Book excerpt: "Tying the Knot", a western phrase for getting married, has been a standard part of the Hindu weddings for thousands of years. These rituals involve "binding" the couple with various knots; physically, mentally and spiritually. "Tying the Knot" may appear to be a simple procedure but getting there requires a lot of thorough planning and excellent management. The Hindu Weddings, especially in western countries, are a fusion of multiple cultures, religions, races, traditions and customs. Add to that the intergenerational differences! To make a beautiful Hindu wedding happen requires a great balancing of all those factors and bridging of different views and approaches between all the parties involved. In addition to the couple and the parents, it takes a tremendous number of dedicated people to conduct a successful wedding! In this book, the author, a pragmatic Hindu priest, discusses his unique perspectives of how to officiate a perfect wedding ceremony and plan other events suitable to modern demographics in a practical and in an all-inclusive way based on his more than 20 years of experience. In this book, the parents are first generation Indians, born and brought up in India but now settled in the US. The bride, groom, or both are second generation Indians, born and raised in the western culture. Their parents may come from different parts of the world, may have different cultures, different customs, traditions, and even different faiths. Unlike their parents who were most likely married by arranged marriage system, the present brides and the grooms have found their own partners with whom they want to tie the knot by traditional Hindu rituals but custom tailored to their views and their audience. Many Hindu priests, very proficient in wedding rituals, conduct the weddings in the traditional Hindu way. Those ceremonies may lack the formality or discipline required for the present day demographics in the western cultural setting. Although full of depth and spirituality, these ceremonies may be too regional, too long and yes, some times non-interesting, allowing socialization among the guests throughout the ceremony. That is why, the couple, the parents and the priests need a practical guide on how to work together to conduct the most beautiful Hindu wedding in any part of the world. This book offers exactly that guide with a systematic approach, from planning to completion, based on the author's experience of officiating more than 175 ceremonies in America and elsewhere and the feedback from the couples, parents, wedding planners and attending guests. The author's custom ceremonies still include all the authentic rituals but he delivers them in an interesting, logical, and meaningful way by creatively connecting with the attendees. This results in a pin-drop silence, serenity and sanctity that your wedding ceremony deserves. He focuses not just on the ceremony but also discusses the Hindu philosophy behind those rituals. This book should be helpful to the engaged couples, their parents, wedding planners, invited guests and anybody else who is interested in Hindu Weddings.

Book excerpt: Indian civilization is replete with ancient texts of wisdom. However, it is rare to find the rites and rituals of Hindu marriage in those texts. It is an intricate process of customs, rites and rituals, the validity of which is easily questioned by the young minds not knowing its background and heavily dependent on half-baked answers available from semi-knowledgeable elders who have also picked these customs from their ancestors. Many of these have been reduced to merely a superfluous show reducing their validity further. This book explains the marriage process and rituals in a systematic way so that anyone can take up the event with confidence and understand the validity and process of rituals involved.

Book excerpt: A ground-breaking look at the sexual revolution that is beginning to sweep through urban India. The National Bestseller India in Love: Marriage and Sexuality in the 21st Century is a ground-breaking look at the sexual revolution that is starting to sweep through urban India. Bestselling author Ira Trivedi travelled from Shilling in the northeast to Chennai in the south, Konark in the east to Mumbai in the west and over a dozen other cities and towns in order to gain unprecedented insights into changing sexual habits, marriage and love everywhere in the country. The book explores the mating habits of young Indians on college campuses and in offices, examines the new face of Indian pornography and prostitution, probes India's gay revolution and delves into history, economics and sociology to try and understand how the nation that gave the world the Kamasutra could have become a closed, repressed society with a shockingly high incidence of rape and violence against women the dark underside to the greater sexual freedom that men and women in our cities have begun to enjoy today. Trivedi goes deep into one of the most enduring institutions of Indian society marriage and investigates how it is faring in modern times. She interviews marriage brokers, astrologers, lawyers, relationship counsellors, 'love commandos', parents and nervous young brides and grooms, amongst others, to present a nuanced picture of the state of marriage in the country. She discovers that love marriages are skyrocketing and even the age-old arranged marriage is undergoing a transformation. Also on the rise are divorces, extra-marital affairs, open marriages, live-in-relationships and the like. Supporting her eye-opening reportage with hundreds of interviews, detailed research, authoritative published surveys and discussions with experts on various aspects of sexuality and marriage, Trivedi has written a book that is often startling, sometimes controversial, but is always entertaining and original.

Book excerpt: Bollywood Weddings examines how second-generation Indian-American Hindus of the middle and upper classes negotiate courtship and wedding rituals. Kavita Ramdya integrates the stories of twenty couples, showing the ways and means by which a subcommunity falls in love and expresses their identity. She provides readers with a window into these Indian-American couples who are navigating identities through a major rite of passage in their lives-marriage. She affirms that this community flaunts all things Indian as a way to assert their American identity. Many of these couples are occasional Hindus, displaying their Hindu religious background only on important occasions. Instead of choosing either India or America, or arriving at a compromise between the two, this community embraces both cultures simultaneously.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2019 Gordon K. & Sybil Lewis Book Award In 1833, the abolition of slavery in the British Empire led to the import of exploited South Asian indentured workers in the Caribbean under extreme oppression. Dave Ramsaran and Linden F. Lewis concentrate on the Indian descendants' processes of mixing, assimilating, and adapting while trying desperately to hold on to that which marks a group of people as distinct. In some ways, the lived experience of the Indian community in Guyana and Trinidad represents a cultural contradiction of belonging and non-belonging. In other parts of the Caribbean, people of Indian descent seem so absorbed by the more dominant African culture and through intermarriage that Indo-Caribbean heritage seems less central. In this collaboration based on focus groups, in-depth interviews, and observation, sociologists Ramsaran and Lewis lay out a context within which to develop a broader view of Indians in Guyana and Trinidad, a numerical majority in both countries. They address issues of race and ethnicity but move beyond these familiar aspects to track such factors as ritual, gender, family, and daily life. Ramsaran and Lewis gauge not only an unrelenting process of assimilative creolization on these descendants of India, but also the resilience of this culture in the face of modernization and globalization.
