Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: This textbook deals comprehensively with livestock production diseases and their prevention in the major species: ruminants, swine, and poultry. It gives an interdisciplinary view on pathophysiology, prophylaxis, and health management. Livestock breeding and husbandry is often accompanied by a conflict of interest between the animal ́s biological requirements and economic producer needs. This conflict is increasingly gaining attention not only by producers, animal scientists, and veterinarians, but also by the public. It creates significant future challenges, which are described and addressed in this book. The main topics covered are: • the use of antimicrobials with emphasis on security and safety for producers/consumers • the impact of locomotion disorders on performance and welfare of farm animals • the interactions of gut microbiome, genetics, climate change, metabolic status and mineral homeostasis with reproduction, performance, animal health and welfare • infectious and respiratory diseases • the raising of neonates A special section is devoted to behavioural signs indicating an impaired animal welfare. These are the basis for precision livestock farming (PLF) technology and the development of new management concepts. The present work is a valuable resource for veterinarians, students, as well as expert readers from animal and agricultural sciences, food safety and technology. Book excerpt: Thy Life’s a Miracle RJ The Harvester of Opportunities Rakesh Jain, aka RJ, is a successful self-made entrepreneur from Lucknow who dabbled in many business ideas but didn’t blink whenever he hit a roadblock or even when he hit rock bottom. An intuitive and brave-hearted risk-taker, he was helped along by people in seemingly miraculous ways and finally set up the PRAG Group of Companies making quality engineering products for the Indian Railways. Over time, he ended up being a brilliant Relationship Jockey (RJ) who conquered great heights in the face of adversities. Armed with a smile, a business plan and shoals of positive energy he tempted fate with childlike innocence only to be showered with miracles. The chapters throw up mind-boggling questions like: Do miracles really happen? If they do, why do they happen to a man deeply involved in the world of business and enterprise? Does a human being need to be the perfect receptacle for miracles to play out in daily life? Rakesh Jain’s thrilling and dramatic life story throws up philosophical possibilities as to what construes a miracle? Can RJ’s miracles be replicated by young entrepreneurs trying to make a mark with their startups? Rakesh’s own journey has been nothing short of miraculous. When he unexpectedly lost a secure job he set up a small entrepreneurial enterprise in Lucknow and expanded it to Mumbai. Life’s unexpected twists and turns are reflected in this absorbing book by Rakesh, and its ups and downs that occur to all of us, but Rakesh‘s persona and temperament have turned seemingly unfavourable situations into agreeable and pleasant outcomes! Rakesh’s fascinating story which I have enjoyed reading and which I hope you will find inspiring. I raise a toast to his courage and indomitable will and wish him all success in his life! ~ Shatrughan Sinha A man must be ready to harness the good and gratifying from the godsend thrown at him by fate. And such a man is Rakesh, who goes beyond mere rejoicing in the fruits of simple serendipity to a belief that harvesting of opportunities is our true karma. ~ Sudhanshu Mani

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main goal of the book is to explore the idea behind data modeling in smart agriculture using information and communication technologies and tools to make agricultural practices more functional, fruitful and profitable. The research in the book looks at the likelihood and level of use of implemented technological components with regard to the adoption of different precision agricultural technologies. To identify the variables affecting farmers’ choices to embrace more precise technology, zero-inflated Poisson and negative binomial count data regression models were utilized. Outcomes from the count data analysis of a random sample of various farm operators show that various aspects, including farm dimension, farmer demographics, soil texture, urban impacts, farmer position of liabilities, and position of the farm in a state, were significantly associated with the approval severity and likelihood of precision farming technologies. Farm management information systems (FMIS) have constantly advanced in complexity as they have incorporated new technology, the most recent of which is the internet. However, few FMIS have fully tapped into the internet’s possibilities, and the newly developing idea of precision agriculture receives little or no support in the FMIS that are now being sold. FMIS for precision agriculture must meet a few more criteria beyond those of regular FMIS, which increases the technological complexity of these systems’ deployment in a number of ways. In order to construct an FMIS that meet these extra needs, the authors here evaluated various cutting-edge web-based methods. The goal was to determine the requirements that precision agriculture placed on FMIS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Issues including climate variability, water scarcity, animal welfare and declining biodiversity have led to increasing demands on farmers to conduct and communicate their farming practices so as to protect their ‘social licence to farm’. Farmers are increasingly expected to demonstrate their social and environmental responsibility as a pre-condition to being allowed to carry out their preferred farming and commercial practices. Current examples include the live animal export trade, battles over protection of aquifers from mining, and contests over rural carbon emissions. In Defending the Social Licence of Farming, authors from Australia, the USA, Europe and Iceland document the diverse issues associated with the 'social licence to farm'. They provide examples of different sectors’ strategies and experiences, and give specific indications of what is involved in coping successfully with this political and legal dimension of farming. As resources become scarce and society’s expectations more diverse and demanding, farming can expect that social licence issues will become both more difficult and more important. The book suggests that the old models of response, largely focused on defensive positions, will often be insufficient to protect the interests of both farmers and the community. This book will provide a useful stimulus for innovation and proactive policies to defend the social licence of the farm sector.
