Book excerpt: Fundamental objectives of sustainability, economics, safety and reliability, and proliferation resistance, physical protection and stakeholder relations must be considered during the design of an advanced reactor. However, an advanced reactor's core damage frequency dominates all other considerations at the preliminary stage of reactor design. An iterative four-step methodology to guide the MIT gas-cooled fast reactor emergency core cooling system design through PRA insights was utilized based upon the preliminary stage of the reactor design and activities currently ongoing in the nuclear industry, regulator, and universities regarding advanced reactors. Advanced reactor designs also face an uncertain regulatory environment. It was concluded from the move towards risk- informed regulations of current reactors, that there will be some level of probabilistic insights in the regulations and supporting regulatory documents for advanced, "Generation-IV" nuclear reactors. The four-step methodology is moreover used to help designers analyze designs under potential risk-informed regulations and predict design justifications the regulator will require during the licensing process. The iterative design guidance methodology led to a reduction of the CDF contribution due to a LOCA of over three orders of magnitude from the baseline ECCS design (from 1.19x10-5 to 6.48x10-8 for the 3x100% loop configuration) and potential ECCS licensing issues were identified. This illustrates the value of formal design guidance based upon PRA.

Book excerpt: The Generation IV Forum is an international nuclear energy research initiative aimed at developing the fourth generation of nuclear reactors, envisaged to enter service halfway the 21st century. One of the Generation IV reactor systems is the Gas Cooled Fast Reactor (GCFR), the subject of study in this thesis. The Generation IV reactor concepts should improve all aspects of nuclear power generation. Within Generation IV, the GCFR concept specifically targets sustainability of nuclear power generation. The Gas Cooled Fast Reactor core power density is high in comparison to other gas cooled reactor concepts. Like all nuclear reactors, the GCFR produces decay heat after shut down, which has to be transported out of the reactor under all circumstances. The layout of the primary system therefore focuses on using natural convection Decay Heat Removal (DHR) where possible, with a large coolant fraction in the core to reduce friction losses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The failure probability of a passive decay heat removal system after a LOCA is evaluated as part of a risk-informed design process for a helium-cooled fast reactor. The system was modeled using RELAP5-3D. The epistemic uncertainties in input parameters as well as the epistemic model uncertainties in the code were assessed and propagated through the model using Latin hypercube sampling. The changes in the design that we investigated reduced the overall failure probability of the system by reducing the impact of the major contributor to the failure probability. Sensitivity analyses led to two unexpected results. First, the key factors affecting the system failure probability are the location of the thermal insulation (inside or outside the hot leg) and the uncertainty in the insulation thermal conductivity. Second, the heat transfer coefficient in the core is not as important as one might expect. Our results show that the heat transfer coefficient in the containment structures is more important. Different methods for sensitivity analysis were applied and gave consistent results.

Book excerpt: This publication is a revision and combinaton of two previous Safety Guides: Safety Series No. 50-SG-D6. Ultimate Heat Sink and Directly Associated Heat Transport Systems for Nuclear Power Plants (1981). and Safety Series No. 50-SG-D13, Reactor Coolant and Associated Systems in Nuclear Power Plants (1986), which are superseded by this new Safety Guide. The revision takes account of developments in the design of the reactor coolant and associated systems in nuclear power plants since the earlier. Safety Guides were published in 1981 and 1986, respectively. The other objectives of the revision are to ensure consistency with the Requirements for Design, issued in 2000, and to update the technical content. In addition, an appendix on pressurized heavy water reactors has been included.

Book excerpt: This Safety Guide provides recommendations on how to meet the requirements established in IAEA Safety Standards Series No. SSR-2/1 (Rev. 1) in relation to the reactor coolant system and associated systems for nuclear power plants. It is a revision of IAEA Safety Standards Series No. NS-G-1.9, which it supersedes. The publication takes into account developments, experience and practices in the design of nuclear power plants throughout their lifetime. It references and considers other IAEA safety standards that are relevant and related to the design of the reactor coolant system and associated systems for nuclear power plants. Recommendations to achieve the required reliability of the capabilities designed to transfer residual heat to the ultimate heat sink in the different plant states are also included. As those systems are dependent on specific reactor technologies, more appropriate recommendations have been developed respectively for pressurized light water reactors, boiling water reactors and pressurized heavy water reactors.
