Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Transportation and Air Pollution synthesizes state-of-the-art methods on estimating near-road concentrations of roadway emissions. The book provides the information needed to make estimates using methods based on a minimal set of model inputs that can be applied by a wide range of users in many situations. Discussions include methods to estimate traffic emission under numerous urban driving conditions, the uncertainty of emission models, and the effects of road configurations, such as near-road solid barriers. Final sections present dispersion models that link traffic emissions with near road concentrations in urban environments. Addressing transportation-related environmental issues is extremely important as urban areas are constantly searching for ways to mitigate impacts from transportation sources. This book helps to explain dispersion models, a critical tool for estimating the impact of roadway emissions in cities. Compiles and synthesizes the state-of-the-science methods for estimating roadway emissions Demonstrates, with clear examples, how modeling methods reduce uncertainties in real-world problems Emphasizes how local-scale, semi-empirical, steady-state modeling can be applied using only a small set of inputs Offers an overview of the meteorology that governs air pollution dispersion in cities

Book excerpt: The major thrust of this investigation was the collection of data on particulate and gaseous pollutant concentrations, and detailed micrometeorological data in the vicinity of a major highway in a non-urban setting. A site on a relatively undeveloped section of the heavily travelled Long Island Expressway was selected for the collection of this data for the purpose of: (i) documentation of the distribution of sulfate, lead, total particulates and carbon monoxide at an array of sampling points adjacent to the highway; (ii) studying the micrometeorology associated with the highway, with special attention to those parameters important in the determination of atmospheric dispersion; (iii) reevaluating highway air pollutant emission factors from data gathered in tracer gas experiments; and (iv) examining the applicability of existing highway air pollutant dispersion models. The location of the site and the experimental setup for collection of pollutant data are described. Details of the data acquisition procedures also are presented in this report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air pollution control can be approached from a number of different engineering disciplines environmental, chemical, civil, and mechanical. To that end, Noel de Nevers has written an engaging overview of the subject. While based on the fundamentals of chemical engineering, the treatment is accessible to readers with only one year of college chemistry. In addition to discussions of individual air pollutants and the theory and practice of air pollution control devices, de Nevers devotes about half the book to topics that influence device selection and design, such as atmospheric models and U.S. air pollution law. The generous number of end-of-chapter problems are designed to develop more complex thinking about the concepts presented and integrate them with readers personal experienceincreasing the likelihood of deeper understanding.

Book excerpt: "The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) constructs approximately 12 miles of new concrete noise barriers each year. ODOT recently investigated the effect of earthen berms on noise mitigation and found they are an adequate alternative for concrete noise barriers based on their low installation costs, lack of operation and maintenance requirements, and their aesthetic value. While studies have been done on the relationship of concrete noise barriers and pollutant dispersion, no studies have been done on the effects of earthen berms on pollutant dispersion. Understanding pollutant concentration distribution is imperative to creating a healthy living environment for the general public. Studies have shown emission pollutants are linked to a number of different pulmonary, cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurodegenerative health issues for those people who work and live within 500 meters of the roadway. This study aimed to identify the impact earthen berms have on particulate dispersion, more specifically PM 2.5 and PM 10. The particular impact being observed was how particulate number counts (Particles/ft3) varied at different positions. While the primary focus was to identify whether particulate counts were higher or lower than expected, there was a secondary focus to identify the presence of two features: recirculation zones and plume reattachments. Data was collected from seven different sites throughout Ohio, multiple times, for a total collection of fourteen field measurements. The measurements included: PM 2.5 counts, PM 10 counts, wind speed, wind direction, temperature, humidity, and traffic."--Page 5.

Book excerpt: Long before "green" issues became a subject of widespread concern, both editors of the present book were heavily involved in research relating to pollutants in the highway environment. The result was the First International Symposium on Highway Pollution in 1983 with subsequent Second and Third Symposia held in London and Munich respectively. The proceedings of these three conferences were published respectively as Volumes 33, 59, and 93 of The Science of the Total Environment which provided individual insights into developing research projects. This book is an attempt at a more coherent overview of highway pollution in which leading international authorities were invited to contribute their works. This book covers all aspects of air, water and noise pollution in the vicinity of highways. Sources, transport and effects are reviewed and control by engineering and legal procedures are considered. The current state of knowledge is put into perspective in this unique work.
