Book excerpt: A USA TODAY BESTSELLER! I’ll just ignore Rider and those soul-searing looks he gives me every time I reach for the baby. He broke my heart three years ago… he won’t get a second chance. What’s worse than having Rider Kingston, the hotshot quarterback on your college football team, give you the big brushoff because he doesn’t want to get serious? You’d probably think living across the street from him, where you get a first-hand view of his hookups, right? That’s what I thought, until someone drops off a surprise baby with a note pinned to her blanket that says one of those jocks—either Rider or one of his numbskull roommates—is the father. I wouldn’t care one bit about their paternity problems—except my brother lives there, too… which means that adorable squawking bundle might be my niece, and there’s no way I’m leaving her unattended with those bumbling football players. They need my help, even if they don’t know it yet. Once we solve this dilemma and figure out who the daddy is, I’m out. * * * The Varsity Dad Dilemma is a sexy, small-town sports romance novel from USA Today best-selling author Lex Martin. Over three thousand readers are raving about the passionate, angst-filled enemies-to-lovers romance, and the smoking-hot chemistry between Gabby, the slightly nerdy Latina with a take-charge attitude and her surprisingly sweet ex-boyfriend Rider. Who knew that he actually had a heart of gold underneath that deliciously ripped, well-defined exterior? “Gabby and Rider have great chemistry and their banter is HOT. While she had loathed everything about Rider since freshman year, there was no denying the physical attraction they had towards each other… If you are looking for a college romance that brings the laughter, with loads of sexual tension and plenty of heart melting moments, check this book out!” – Reader Review

Book excerpt: Grieving Dads: To the Brink and Back is a collection of candid stories from grieving dads that were interviewed over a two year period. The book offers insight from fellow members of, in the haunting words of one dad, "this terrible, terrible club," which consists of men who have experienced the death of a child. This book is a collection of survival stories by men who have survived the worst possible loss and lived to tell the tale. They are real stories that pull no punches and are told with brutal honesty. Men that have shared their deepest and darkest moments. Moments that included thoughts of suicide, self-medication and homelessness. Some of these men have found their way back from the brink while others are still standing there, stuck in their pain. The core message of Grieving Dads is "you're not alone." It is a message that desperately needs to be delivered to grieving dads who often grieve in silence due to society's expectations. Grieving Dads: To the Brink and Back is a book that no grieving dad or anyone who cares for him should be without. As any grieving parent will tell you, there are no words to describe the hell one experiences after the death of a child. Many men have no clue how to deal with or understand the myriad emotional, mental, and physical responses experienced after the death of a child. Stories appearing in the book have been carefully selected to represent a cross-section of fathers, as well as a diverse portrayal of loss. This approach helps reflect the full spectrum of grief, from the early days of shock and trauma to the long view after living with loss for many years. Any bereaved father will find brotherhood in these pages, and will feel that someone understands them. While there is plenty of raw emotion in this book-the stories are not exercises in self-pity nor are they studies in grief. They are survival stories instead. Some are testimonies to hope. Some are gut-wrenching accounts of overwhelming despair. But all of them are real-life stories from real-life grieving dads, and they show that even if one reaches his physical and emotional bottom, it is possible (although not easy) to live through that pain and find one's way to the other side of grief. Most dads in this book found themselves in a state of physical, mental, and emotional collapse after the death of their child. As if the losses alone weren't enough to drive these men to the brink, most try to deal with their grief according to the conventional wisdom so many men are brought up with, which perversely, increases their suffering all the more. We all know the party line about how men are "supposed" to deal with loss or even disappointment: toughen up, get back to work, take it like a man, support your wife, don't talk about your emotions, don't lose control, and if you must cry-by all means do so in private.

Book excerpt: This is a true story of six generations of family incest to be read by every family member, psychologist, medical professional, researcher, educator, policy maker, law maker, legal professional, and every talk show host. I am the Great Granddaughter, Great Niece, Niece, Daughter, Sister, Cousin, Mother, Grandmother, Friend, and Neighbor of an accused Child Molester. And my family is not the only family. It is no longer a family secret; it is an epidemic and this war against our children must stop now. It is my theory that incest is an illness passed on from generation to generation the same as other addictions/afflictions which take over the victim's feelings and drives them to conduct these acts which they have no control over. Until we address this issue as a disease instead of a crime our jails and communities will continue to be overloaded with these outcasts; our loved ones! We must build an ARCH; a safe place where families may Acknowledge their illness, accept Responsibility, Confront the illness and begin the Healing to STOP INCEST. We can't change history but it is up to us to change the future! We must provide rights to the sexually challenged by providing awareness, education, resources and treatment to end this story. Six generation later, I refuse to remain silent and allow this to continue. We must break the silence, demand change, and take steps to cure this legally silenced unspeakable epidemic.

When she needs help training her foals, she hires a Haitian-Creole cowboy from New Orleans with a laugh as big as the Montana sky. LJ Delisle can’t stand the idea that Andra might be lonely—or eating frozen TV dinners. He bakes his way into her kitchen with a lemon velvet cake, and offers her cooking lessons that set them on the road to romance. But even their love can’t escape the shadow of what they've been through. Despite their growing friendship and his gentle rapport with the horses, LJ is still an outsider facing small-town suspicions. Before they can work through their issues, LJ is called home by a family emergency. In the centuries-old, raggedly rebuilt streets of New Orleans, he must confront memories of Hurricane Katrina and familiar discrimination. And Andra must decide if she’s brave enough to leave the shelter of the ranch for an uncertain future with LJ.

