Book excerpt: ROBERT LAMM SELECTED LYRICS is a collection by one of the founding members of the group, "Chicago." This collection contains many of his well-known compositions (Saturday In The Park, Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?, 25 Or 6 To 4) as well as many of his solo works. "I don't recall how, or why I began writing lyrics. My first songs were perhaps unusual, but sincere. As a primary songwriter for Chicago we experienced overwhelming success during our unexpectedly long sequence of recorded albums. Music and lyrics are very separate creations. I love doing both. My songs dating from the late '60's through the early 80's provided the opportunity to experiment, learn and develop as a musician. My music evolved, and so did my lyric vocabulary and intentions. By the late 80's I was urged and encouraged to collaborate with other songwriters, which often yielded good songs but more importantly, yielded lasting friendships. While collaborating on music ideas, I often found myself being the primary lyricist of many songs. After decades in California, I had found love, and returned to New York City. This was the true start of my life. With inspired energy, I was reaching for honest new territory in a series of solo albums, which contain my best work. WHY THIS BOOK? I am a man of few spoken words. While quietly loving them, I wanted our children, Sacha, Kate, and Sean, to know about my journey and my internal life, perhaps best expressed in my lyrics. In this collection, I purposefully selected songs containing lyrics that are solely of my invention, acknowledging the great collaborations on the music side." - Robert Lamm

Book excerpt: A BOOK OF SOUL ENERGIES IN POEMS & LYRICS "That Bull Headed Saviour exists," writes Joseph Lamm, " is a testament to grace. When all is taken away, when we reach the pouring out' of our self, it is our redemption." After completing the poetic narrative Andean's Ascent, Joseph Lamm found critical acclaim and modest chart success in music with the albums Watching The Coming Storm and Standing In The Tower. In 2003 he began work on a project that was born out of a passion for the writings of William Blake. Lamm also had high esteem for beat poet, author, and playwright Michael McClure's body of work, especially his bold and daring collection Rain Mirror. The result of an "emotional and physiological collapse" as McClure himself described it, Rain Mirror was a foreshadowing of Lamm's own parallel experience two years later, as a purging of his soul gave way to a wondrous spiritual awakening. Bull Headed Saviour entwines the beauty of nature, the emotion and desires of the heart, and the spirit of the soul toward a common celebration found within everyone. This collection contains many of the poems and lyrics that were written during this period, along with selected lyrics from the albums Watching The Coming Storm, Standing In The Tower, and his newest work, Hot As Sun, Vol.1.

Book excerpt: There's nothing like it in the Rush catalog—or, indeed, in the entire prog-rock canon. Stylistically expansive and intellectually ambitious, 1981's Moving Pictures was a landmark release, one that helped define the progressive genre and that ensured Rush's place in the rock pantheon. In this definitive account of the album's creation and legacy, author Will Romano explores the rare alchemy behind a record that continues to inspire musicians and listeners even today. While Permanent Waves and Hemispheres were important releases in Rush's evolution as a band, Moving Pictures marked a turning point for the Canadian trio in more ways than one. It was not only a creative triumph but a commercial one, with sales and airplay that blasted them into the stratosphere of rock stardom. Beyond the individual power of its seven songs, however, the key to its lasting significance is the distinctive overarching vision that Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart brought to the album. As Romano shows, Moving Pictures reconciled opposing creative sensibilities to a remarkable degree, giving the record real thematic depth while at the same time rendering it the very antithesis of a "concept album." Each track was carefully layered with cinematic and multisensory meaning, paradoxically using music to evoke experiences beyond the strictly aural. Consistently insightful and frequently surprising, this book is filled with behind-the-scenes details based on new research and interviews, and it guides readers through the album's dizzying array of allusions and inspirations. Newbies and fervent Rush fans alike will find this an illuminating exploration of one of the band's most enduring achievements.
