Book excerpt: In this New York Times bestselling memoir, West Side Story star Rita Moreno shares her remarkable journey from a young girl with simple beginnings in Puerto Rico to Hollywood legend—one of the few performers, and the only Hispanic, to win an Oscar, Grammy, Tony and two Emmys. Born Rosita Dolores Alverio in the idyll of Puerto Rico, Moreno, at age five, embarked on a harrowing sea voyage with her mother and wound up in the harsh barrios of the Bronx, where she discovered dancing, singing, and acting as ways to escape a tumultuous childhood. Making her Broadway debut by age thirteen—and moving on to Hollywood in its Golden Age just a few years later—she worked alongside such stars as Gary Cooper, Yul Brynner, and Ann Miller. When discovered by Louis B. Mayer of MGM, the wizard himself declared: “She looks like a Spanish Elizabeth Taylor.” Cast by Gene Kelly as Zelda Zanders in Singin’ in the Rain and then on to her Oscar-winning performance in West Side Story, she catapulted to fame—yet found herself repeatedly typecast as the “utility ethnic,” a role she found almost impossible to elude. Here, for the first time, Rita reflects on her struggles to break through Hollywood’s racial and sexual barriers. She explores the wounded little girl behind the glamorous façade—and what it took to find her place in the world. She talks candidly about her relationship with Elvis Presley, her encounters with Howard Hughes, and the passionate romance with Marlon Brando that nearly killed her. And she shares the illusiveness of a “perfect” marriage and the incomparable joys of motherhood. Infused with Rita Moreno’s quick wit and deep insight, this memoir is the dazzling portrait of a stage and screen star who longed to become who she really is—and triumphed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am not a celebrity or any other house hold name you could have heard about on the radio or TV. This is my first book. I have no other writing experience. One day as I was sitting in one of my sister's TV room wasting more of my time it dawn on me to write a book about my short hard life I had lived. For some reason I had the faith that this book would be in stores next to celebrities books. I guess it was because I really had a lot of faith that my book on my real life problems maybe would help someone to get some real help with similar issues before it would be too late. I am just a small town girl that has encountered a lifetime of problems by the age of 43, by my own doing mostly and some the devil helped me with, since I have been on God's Mysterious, challenging, unexpected and surprising earth. I will talk about the pain I endured when I was molested at the age of eleven by a close family friend. I lived through depression, anxiety and panic attacks that almost caused me to end my life on many occasions. I've battled mental and physical abuse by the hands of my ex-husband. I have been dealing with the unexpected death of my last man that had almost caused me to lose my mine. I battled the demon of drugs that could have ended my life with one puffing on crack cocaine along with a lot of health problems that could have caused me to have a stroke or heart attack. I hope and pray that my book will help someone; somehow to deal with their problems better than I did. I thank you for purchasing my first book with all my heart. There will be more books to come. ENJOY! GOD BLESS!

Book excerpt: Master manipulator, short-fuse angry, impatient, self-centred, controlling, and jealous. These are but a few of the adjectives Rita Murray uses to describe herself—until her transformation, that is. Can a person really change deeply-imbedded aspects of their personality? Traits that have been learned since childhood, practiced patterns of behaviour, is it possible to alter these so significantly that it is as if the person is reborn? In Rita’s Transformation the author, Rita Murray, outlines her life: what she was like, what happened to her, and what she is like today. Rita describes the incidents that warranted the changes she needed to make. Most changes came very slowly, although some were quick, but all were necessary and beneficial for Rita to have a better life and enjoy the time she has left before going Home. Some of the stories may seem funny now but at the time they were difficult—yet all were learning experiences. The author shares her understanding and advice on: • Where to go to get the right kind of help from the diseases of alcoholism and drug addiction • How to reframe one’s mind to think the right things in the right way and then to choose to act in a more positive manner • How to change to be a better person by getting to know Jesus Christ and how to follow Him by reading and studying the Bible and getting help from a spiritual leader. God has changed Rita to the point that she is not the person she was before she invited Him to come into her life and help her to be willing to change. Rita’s story has the power to motivate individuals to get help when they need to and find some of the happiness and peace that Rita has today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emma has everything Rose lacks: a faithful husband, beauty, and a healthy baby boy. Rose meets her in the hospital after her own baby dies from premature birth, and when Emma’s child dies in a suspicious house fire shortly after, the obsessive and unstable Rose is the primary suspect. Now, after almost five years in prison, Rose is up for parole, but probation officer Cate Austin must first decide whether this accused murderer can be released or if she really is a threat to society. The answer seems obvious at first, but as Cate delves deeper into Rose’s disturbing past—a suicidal mother, a distant father, on her own at a young age—the probation officer becomes entangled in the inmate’s dark world. Winner of CWA Debut Dagger Award and the Luke Bitmead Bursary, The Woman Before Me is a poignant psychological thriller that explores relationships, dysfunctional families, and the penal system with depth and sensitivity that culminates in a shocking conclusion. Did she really do it? Where does the line between love and obsession lie? Can justice be served?

Book excerpt: After reading “Lovely Rita's Café” I felt young again, like time stood still. The people, the places, and the experiences were so familiar. It resurrected memories that I thought I had lost in the haze of the 70's. Anyone who grew up in this unique time will find this book fresh, funny, and so very real. Whether you are a frisbee enthusiast or just curious about the free spirit, groovy lifestyle that surfaced in so many small towns all over America, you will thoroughly enjoy this read, BUT NO WAY WOULD I LET MY CHILDREN READ IT! -Julie Webber, Author's College Roommate I think Ms. Wild has uniquely captured the feel and essence of a special time, bringing to life a singular culture in a way that everyone can connect with. As young men and women we all have that special group that comes to identify us in a time and a place, those experiences that define us and make us what we are. Her concise prose and touching insights into the life and exploits of Rita VanKamp immediately transport me to a self I too often forget, reminding me of all those things I did and overcame and that are part of what I am. We can all benefit from a story like this, smiling memories beyond thirty second solutions. You didn't have to be part of the frisbee culture to enjoy this hilarious and touching story. I think anyone who reads “Lovely Rita's Café” will be renewed again. Afterward a smile will come to their face when they see a young person going off to school or struggling to make their way in this complicated world we live in. -Peter Stravlo, Smoklahoman Freestyle Team