How much did we miss, love, by not being together?'In the early 1960s, Maureen Griffiths, married with children, accompanies a friend to a modelling shoot, never intending to be in front of the camera herself. But after meeting photographer Martin Morris, Maureen is transformed - and Martin quickly falls for her. It is forty years later. Shortly after Maureen's death, Martin moves into Pilgrim House, a retirement home, in part because Maureen's husband, George, is also a resident there. Through the letters he continues to write to Maureen, Martin reveals a lifetime of tireless devotion to his one true love. He is also determined to figure out why she stayed with her difficult, demanding husband. So with the aid of some of the colourful residents of Pilgrim House, Martin delves into the secrets of Maureen's family and becomes increasingly entwined in the complicated life that Maureen built to shield herself.Told through letters, emails, and other missives, Getting The Picture is an irresistible, funny and deeply moving novel of family secrets, regrets, and abiding love, with all the author's sly wit and powers of observation on full displayThis novel is Dean Street Press's entry for the 2015 Man Booker Prize.Praise for Getting The Picture'Getting The Picture astutely probes the quotidian eeriness of that other planet that is old age and a life recollected. Marvelous.' William Gibson'The best novels seduce the reader, so allow the wonderful chorus of voices in Sarah Salway's Getting The Picture to do just that. Let them whisper secrets, plans and mysteries; of the past, of the present. Let their possible futures come into focus for a celebratory final picture. This novel is uplifting, sinister and beautiful.' Tiffany Murray'One of the smartest, wittiest writers of present times, and I recommend anything by her. Getting The Picture is just great. I couldn't get through a page without smiling or laughing aloud... there is one photography session where an old man and woman meet with a camera between them that is riveting; Salway adds layers to it in the retelling, so that the poignancy of the event overtakes the humor. I can't stop thinking about the state of mind of the 79 year old woman who lowers her shirt for the camera. All these old people still want to be seen, and to reveal themselves. Salway is a wonder at detail - small moments from all her books are permanently embedded in my mind. Don't know how she does it, but it's marvelous.' Alice Elliott Dark'Sarah Salway is an astonishingly smart writer. Her fiction is always beautifully structured, touching and clever. She manages the trick of creating characters you care about in stories you admire. I can't wait to see what she does next.' Neil Gaiman

Book excerpt: The Dream Hanger covers the lives of three young females who each come from very different backgrounds, yet life has ironically brought them to the same place. As each character struggles to pick up the pieces of life, God’s purpose and plan for them becomes all the more real. By trashing their plans, they begin to pick up their dreams and live again. Are you who you are because of what you are? Or are you what you are because of who you are? Is a piece that deals with the lives of two young men, each thoroughly a victim of their own society. Growing up in the city streets, they each become products of what they see. Through a few bad decisions and wrong turns, they each find the path that God has for them on a road to discovering the meaning of life, friendship, and forgiveness. Runaway Home is about the life of a young girl who has the misfortune of witnessing a terrible incident as a child. This incident spiritually scars her, and causes her to have a skewed outlook on life. As time wears on, it’s through the after math of this very incident that she will find ambition, life, and love, proving yet again that everything can be used for the glory of God. Even with all of her attempts to escape her pain, God brings her back to purpose.

Book excerpt: How much thinking have you done about gender? What does it feel like to be gay, trans or non-binary at school? How unbiased, safe and inclusive are our teachers, our schools and our systems, and what can we do about it? The time is ripe for a re-think, and the issues are pressing. Our pupils are grappling with challenges around gender and sexuality, and they need our well-informed support. Providing evidence, prompts and the space to explore the implications, restrictions and constructs of gender, this book is here to help every teacher reflect on issues around gender roles and expectations in their class. In this challenging and potent book, experts, academics and campaigners join forces to contribute important perspectives to complement Rycroft-Smith’s own accessible and often provocative explanations of many facets of gender and sexuality, including media, literature, toys, clothing, sexism, expectations, sexuality, gender roles, harassment and consent. Humour and anecdotes are thoughtfully intertwined with fascinating insights into biological and cultural perspectives and societal norms, highlighting why it’s so vital to teach pupils about gender issues, as well as modelling consent, good quality relationships and tolerance to children at all ages and stages of their school career. Providing clear, practical policy recommendations in an accessible and engaging way, The Equal Classroom is an essential read for any teacher or education professional who wants to ensure their school is a place where all pupils feel truly welcome and able to flourish, comfortable and safe in their emerging identities.

The text presents original research from several different perspectives, and provides a basis for dialogue between researchers working on diverse projects with the aim of furthering our understanding of how languages are acquired. The book proposes and refines new theoretical constructs, e.g. regarding the complexity of linguistic features as a relevant factor forming children’s, adults’ and bilingual individuals’ acquisition of morphological, syntactic, discursive, pragmatic, lexical and phonological structures. It appeals to students, researchers, and professionals in the field.

Hamilton Helios, cactus juice addict, PTSD survivor and scavenger doesn't know, but everyone else on Mars seems to think he does. Why are Earth's central government, the break-away barons of the Oort Cloud, the native Martians, and more than a few sadistic criminals willing to kill for a nondescript sphere of red lacquer? Helios wishes he knew. Whatever the reason, secret agents, psychopathic religious fanatics, law enforcement officials, and wild Martians are all on his tail. To make matters worse, his business partner has been murdered, and Helios himself is under suspicion. Will Hamilton Helios learn the secret of the Blood Red Sphere before it plunges all of Mars, if not the whole solar system, into war? Or will he, like so many others before him, die for that secret?
