Book Synopsis Restoration of Tropical Forest Ecosystems by : Helmut Lieth
Download or read book Restoration of Tropical Forest Ecosystems written by Helmut Lieth and published by Springer. This book was released on 1914 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The destruction of the tropical forests continues rapidly. We all know that this has global, ecological and economic consequences. The problem is of such magnitude that it can only be compared to warfare. The destruction of tropical forests is both detrimental to the global ecology as well as posing a serious threat to the people living in these areas. Furthermore, the overutilization of such a valuable resource poses a serious threat to the next generations. Besides the problem generated for the people in these regions, and for the earth in general, there is a moral obligation to preserve the vast biological diversity in the tropical forests. We have a commitment to all species on earth as well as man and, therefore, need to preserve as many as possible, if not all. This book discusses the problem from different angles: from forestry, ecology and nature conservation. The two main problem areas are: first the wise utilization of that portion of the forest which will be used - especially the introduction of planned forestry in such areas and second the development of a good plan for nature conservation in the tropics.
Book Synopsis Sustainable Land Management for NEOM Region by : Mashael M. Al Saud
Download or read book Sustainable Land Management for NEOM Region written by Mashael M. Al Saud and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of its type on NEOM Region, NW of Saudi Arabia. This region has been designated in 2017 to be an international economic hub. However, no studies have been done on this region which occupies several natural resources including remarkable landscape with unique ecological species, ores and water resources. The region is also vulnerable to many aspects of threatening natural hazards. Based on her expertise, namely geomorphological processes, earth sciences, space techniques and natural risk assessment, the author made an initiative to produce this book using advanced tools, specifically satellite images and geo-information system. The book introduces several thematic maps obtained for the first time for NEOM Region. Hence, it represents a scientific guide for land management and urban planning approaches. This book is a very significant document for a variety of readers and researchers including decision makers, land managers and planners, as well as geographers and geologists. In addition, the basic concepts and new approaches attract researchers and academic teams including students, universities and research centers not only in Saudi Arabia, but in different parts of the World.
Book Synopsis The Power of Urban Water by : Nicola Chiarenza
Download or read book The Power of Urban Water written by Nicola Chiarenza and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is a global resource for modern societies - and water was a global resource for pre-modern societies. The many different water systems serving processes of urbanisation and urban life in ancient times and the Middle Ages have hardly been researched until now. The numerous contributions to this volume pose questions such as what the basic cultural significance of water was, the power of water, in the town and for the town, from different points of view. Symbolic, aesthetic, and cult aspects are taken up, as is the role of water in politics, society, and economy, in daily life, but also in processes of urban planning or in urban neighbourhoods. Not least, the dangers of polluted water or of flooding presented a challenge to urban society. The contributions in this volume draw attention to the complex, manifold relations between water and human beings. This collection presents the results of an international conference in Kiel in 2018. It is directed towards both scholars in ancient and mediaeval studies and all those interested in the diversity of water systems in urban space in ancient and mediaeval times.
Book Synopsis Tools in Fluvial Geomorphology by : G. Mathias Kondolf
Download or read book Tools in Fluvial Geomorphology written by G. Mathias Kondolf and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluvial Geomorphology studies the biophysical processes acting in rivers, and the sediment patterns and landforms resulting from them. It is a discipline of synthesis, with roots in geology, geography, and river engineering, and with strong interactions with allied fields such as ecology, engineering and landscape architecture. This book comprehensively reviews tools used in fluvial geomorphology, at a level suitable to guide the selection of research methods for a given question. Presenting an integrated approach to the interdisciplinary nature of the subject, it provides guidance for researchers and professionals on the tools available to answer questions on river restoration and management. Thoroughly updated since the first edition in 2003 by experts in their subfields, the book presents state-of-the-art tools that have revolutionized fluvial geomorphology in recent decades, such as physical and numerical modelling, remote sensing and GIS, new field techniques, advances in dating, tracking and sourcing, statistical approaches as well as more traditional methods such as the systems framework, stratigraphic analysis, form and flow characterisation and historical analysis. This book: Covers five main types of geomorphological questions and their associated tools: historical framework; spatial framework; chemical, physical and biological methods; analysis of processes and forms; and future understanding framework. Provides guidance on advantages and limitations of different tools for different applications, data sources, equipment and supplies needed, and case studies illustrating their application in an integrated perspective. It is an essential resource for researchers and professional geomorphologists, hydrologists, geologists, engineers, planners, and ecologists concerned with river management, conservation and restoration. It is a useful supplementary textbook for upper level undergraduate and graduate courses in Geography, Geology, Environmental Science, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and interdisciplinary courses in river management and restoration.

