Louisa Shea explores modernity's debt to Cynicism by examining the works of thinkers who turned to the ancient Cynics as a model for reinventing philosophy and dared to imagine an alliance between a socially engaged Enlightenment and the least respectable of early Greek philosophies. While Cynicism has always resided on the fringes of philosophy, Shea argues, it remained a vital touchstone for writers committed to social change and helped define the emerging figure of the public intellectual in the 18th century. C'est donc pour cette raison que le gouvernement de Sir John A. Macdonald pressé par les églises chrétiennes a trouvé le moyen de l'éliminer de cette terre malgré les protestations qui fusaient de toutes parts. Louis Riel devait donc subir le même sort que celui qui l'a inspirer, Jésus de Nazareth, et c'est exactement pourquoi je m'attends à la même conclusion, puisque je fais la même chose, c'est-à-dire, ouvrir les yeux du monde.

In these plays, the abuses of power are triggered by fearless speeches that question the legitimacy of power and are misinterpreted as breaches of allegiance; in these plays, both the bold speech of the fearless speaker and the performative sentence of the banisher trigger the relentless dynamics of what Deleuze and Guattari termed ‘deterritorialisation’. This book approaches the central question of the abusive denial of territory from various angles: linguistic, legal and ethical, physical and psychological. Various strategies of resistance are explored: illegal return, which takes the form of a frontal counterattack employing a ‘war machine’; ruse and the experience of internal(ised) exile; and mental escape, which nonetheless may lead to madness, exhaustion or heartbreak.

Les récentes évolutions techniques rendent son usage de plus en plus intrusif dans la vie privée mais aussi dans l'espace public. Cet ouvrage explore une dimension encore inédite de la vidéosurveillance. Elle réside dans le caractère automatique de la détection des « comportements anormaux » dans l'espace public. L'anormalité est un enjeu fondamental dans la définition de la citoyenneté, en établissant une frontière entre ce qui est jugé acceptable et ce qui doit être réprimé. Or, des projets de recherches appliqués récents tentent de coupler l'usage de la vidéosurveillance avec une évaluation automatique de l'anormalité. Désormais, les algorithmes contribuent à définir ces comportements anormaux et donc, dessinent les figures de l’anormal. L’automaticité modifie considérablement les capacités d’appréciation de la normalité, jusqu’ici de la compétence du juge et des pouvoirs publics. La convergence des techniques (vidéo, base de données informatiques...) contribue à modifier profondément les frontières de l’espace public et, par conséquent, de l’espace démocratique. L’ouvrage présente les débats interdisciplinaires qui ont eu lieu à l’occasion d’une application technique actuellement en cours. S’interroger sur ce qu’est un comportement anormal permet de rappeler les modalités d’élaboration de la normalité dans une démocratie.
