which is already appearing in Russian translation. On the other hand, the lack of a practical guide to the laboratory preparation of hetero cyclic compounds is being felt more and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the origins and execution of Russian military and political activities in Moldova, Georgia, Ukraine, and Azerbaijan. Using a realist perspective, the author concludes that there are substantial similarities in the four case studies: Russian support for minority separatist movements, conflict, Russian intervention as peacekeepers, Russian control over the diplomatic process to prevent resolution of the conflict, and a perpetuation of Russian presence in the area. The author places the conflicts in the context of international law and nationalism theory.

They range from seemingly quotidian things such as fish-hooks and baskets to great sculptures of divinities, architectural forms and canoes. These collections constitute a remarkable resource for understanding history and society across Oceania, cross-cultural encounters since the voyages of Captain Cook, and the colonial transformations that have taken place since. They are also collections of profound importance for Islanders today, who have varied responses to their disp.

This study is based on the first comprehensive survey of life in the USSR since the Harvard Project over thiry-three years ago. The essays contained analyze the variations in attitude and behaviour reflected in the findings of the Soviet Interview Project, a five-year investigation of contemporary daily life in the USSR. The survey involved interviewing thousands of recent emigrants from the USSR to the United States as a means of learning about their former day-to-day lives. Some aspects of this survey dealt with areas the Soviets themselves had never investigated, so the data were not, and indeed still are not, available even in unpublished Soviet sources. This study of a large volume of firsthand observations is extremely valuable to anyone interested in the inner workings and behavioural dynamics of the contemporary Soviet social system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With tensions between Russia and the West at an all-time high, Russian military reforms have taken a new direction in what appears to be preparation for large-scale war. In this context, now more than ever, there is an increased need to understand the past and future directions of Russian military reform and what it means for the West. In Military Reform and Militarism in Russia, Aleksandr Golts takes a hard look at the evolution of the Russian military from the collapse of the Soviet Union to its present involvement in wars in eastern Ukraine and Syria. This book is a follow-on to his study of military reform, or more precisely its failure, under President Boris Yeltsin and during the first term of President Vladimir Putin. Golts focuses on the evolution of military reform inside Russia since 2005; additionally, he examines the new phenomenon of Russian militarism and its origins in a Russian system that is hostile to both civilian control as well as civil society. The work reaches an important milestone in new works on Russian security in the age of Putin by explaining why Russian society has supported the concept of militarism in Russia. This important book traces the roots of Russian militarism since the age of Ivan the Terrible, providing new understanding as to why this new phenomenon has emerged in Russia under Putin. Golts also examines the current state of Russian military reforms through the prism of Russian history by exploring the historic struggle between the "technocrats" who pushed force modernization and the "magicians" who still believe in mass armies and want to prepare for a general war. This in turn has modern-day repercussions for the West as it will determine how Putin will use the Russian military abroad and in a potential future confrontation with NATO.
