Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are nearly 24,000 ophthalmologists in the United States, with 500 physicians newly entering the ophthalmology field each year and approximately half of those being women. Although women now represent approximately half of all ophthalmologists, gender disparities remain when it comes to certain subspecialties (e.g., surgical retina), leadership roles (e.g., department chairs), industry involvement (e.g., consultancy and advisory board positions), and even academic publications. There has been a recently heightened interest in female representation in this field which has manifested in several ways (e.g., conferences geared towards women in ophthalmology, non-peer-reviewed publications about women in ophthalmology, and mentorship programs specifically for women). This book is the first of its kind in procuring and disseminating information—pertaining to both career and life—in an organized, concrete, and enduring way. Women in Ophthalmology is a comprehensive collection of chapters primarily written by women in the field of ophthalmology. The book aims to guide others through milestones and challenges women may face during their careers, and shares sound insights into how to deal with unique issues both inside and outside the workplace. Topics that are widely applicable to all who work in ophthalmology are included, such as finding mentors, collaborating within industry, handling work-life balance, and seeking out leadership opportunities. Each chapter combines personal anecdotes with knowledge from leaders in the field which both men and women will find highly valuable.

This book was released on 2024-04-19 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diabetes is a metabolic disorder of chronic hyperglycemia that causes numerous complications. The International Diabetes Federation and World Health Organization report that approximately 537 million people worldwide have diabetes in 2021, which may increase to 700 million by 2045. Diabetes and its complications significantly lower the quality of life of patients and cause more than 4 million deaths yearly. Diabetes and its complications also increase premature mortality, increasing society's economic burden. Numerous studies reveal that the chronic multisystem injury and dysfunction can be caused by diabetes, including cardiac and cerebral vascular lesions, nephropathy, retinopathy and neuropathy. In addition, diabetes usually co-occurs with other diseases that may have certain risk factors in common. For example, patients with diabetes are more likely to have hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or asthma. However, there is still a lack of knowledge on the relationship between diabetes and other potential comorbidities such as hepatitis infection, hearing impairment and periodontal disease. Furthermore, common risk factors contributing to the pathogenesis of diabetes and comorbidities are far from fully understood. Several comorbidities (e.g., cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases) raise the extra chances of death in patients with diabetes, but the association between diabetes and mortality of other diseases, such as endometrial or kidney cancer, is inconsistent. Further research is still needed to reveal the excess mortality associated with diabetic comorbidities.

Book excerpt: Now in paperback: a #1 New York Times–bestselling author’s gripping chronicle of “two doctors . . . bringing light to those in darkness” (Time) Second Suns is the unforgettable true story of two very different doctors with a common mission: to rid the world of preventable blindness. Dr. Geoffrey Tabin was the high-achieving “bad boy” of his class at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Sanduk Ruit grew up in a remote village in the Himalayas, where cataract blindness—easily curable in modern hospitals—amounts to an epidemic. Together, they pioneered a new surgical method, by which they have restored sight to over 100,000 people—all for about $20 per operation. Master storyteller David Oliver Relin brings the doctors’ work to vivid life through poignant portraits of their patients, from old men who can once again walk treacherous mountain trails, to children who can finally see their mothers’ faces. The Himalayan Cataract Project is changing the world—one pair of eyes at a time.

Book excerpt: From the author of the Costa Prize shortlisted The Good Guy The Yardley family is fracturing. Eighteen years since their move to Brussels and the future is clouded with uncertainty for Neil, a Brit, American Marcy and their three Belgian-born children. Wrapped up in their own worries, Neil and Marcy fail to see how much their middle child, Alec, is struggling. When Marcy offers shelter to a young Syrian refugee, it triggers an explosive train of events that affects every member of the family. Against a backdrop of growing terror threats and Europe's worst refugee crisis since the Second World War, Misplaced Persons astutely explores miscues and misunderstandings, the strength of family bonds and the meaning of home.
