Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the steamship Robert J. Walker, an early coastal survey ship for the agency that would later become the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), that sank with loss of 21 crew off the coast of New Jersey in 1860. The wreck was a frequent stop for divers and anglers before it was identified by a team of researchers in 2013. Here, leaders in the documentation efforts describe the history of the ship and the archaeology of the shipwreck, emphasizing the collaborative community participation that made the project successful. James Delgado and Stephen Nagiewicz highlight the contributions of government archaeologists from NOAA as well as local divers from varying backgrounds. Although such groups are not typically known for working together, they united to achieve the shared goal of mapping and interpreting this historically significant shipwreck. Delgado and Nagiewicz show how incorporating local knowledge both improves archaeological work and empowers community members as stakeholders, inspiring residents to promote their maritime heritage. With Contributions from Vincent J. Capone, Matthew S. Lawrence, Dan Lieb, Deborah E. Marx, Lisa J. Stansbury, Peter F. Straub, and Albert E. Theberge

Book excerpt: Perhaps the most extensive book to date ever written on the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Let My People Go! may prove to be the encyclopedia of this pivotal event in American history. While other books written on the boycott primarily focus on the point of view of one key leader, this book discusses the boycott from several viewpoints and takes the reader on an historical journey through time, illustrating how God consistently intervened in the course of history to free His people from the evils of human injustice. Although historically based, this book is mostly inspirational, in that readers will feel inspired to activism. This work serves, in particular, to remind readers that the same God who delivered 50,000 African-American citizens of Montgomery out of the bondage of Jim Crow, is still in the business of delivering His people out of any circumstances. God still speaks to the forces of evil by willing, "Let My People Go!"

Book excerpt: Although a truly pivotal moment in America's democracy, the election of Barack Obama as the first African American President of the United States of America has served as a catharsis for the resurgence of hate groups in the United States. These hate groups are fueled by the rightwing media. Daily, far-right radio and TV talk show hosts can be heard and seen spewing out their poisonous venom against the President. From Rush Limbaugh stating he hopes the President fails, to Glenn Beck calling the President a racist, these self-proclaim “defenders of American values†and “great Americans†take pride in fanning the racial fires in the country and they are getting filthy rich in the process! The author gives a somber and revealing look at how the rightwing media have join forces, and established a Legion, in their attempt to destroy the Presidency of Barack Obama.

Book excerpt: With the growth of public and private data stores and the emergence of off-the-shelf data-mining technology, recommendation systems have emerged that specifically address the unique challenges of navigating and interpreting software engineering data. This book collects, structures and formalizes knowledge on recommendation systems in software engineering. It adopts a pragmatic approach with an explicit focus on system design, implementation, and evaluation. The book is divided into three parts: “Part I – Techniques” introduces basics for building recommenders in software engineering, including techniques for collecting and processing software engineering data, but also for presenting recommendations to users as part of their workflow. “Part II – Evaluation” summarizes methods and experimental designs for evaluating recommendations in software engineering. “Part III – Applications” describes needs, issues and solution concepts involved in entire recommendation systems for specific software engineering tasks, focusing on the engineering insights required to make effective recommendations. The book is complemented by the webpage rsse.org/book, which includes free supplemental materials for readers of this book and anyone interested in recommendation systems in software engineering, including lecture slides, data sets, source code, and an overview of people, groups, papers and tools with regard to recommendation systems in software engineering. The book is particularly well-suited for graduate students and researchers building new recommendation systems for software engineering applications or in other high-tech fields. It may also serve as the basis for graduate courses on recommendation systems, applied data mining or software engineering. Software engineering practitioners developing recommendation systems or similar applications with predictive functionality will also benefit from the broad spectrum of topics covered.

Book excerpt: This book primarily takes a close look at the Hugus-Shelby Cobra connection. In the early 1960s James Edward (Ed) Hugus personally financed the first seven production Cobras built since Carroll Shelby did not have the money or facilities for the project. Hugus ordered the first modified but unfinished Aces the A.C. Cars factory in England, and had his service department mechanics at European Cars in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania install the Ford 260 engines and Galaxie transmissions, completing the cars for sale. Once Ford signed a contract for Shelby American Cobra production in Venice, California, Hugus still completed Cobras for distribution and sales to all points east of the Mississippi River. -- In his capacity as a driver, Hugus piloted the first racing Cobra (CSX 2001) in competition, and in 1963, the first Cobra (CSX 2142) to appear at Le Mans. -- Carroll Shelby may have had the Cobra dream but it was Hugus who stepped forward and made Shelby's venture a reality.
