Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Video Based Machine Learning for Traffic Intersections describes the development of computer vision and machine learning-based applications for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and the challenges encountered during their deployment. This book presents several novel approaches, including a two-stream convolutional network architecture for vehicle detection, tracking, and near-miss detection; an unsupervised approach to detect near-misses in fisheye intersection videos using a deep learning model combined with a camera calibration and spline-based mapping method; and algorithms that utilize video analysis and signal timing data to accurately detect and categorize events based on the phase and type of conflict in pedestrian-vehicle and vehicle-vehicle interactions. The book makes use of a real-time trajectory prediction approach, combined with aligned Google Maps information, to estimate vehicle travel time across multiple intersections. Novel visualization software, designed by the authors to serve traffic practitioners, is used to analyze the efficiency and safety of intersections. The software offers two modes: a streaming mode and a historical mode, both of which are useful to traffic engineers who need to quickly analyze trajectories to better understand traffic behavior at an intersection. Overall, this book presents a comprehensive overview of the application of computer vision and machine learning to solve transportation-related problems. Video Based Machine Learning for Traffic Intersections demonstrates how these techniques can be used to improve safety, efficiency, and traffic flow, as well as identify potential conflicts and issues before they occur. The range of novel approaches and techniques presented offers a glimpse of the exciting possibilities that lie ahead for ITS research and development. Key Features: Describes the development and challenges associated with Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Provides novel visualization software designed to serve traffic practitioners in analyzing the efficiency and safety of an intersection Has the potential to proactively identify potential conflict situations and develop an early warning system for real-time vehicle-vehicle and pedestrian-vehicle conflicts

Book excerpt: In an increasingly interconnected world, the ability to observe and monitor our environment has evolved dramatically. The emergence of drone and satellite technology has transformed surveillance from a cumbersome, often invasive process into a sophisticated, efficient system capable of gathering data with unprecedented accuracy and reach. As these technologies continue to advance, they offer new opportunities for applications across various fields, from national security and law enforcement to environmental monitoring and disaster response. Drones, equipped with high-resolution cameras, thermal imaging, and various sensors, can navigate complex terrains and capture real-time data from above. Satellites, orbiting the Earth at high altitudes, provide a broader perspective, capable of monitoring vast areas simultaneously. Together, they form a powerful synergy, enabling a level of surveillance that was once the realm of science fiction. However, this technological revolution comes with significant implications. While drones and satellites enhance our ability to monitor and respond to threats, they also raise critical ethical questions regarding privacy and individual rights. The capacity to track, listen to, and observe individuals without their consent challenges traditional notions of privacy and raises concerns about the potential for abuse. This book aims to delve into the intricate world of drone and satellite surveillance, examining the technologies involved and the methodologies that enable these systems to track, listen, and observe. Each chapter will explore different facets of surveillance technology, from the evolution of drones and satellites to the tracking and listening techniques employed, providing a comprehensive understanding of how these systems operate. Moreover, we will address the ethical and legal implications that arise from the use of such technologies. As society grapples with the balance between security and privacy, it is crucial to engage in thoughtful discussions about the responsible use of surveillance technology and the frameworks that govern it. As we embark on this exploration of drone and satellite surveillance, we invite you to consider the profound impact these technologies have on our lives, our safety, and our understanding of privacy in the digital age. Together, we will navigate this complex landscape, examining not only the capabilities of these tools but also the responsibilities that come with them.

Book excerpt: This book presents many valuable tips for making decisions related to road traffic in transport networks. The knowledge base in practical examples, as well as the decision support systems described in this volume, finds interest among people who face the daily challenge of searching for advanced solutions and practical applications in road traffic engineering. The publication is therefore addressed to local authorities related to the planning and development of development strategies for selected areas with regard to transport (both in the urban and regional dimension) and to representatives of business and industry, as people directly involved in the implementation of traffic engineering solutions. The tips contained in individual sections of the publication allow to look at a given problem in an advanced way and facilitate the selection of the appropriate strategy (among others, in relation to the heuristic approach to assessing the performance efficiency of road intersections in urban environments from the resilience perspective, modeling the distribution of transport pollutants in a naturally ventilated road tunnel, development of a camera-based parking monitoring system with an automatic parking spot identification). In turn, due to a new approach to theoretical models (including, inter alia, problems with the safety of passengers at tram stops or energy-efficient radio platforms for the implementation of nodes of sensor networks), the publication also interests scientists and researchers carrying out research in this area. The publication entitled "Road Traffic Analysis, Theoretical Approaches and Practical Solutions" contains selected papers submitted to and presented at the 19th “Transport Systems. Theory and Practice” Scientific and Technical Conference organized by the Department of Transport Systems, Traffic Engineering and Logistics at the Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology. The conference took place on September 18–19, 2023, in Katowice (Poland).

Book excerpt: Relatively new research ?elds such as ambient intelligence, intelligent envir- ments, ubiquitous computing, and wearable devices have emerged in recent years. These ?elds are related by a common theme: making use of novel technologies to enhance user experience by providing user-centric intelligent environments, - moving computers from the desktop and making computing available anywhere and anytime. It must be said that the concept of intelligent environments is not new and beganwithhomeautomation. Thechoiceofnameforthe?eldvariessomewhatfrom continent to continent in the English-speaking world. In general intelligent space is synonymous to intelligent environments or smart spaces of which smart homes is a sub?eld. In this collection, the terms intelligent environments and ambient int- ligence are used interchangeably throughout. Such environments are made possible by permeating living spaces with intelligent technology that enhances quality of life. In particular, advances in technologies such as miniaturized sensors, advances in communication and networking technology including high-bandwidth wireless devices and the reduction in power consumption have made possible the concept of intelligent environments. Environments such as a home, an of?ce, a shopping mall, and a travel port utilize data provided by users to adapt the environment to meet the user’s needs and improve human-machine interactions. The user information is gathered either via wearable devices or by pervasive sensors or a combination of both. Intelligent environments brings together a number of research ?elds from computer science, such as arti?cial intelligence, computer vision, machine learning, and robotics as well as engineering and architecture.

Book excerpt: The growing popularity of advanced multimedia-rich applications along with the increasing affordability of high-end smart mobile devices has led to a massive growth in mobile data traffic that puts significant pressure on the underlying network technology. However, no single network technology will be equipped to deal with this explosion of mobile data traffic. While wireless technologies had a spectacular evolution over the past years, the present trend is to adopt a global heterogeneous network of shared standards that enables the provisioning of quality of service and quality of experience to the end-user. To this end, enabling technologies like machine learning, Internet of Things and digital twins are seen as promising solutions for next generation networks that will enable an intelligent adaptive interconnected environment with support for prediction and decision making so that the heterogeneous applications and users' requirements can be highly satisfied. The aim of this textbook is to provide the readers with a comprehensive technical foundation of the mobile communication systems and wireless network design, and operations and applications of various radio access technologies. Additionally, it also introduces the reader to the latest advancements in technologies in terms of Internet of Things ecosystems, machine learning and digital twins for IoT-enabled intelligent environments. Furthermore, this textbook also includes practical use-case scenarios using Altair WinProp Software as well as Python, TensorFlow and Jupyter as support for practice-based laboratory sessions.
