Download or read book Road Lighting written by Wout van Bommel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-21 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book outlines the underlying principles on which modern road lighting is based, and provides the reader with knowledge of how these principles should be applied in practice. This book offers a completely fresh approach to the subject, reflecting how the technology of road lighting has progressed to keep up with the changes in lamp technology, especially in solid state light sources, and the increasing awareness of energy use and environmental issues. The book is divided into three parts. Part One describes lighting of open roads, with chapters discussing visual performance and comfort (including the effects of mesopic vision and age), and international standards and recommendations for road lighting. Lighting equipment is introduced; specifically lamps and luminaires in terms of their practical properties and features, but also the road surface and its characteristics. A chapter on Lighting Design makes the link between theory and practice, providing the reader with the knowledge needed for effective lighting design, including aspects relating to sustainability. The final chapter of Part One deals with lighting calculation conventions and measurements. Part Two is devoted to light pollution. The negative consequences of light pollution are described and tactics to restrict light pollution explained. Lighting criteria are defined that can be used by the lighting designer to guarantee installations stay within acceptable limits. International standards and recommendations on the restriction of light pollution are discussed. Part Three is devoted to tunnel lighting, with chapters discussing visual performance in tunnel environments, lighting criteria, standards and recommendations, and concluding with a chapter on tunnel lighting equipment and design. This book is a valuable resource for road lighting designers and engineers, students of lighting design and engineering, town planners, traffic engineers, environmental specialists, and lamp and luminaire developers and manufacturers.

Book Synopsis Roadway Lighting Design Guide by : American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials
Download or read book Roadway Lighting Design Guide written by American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and published by AASHTO. This book was released on 2005 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide replaces the 1984 publication entitled An Informational Guide for Roadway Lighting. It has been revised and brought up to date to reflect current practices in roadway lighting. The guide provides a general overview of lighting systems from the point of view of the transportation departments and recommends minimum levels of quality. The guide incorporates the illuminance and luminance design methods, but does not include the small target visibility (STV) method.
Book Synopsis World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention by : Marjorie Peden
Download or read book World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention written by Marjorie Peden and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day thousands of people are killed and injured on our roads. Millions of people each year will spend long weeks in the hospital after severe crashes and many will never be able to live, work or play as they used to do. Current efforts to address road safety are minimal in comparison to this growing human suffering. This report presents a comprehensive overview of what is known about the magnitude, risk factors and impact of road traffic injuries, and about ways to prevent and lessen the impact of road crashes. Over 100 experts, from all continents and different sectors -- including transport, engineering, health, police, education and civil society -- have worked to produce the report. Charts and tables.
Book Synopsis Estimation of the Influence of Artificial Roadway Lighting on Road Collision Frequency by : Nagham Matout
Download or read book Estimation of the Influence of Artificial Roadway Lighting on Road Collision Frequency written by Nagham Matout and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Road accidents in Quebec registered a total of 104,070 collisions with 39,541 victims of injuries and 436 fatalities in 2012 alone. Driving in dark environments increases the risk of accident likelihood for which artificial roadway lighting is typically seen as a countermeasure. However, it is unknown if non-standard levels of lighting help in reducing collision frequency, representing the case for many inconsistently illuminated roads under municipal jurisdiction. This research collected illuminance measurements for the Arthabasca region in Quebec. The collected data was combined with available operational and geometrical characteristics as well as collision frequency, to investigate what variables explain nighttime road crashes and how different levels of artificial lighting correlate with them. It was found that the presence of an intersection and having a slippery road surface produced more collisions. Roads with a complex geometry as well as traffic volume explain higher collision rates. Either standard or non-standard illuminated roads resulted in an increase of road collision frequency as compared to dark sites. Definition of standard illumination seems not to correspond to the statistical evidence herein found. Increasing the minimum level of illuminance for standard lighting helps in reducing collision frequency at standard lit sites as illuminance levels were raised. Quebec warrant grid system seems to give preference to illuminate roads at either urban locations or in the proximity to an intersection. A good correlation between all illuminated sites and a variable containing urban and suburban land uses was found. Empirical evidence also suggests that dark locations correspond mostly to rural sites (possibly with lower volumes of cars) which observe lower frequency of road collisions.

Book Synopsis Lighting Engineering: Applied Calculations by : R. H. Simons
Download or read book Lighting Engineering: Applied Calculations written by R. H. Simons and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-06-19 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Lighting Engineering: Applied Calculations' describes the mathematical background to the calculation techniques used in lighting engineering and links them to the applications with which they are used. The fundamentals of flux and illuminance, colour, measurement and optical design are covered in detail. There are detailed discussions of specific applications, including interior lighting, road lighting, tunnel lighting, floodlighting and emergency lighting. The authors have used their years of experience to provide guidance for common mistakes and useful techniques including worked examples and case studies. The last decade has seen the universal application of personal computers to lighting engineering on a day-to-day basis. Many calculations that were previously impracticable are therefore now easily accessible to any engineer or designer who has access to an appropriate computer program. However, a grasp of the underlying calculation principles is still necessary in order to utilise these technologies to the full. Written by two of the leading authorities on this subject, 'Lighting Engineering' is essential reading for practising lighting engineers, designers and architects, and students in the field of lighting.