Book Synopsis Implementation of the Nitrates Directive in England by : Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee
Download or read book Implementation of the Nitrates Directive in England written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Communities adopted the Nitrates Directive on 12 December 1991 with the objective of reducing water pollution caused or induced by nitrates from agricultural sources and preventing further such pollution. It requires member states to designate as Nitrate Vulnerable Zones areas of land that drain into polluted waters and to set up action programmes in these zones. Nitrate pollution can also increase eutrophication, reduce biodiversity and affect the recreational value of water. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) estimates that the cost of treating nitrates in drinking water between 2005 and 2010 will be £288 million in capital expenditure and £6 million a year in operating costs. Defra issued a consultation document on the Directive in 2007, and its proposed changes reflect the fact that the European Commission does not think the Directive was properly implemented in England. The proposals would have a significant impact on some 195,500 farmers in the affected areas, requiring them to alter practices for storing and spreading livestock manure and for applying chemical fertiliser. The Committee finds insufficient evidence to assess how effective the current action programme has been in reducing nitrate pollution in England. It welcomes some of Defra's proposals but has concerns about others. The proposed new action plan will place a considerable financial burden on livestock and dairy farmers, and Defra should make representations to the Treasury on the need for support in the form of tax relief for the construction of slurry storage facilities.
Book Synopsis Metrology in Urban Drainage and Stormwater Management by : Jean-Luc Bertrand-Krajewski
Download or read book Metrology in Urban Drainage and Stormwater Management written by Jean-Luc Bertrand-Krajewski and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the advancements made in applied metrology in the field of Urban Drainage and Storm water Management over the past two decades in scientific research as well as in practical applications. Given the broadness of this subject (measuring principles, uncertainty in data, data validation, data storage and communication, design, maintenance and management of monitoring networks, technical details of sensor technology), the focus is on water quantity and a sound metrological basis. The book offers common ground for academics and practitioners when setting up monitoring projects in urban drainage and storm water management. This will enable an easier exchange of results so as to allow for a faster scientific progress in the field. A second, but equally important goal, is to allow practitioners access to scientific developments and gained experience when it comes to monitoring urban drainage and storm water systems. In-depth descriptions of international case studies covering all aspects discussed in the book are presented, along with self-training exercises and codes available for readers on a companion website.

Download or read book Portals to the Past and to the Future written by Jürgen Seefeldt and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of the digital era has raised questions on the future course of library development. The challenge of maintaining a balance between their educational, cultural and service roles has presented libraries with new challenges - challenges which their rich and varied media holdings, modern technical infrastructure and information specialist competence well equip them to face. This fourth revised and updated English edition of "Portals to the Past and to the Future" by Jürgen Seefeldt and Ludger Syré, now in its fifth German edition, is an in-depth state-of-the art report on current German librarianship. Lavishly illustrated, the book traces the history of libraries in Germany, portrays the various types of library and cites many examples of the outstanding achievements of nationwide library cooperation in the Federal Republic of Germany. The reader will gain both a revealing insight into the cultural and educational policy underlying the German library system and an outline of the profession. Special attention has been paid to current developments such as the preservation and presentation of the common cultural heritage and the emergence of the digital library. This book has been translated not only into English but also into Arabic, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Russian and Turkish and is now the standard work on libraries and librarianship in Germany. Because of the interest it has generated internationally, it was decided to publish the German and English versions of this new edition simultaneously. The book provides trainee librarians and non-librarians alike with a clear picture of the way in which libraries were able to cooperate in the aftermath of the Second World War to overcome the vagaries of the federal system and create an effective decentralized library network more than a match for the challenges of the third millennium.
